A WWYD for the SN moms
Yesterday we were at the new playground at Eisenhower Park. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it was designed so that children with special needs would be able to play alongside typical kids - they have adaptable equipment, lots of things for sensory seekers, etc. If you haven't been there yet, check it out, it's beautiful.
Anyway, yesterday....the park was very crowded, probably because it was Father's Day. We parked over where they were having the carnival/fair and then walked over to the playground afterwards. As we approached, there was music that kept getting louder and louder. As we get to the entrance we see a group of people set up for a picnic right across from the entrance with a huge sound system set up and a DJ. My DS has some noise sensitivities, and was covering his ears the entire time we were there. I know there are other things/situations where DS will do this, since I think he also covers up when he is anxious or scared but I was really annoyed. This area was created specifically as a place for SN children and kids with sensitivites to noise are not unusual in this population. I was telling my DH that I was going to write a letter to complain, that if people are going to have picnics right next to this area, they just shouldn't be allowed to have music so loud. He thinks it's probably a waste of time to write the letter.
What do you think? Just looking for opinions and whether or not you think I am over-reacting.

Re: A WWYD for the SN moms
I would definitely write a letter. The whole purpose of that park was to help SN children and to allow them to play comfortably. I think if you do a search on the park, you can find the organization that sponsored the park and send the letter to them as well. I'm sure the group that was playing the music probably had no idea about sound sensitivity issues of some of the kids that might visit the site, but the park should have set up a quiet zone or not allow party permits next to the park.

I'd write a letter too. My DD also has sensory issues with loud noises and I'd be furious if we went there, to a park designed for special needs and that was happening.

Definately write a letter. The park Commissioner is Carnell Foskey, Eisnehower Park Administration, 1899 Hempstead Tpke. East Meadow, NY 11554.

I would absolutely write that letter!
As another poster mentioned, I think the general population is just unaware of stuff with other kids.

Yes, write that letter.
I had no idea they had a sensory area there. Good to know!
