Need help with DS' behavior
Not sure where to post this, but I thought some of you might be able to help. I have noticed behavior in DS that I don't feel is typical three year old behavior. He gets extremely obsessed with things, beyond what a normal three year old gets obsessed with. He always has to have things a certain way - like right now, he is drinking a smoothie and he had to have a blue straw because he is wearing a blue shirt. He won't drink it if it doesn't match it and he freaks out if it doesn't match. If he is excited over something, it's all he thinks about. He might wake up from a sound sleep for a minute and say that one thing he's excited about. He also repeats sentences in different ways over and over. We went away with five families last week and many people jokingly said things about his obsessions. Many of the things he does is normal behavior for a three year old, but I Just feel that his behavior is slightly off... I just feel bad because he thinks things and he can't let it go... Like today, I was in tears because I had out baby Halloween costumes and he tried for an hour and a half to put on a size 6 month costume... He couldn't get it through his head that it didn't fit him. (lol To his credit, the pants, looked like shorts on him, so it looked like they fit him lol) Any thoughts?

Re: Need help with DS' behavior
The repetition of sentences and obsessive behaviors could be red flags, but its so hard to tell without knowing more. I would suggest you just make an appointment with a developmental pediatrician (not just with your own pediatrician as they often aren't that knowledgeable of spectrum disorders) and you'll get more answers...
I have a friend with a son who was obsessed with colors and things matching from the time he was very little...he is now 7. He is still VERY rigid and particular about things, but he is more OCD than anything else. He is typical in that he is very appropriately social, doesn't really have any stims etc...but he is definitely without a doubt OCD and its interesting to have seen those traits there since he was about a year old!
I have another friend who has not had a formal diagnosis for her child, but he is definitely on the spectrum. Only the school district has done a small evaluation and he qualified for 5 days/week of services. he does the sentence repetition thing but doesn't have much spontaneous speech. He will only talk about Thomas the train. He thinks they are all real people (his trains) and drags them everywhere.
I hope you get more answers!! It's great that he has tons of typical behaviors, I wouldn't worry too much but definitely see someone for peace of mind
