Kindergarten. What am I in for?

As far as homework ... And events at school? And overall - what can I expect?

In prek I felt there were sooo many activities during the day that I had to miss. Will K be the same?

Any tips?

Re: Kindergarten. What am I in for?

For HW - DD got a packet a week - went home on Monday, due back Friday.

She also had a library journal - went home on Tuesday, due back Monday

Class parties averaged about once a month I would say. Some I could make, some I couldn't. My mom went to some, DH went to some, it works out. The only one I stressed about making was the Mother's Day Tea.

Weekly:
Sight words
Sentences - started at 3 and worked up to 6
At the beginning of the year - tracing letters, cutting shapes, what comes first.
By mid year the kids would receive books to be read and handed back the next day.
Projects: Looking ahead/looking back
Time Capsule

Monthly:
Book report
Once:
All about me poster and project
Diorama

In class activities for parents:
Mother's Day Tea
Father's Day Event
Bug Show (the kids had an in class play where they dressed up as bugs, had to memorize two poems, and make a diorama)

There was one field trip to a play.

Monthly you could come in to the school to have lunch with your child.

The kids had special events but parents were in general not invited to them.

Homework was seriously a breeze this past year in K. We had a packet and one page was to be done each day, which took five minutes, if that. Read for 15 minutes and write the title of the book. New sight word added to their sight word bank each week. Practice those. That was really the extent of the work that came home for the entire year.

Class parties/celebrations, they had one for each major holiday. Nothing for Mother's Day surprisingly. Always during the day. Sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening. Our school also had family fun nights, once per month on a Friday. So that is nice for the working parents that can't come during the year.

Many volunteer opportunities for different school functions (book fair, holiday boutique, special events, etc.).

My son started the year with one math sheet and one spelling sheet. By Christmas break they had to do both sides of the math sheet and the spelling/writing one. Also in the beginning of the year every other day they had to do a page in their alphabet dictionary.

It honestly depends on the teacher. My DS and DD had the same teacher and she gave a ton of homework. A lot of writing!!!! She also was known as the teacher who "celebrated everything," and we were in the classroom at least a few times a month for different celebrations.
