Chores for 12 yo?

We are trying to work on getting my SD to do chores around the house.

Right now all she basically does is clear her own dishes, although she does help entertain DS (who is 3) on occasion.

Any thoughts or suggestions? What do your DC near that age do? We are thinking empty the dishwasher, maybe take out the garbage, etc. We're not yet comfortable having her babysit DS.

TIA!

Re: Chores for 12 yo?

My 8 and 9 year olds do the following...

Take out the garbage and recycling
Clean their rooms and the den (which is their playroom)
Make their beds (not well lol)
Clear their places at the table
Feed the dog (we all do this, depending on who is closest to his bowl when he demands service)

Less frequently...
Dust the living room
Swiffer wood floors
Vacuum their rooms and the den

A 12 year old is definitely capable of all this!

My sons are dying to mow the lawn!! We have an old, unreliable, temperamental lawn mower so my husband prefers todo it himself. We promised them the job is theirs when we get a new one. Chat Icon

Re: Chores for 12 yo?

My almost 5 year old sets(I put the plates/cups on the counter) and clears the table, unloads the silverware from the dishwasher (I take out knives before he does this), cleans his room, makes his bed, and will use the Swiffer vacuum after dinner (I usually have to do it after he does though). He also folds the socks when I do the laundry and is beginning to fold towels too. These are all his jobs and we set them aside for him.
My parents were both working parents and were big on chores. By 12 years old, I did mostly everything in the house, minus cooking big meals. For example, I wanted a phone in my room, so I had to do the entire houses laundry to earn that. Here is a list of life skills by age that I found on pinterest. You can get a list of chores from there!

Lawn mowing is a big deal to him. Next year he as our next door neighbor lined up as a client.

Chores for 12 yo?

My Stepson at that age:
-Feed the dog
-Clean up after the dog
-Take out the trash
-clear the table

He comes every other weekend so his chores are limited.

at 12 I had the following chores:
-clean bathroom every other weekend (rotate with my cousin)
-Clean kitchen every other day(mop and wash dishes)
-Vacuum & clean certain rooms (living room, bathrooms etc)
-cook rice some days to help my aunt. (she taught my cousin and I how to cook rice with gandules and we would cook it form time to time to help her get dinner moving along)

Re: Chores for 12 yo?

Thanks all!

Follow up - do you do an allowance, too, that is tied to the chores? If so would you share how much?

Re: Chores for 12 yo?

My DD is 6 (almost 7) and she gets $7/week ($1). Each day, she has the chance to "keep" her $1 if she does her chores/listens, etc. If she is acting out or not getting her stuff done I will give her a warning that she is about to lose her $1 for the day. If she continues, I take away the $1 (we have a list on the fridge). However...even if she loses her $1 for the day, she still has to complete the chores

She clears the dishes off the table after dinner.
She wipes off the table with 409 and pushes all the chairs in when we are done.
Feeds the dog
Empties the dishwasher (sometimes)
Cleans her room/playroom
Feeds the dog
Puts away her laundry
Makes her bed
Eats her dinner Chat Icon

Re: Chores for 12 yo?

No allowance. All members of our family help out because they live here!

We will give them money on demand (reasonably speaking) as long as they are family members in good standing. Chat Icon

DS gets $5.00/wk, when he started mowing the lawn ( with my assistance) we gave him an extra $3.00 each time he mows.
He plans to charge our neighbor $10 Next year but he is still going to give us the family discount. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
