Organic produce Whole Foods v Stop n Shop

We buy almost all of our fruits, veggies, dairy and meat organic (not into a debate, it's what I do) but we live about 30 minutes from Whole Foods and every now and then I have to get some things from Stop n Shop. I've noticed that the stuff I get from Stop n Shop goes bad really fast, faster than we can eat it sometimes. I don't have this problem with the produce I get from Whole Foods. A bag of potatoes we bought on Friday is sprouting "eyes" (or whatever you call those things) already and two peppers are almost shot. Did anyone else notice this or am I too obsessed with my veggies? Chat Icon

Edit: I mean organic at WF and organic at SnS

This is so true. I dont buy ALL organic but I try to do at least apples and potatoes and if I dont use the potatoes within 2 days I have to toss them. It is very frustrating and so I dont even bother buying them organic sometimes because its a waste. I only live near stop and shop so havent tried whole foods.

It happens to me, too. My husband swears it's because fertilizers and pesticides preserve the conventional foods longer. It's also why I guess Europeans shop for their produce daily. I just batch cook and freeze before it goes bad, so I'm not throwing away money.
I'm so mad at the cost of organic strawberries tho...

It's true, the conventional stuff stays longer because of the stuff they put on them. What I'm saying is that the organic stuff varies so much from store to store.

I've noticed it, too. I'm assuming it's because the turnover at Whole Foods is faster than S&S.

I find that Stop and Shop's produce in general is AWFUL. Not just organic but all of it.
At least the one I go to.
Horrible.

I shop at stop and shop and notice that the produce is hit or miss - both organic and non. It varies so much from week to week.

I've noticed the same thing too. I live right up the block from stop and shop and 20 minutes from fairway and trader joes. I go to trader joes and fairway once a month and stock up and do all my in between shopping at stop and shop. I notice the same thing with potatoes and my cucumbers also always go bad really fast compared to the organic ones at fairway. I also don't like that they don't carry a lot of the organic stuff that we eat, that's why we go to fairway and trader joes. My boys have a milk and egg allergy so we get them lots of coconut and almond based products and there isn't a lot to choose from at Stop and Shop. At fairway, I get them Ian's organic chicken strips and the Applegate organic bacon. Stop and Shop carries these brands but the natural version, not the organic version. They also don't carry the organic Applegate cold cuts at stop and shop, only the natural Applegate ones. I like that whole section at Fairway of the fruits and veggies that are organic. There is so much to choose from. I just wish they weren't so expensive, that's why we do a trader joes run first because they are cheaper but they have less of an organic selection. I feel like I run all over the place for what I need, I just wish it was all in one store and close to my home lol.

Eta. We also use Fairway for their personal products... Dr. Bronner's soap, bpa free toothbrushes, safe toothpaste without SLS, Garden of Life vitamins, deodorant, etc. I wish my local stop and shop or even target carried this stuff. Target carries Dr. Bronners but it's twice as much money as fairway...go figure because everything else at fairway is twice as much as target lol.

This.

I have a new Shop Rite close to me, and their produce is a million times better. Also, they have a huge organic selection.

I have yet to find a supermarket where I can buy produce that lasts beyond 4-5 days. Organic or otherwise....

To keep berries longer, dip them in a water vinegar bath and let them dry on a paper towel. They last a lot longer. I also make sure to take all produce out of the bags and just put them in my produce drawer.

. Buy organic berries frozen, they are flash frozen so retain all their nutrients. This is so much cheaper and just as tasty.

Re: Organic produce Whole Foods v Stop n Shop

Keep potatoes cool (but not refrigerated) and in a dark place.
Helps keep them from sprouting and turning greenish.

eta : I go to Fairway for most of my produce, but even that has not been the greatest lately. The closest supermarkets to where I am are Waldbaums (so-so) and Key Food (horrible produce)
I don't do organic, to me it is not worth the extra cost and it is not always better. All depends upon how the crops are fertilized.
