BTDT: Contractions & Labor

For the BTDT folks…how soon before you actually went into labor did you start feeling any kind of contractions? Not regular ones that come in intervals, but ones that are a bit more random.

I've been feeling anywhere from 3-5 contractions per day since my internal exam last week (last night was 3 back to back and super painful, stomach tightening, back pain, pelvic pain, the works). Just wondering if this is normal and can just last a few weeks or if it's usually a sign that real labor/full on contractions are around the corner.

If it makes any difference, I was 50% effaced as of Friday.

With dc#1 I had contractions on and off for a few weeks before. I delivered at 39 weeks exactly.

dc#2 I really didn't have contractions before the start of labor. I delivered at 38 weeks 2 3 days.

DS#1 I was experiencing contractions every 10-15 minutes on and off for about a week prior. I was 37weeks and 2cm +2. At 37w 2 days I was having regular 5-10 minute contractions; 37w3 days I lost my mucous plug around 10am and contractions increased to 2-5 minutes! Had DS 8 hours later

BTDT: Contractions & Labor

I had contraction on and off from 28 weeks- my contractions during labor started out the same but quickly became more painful and lasted much longer.

I was induced at 39 weeks but prior to that I was 1cm and 70% effaced for 2 weeks. I never felt any contractions until they put me on pitocin. Even while I was on cervidil, I was having contractions but they weren't painful or strong enough for me to really feel. The nurses kept asking me if I "felt that one" and I would be like, "ehhh kinda". Now the pitocin induced contractions are a whole different story! Chat Icon

Same here. I had what I thought was a stomach ache from eating too much around 9pm. Had consistent contractions at midnight. I'm pretty sure when they did my nst's between 40 and 42 weeks that I was always contracting but couldn't feel them.

Thanks all - sounds like random contractions are really no indication of anything. Good to know!

Re: BTDT: Contractions & Labor

The week prior to having DS, I had on and off contractions but nothing consistent. I didn't actually get set, timed ones until I was in labor. Sounds like it is close for you, A! Excited!!

BTDT: Contractions & Labor

Even when labor started, I didn't realize I was having real contractions, probably one reason I almost didn't make it to the hospital

I had the same situation as you beginning around 2 weeks before my DD I kept thinking I was going into labor, even went to doctor and had them hook me up to monitor, I was contracting but not labor contractions. What I can say is when the real labor started I KNEW there was no mistaking it, the pain and frequency increases significantly. GOOD LUCK!

Re: BTDT: Contractions & Labor

Random contractions is your body practicing is what my OB told me when I had my first. When they come at regular intervals and become increasingly painful and closer together, then it's probably the real deal. Most docs say to wait until they are five minutes apart and last one minute before going in.

Not to be confused with timeable braxton hicks. I've had those with all three of my kids but they don't get more painful, generally last about 30 seconds and they get further apart and go away.

I heard that the more contractions you have before actual labor, the shorter your labor will be. It was definitely true with my 3rd, I was contracting all the time for weeks prior and my labor start to finish was 3.25 hours. So there's that hope for you..

How much you are effaced/dilated is not an indicator of when you'll go in labor. I walked around for 3 days at 5cm dilated and 70% effaced and some women go from 0 to baby within hours.

That's good to know re: contractions before labor help shorten labor! Haven't heard that yet. That's awesome that your labor was only 3 hours.

I'll see how I've progressed during check tomorrow!
