We are in the process of redoing our kitchen and need to pick countertops. We have a few places in mind to check out but does anyone know what an average price per square foot would be?? I am totally clueless and just want to get an idea what we are looking at in terms of price.

It really is job and granite dependent. Price per square foot isn't really how most granite places price out jobs, they price out by cost of slab, edge liner feet, cut outs.
The more square feet you have, assuming you don't go just slightly over whole slab amounts, the cheaper

Mine was around $40 square foot, common granite over 80 square feet, deep ogee edge, but with a different granite it can add an additional 5-50 a square foot

I found independent shops to be cheaper than the big box stores, but be sure you know the workmanship of the one you are hiring, or get references - and check them. Don't go by price alone. I've made that mistake, and won't again.

I've done two kitchens and a couple of bathrooms and learned that the price depends on which granite you choose as some are more expensive than others. It also depends what kind of edge you want, a simple edge is cheaper than a fancier one as it's less work. The same sq footage of stone can vary widely depending on those details.

If you're in Nassau, I can recommend Elegante Granite in Westbury.
I was very happy with their work. I had them do our kitchen and the tub surround in our bathroom. Great work and the price was decent as well. Our salesperson was Neri (sp?) she was a trip, fun to work with and competent, that was about 4 years ago.

It really depends on the granite you choose, more unique colors are going to cost more because they are rarer. Most places we looked at ranged between $40/sq ft. to over a $100/sq ft. We paid about $58 sq. ft for ours and we paid a little extra to NOT have any seams. We also chose the EXACT slab that went into our kitchen.

I highly recommend going to smaller granite yards over a Home Depot or Lowe's. The prices are much better and you can usually see your slab and choose EXACTLY what you want, something you CAN'T do in a big box door. It's important to see the slab with a natural stone like granite because you might love something on a little sample but when you see that same granite over a huge surface area you might realize you don't like it at all.

We used Creative Stone and Granite in Selden, they did a really nice installation job and the prices were very reasonable.
