Baby #1 Pediatrician

I found the pediatrician's office that I would like to use -- didn't interview them or anything -- just went through word of mouth from several friends/family members. I'm due at the end of April and know they have privileges at the hospital I'm delivering at. How does this work? Do I call them now and tell them that I'd like to use them? I'm assuming I'll have to fill out preliminary paperwork/give insurance info. I know there's also a chance that they might not come to do the discharge check, but instead an in-house doctor will. Any info on his this works?

The hospital has on call pediatrician that rotate at the hospital. Your baby will be seen every day and on day of discharge. Tell them your pediatrician is so and so. They send the info to them. Then you have a follow up appointment at the pediatricians office a week from when they were born and so on.

Edit. Dd was seen by two diff drs over three days. Both were part of our practice and one was even dds pedi. Just worked out that way. Just make sure the practice you want to use is accepting new patients.

I had called the one I wanted to use before I delivered and all they said was that the hospital would call them once the baby was born and he'd come see her on his rounds.

That was it. I didn't need to do anything else.

The day I was in labor they asked who the ped would be. I told them and they alerted his office.

He came by the next day to see her.

When you fill out the forms to register at the hospital, they will ask who your pediatrician is. If they are affiliated with the hospital, they will do the rounds to check your newborn each day. When you're discharged, the hospital will send the records to the pediatrician.

You fill out the paperwork with your pediatrician at the first appointment.

I called the Pediatrician's office I wanted. They invited me to do a consult but suggested I make sure Insurance covers it first. They don't and the office came so highly recommended both on here and by my parent's friends who are doctors, that I feel comfortable just going with them.

The nurse told me that they were taking on patients and to just put them down on the paperwork at the hospital that they are my pediatricians. Don't have to do anything before hand.

She said the hospital will notify them of the birth and that their doctors would be the ones to check her out in the hospital.

Thanks, everyone! I called the pediatrician's office today and they said the same thing. Just list them on the hospital intake paperwork as the baby's doctors and the hospital would alert them of the birth and the rotating doctor would swing by to check the baby out likely the following morning after the birth.
