Switching to new doc and need help deciding between North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop

My apologies this is so long!

I had my first DC at Winthrop. My OB was Hanauer/Dolisi and I wasn't that happy with them throughout my pregnancy. In fact, I almost switched midway through but decided to stick it out.

Now that I'm pregnant with DC #2, I'm definitely switching. (Though I must be a glutton for punishment because I actually called Dolisi/Hanauer to make an appt. this go around, but after three days still wasn't successful in getting someone on the line that could make my appt. so that sealed the deal -- I'm done!)

Anyway, I've narrowed down my research to two great doctors. One affiliated with Winthrop and one at North Shore Manhasset.

To be honest, Winthrop is more convenient for me and for our family. But I didn't have a great experience there the first time around AT ALL. I know it's a great hospital to be in especially if the baby needs to be in the NICU, but I was so unhappy there the first time, I'm really hesitant to go back. The doctor that I'd be seeing affiliated with Winthrop is also more conveniently located though.

BUT I have to admit, I'm wooed by the amenities at North Shore. I've also found a great doc affiliated with them, it's just his location, nor the location of the hospital is as convenient for me. Not that big of a deal though, it's not far, just not not as close.

Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has given birth at Winthrop in the last couple of months and can share their experience. Did you have a roommate? Did the nurses help AT ALL? Did you have to wait hours after you were discharged to get a wheelchair out of the building?

I'm stressing about this decision and since nobody knows we're expecting, I can't bounce this off anyone but my husband (and he's all "do what you think is best" -- not that much help!)

Switching to new doc and need help deciding between North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop

i had my son at Winthrop in 2009 and i wasnt thrilled with them. the nurses were great and i know the NICU is top notch but my main issue was the rooms.

my doctor switched to north shore manhasset and im giddy to get my own room and rest! my friend's quads were born at 32 weeks and 4 years later they're doing great...the NICU there is awesome. my sister had my nephew there 5 months ago and they did a great job and the nurses were amazing as well.

Would you consider LIJ in New Hyde Park? The amenities there are very similar to North Shore Manhasset and the Katz's Women's Center was just redone. My SIL didn't have a great experience at Winthrop, but that was about a year ago at this point. It was her 2nd c-section and she was very uncomfortable and in pain recovering. She felt pressured to breastfeed and keep the baby in the room with her, even though she had already made up her mind to formula feed and wanted the baby in the nursery during the night so that she could rest and get some sleep. I wasn't impressed when I went and visited her -- her room was dirty for what I think should be the cleanliness level of a hospital. Bathroom sink had hair in the drain, dust bunnies in the corner, and her bed sheets had a stain/discoloration on them. At that time, my OBGYN was affiliated with Winthrop and I switched to a friend's practice affiliated with LIJ. I will say that I know lots of people who have had great experience at Winthrop, but that wasn't my (or my SIL's) experience.

No personal experience with Winthrops maternity, but 2 friends have delivered there in the last 6mths and both had not so great experiences. The L&D nurses were great they said but their rooms and their aftercare were nothing to rave about. Again that's just what I got from other ppl, lots of girls on here have positive experiences

As for north shore, I highly recommend that hospital. I gave birth there in 2010 and 2011 and will be again next month. Nothing but rave reviews from L&D to maternity, everyone was so attentive and caring.

Switching to new doc and need help deciding between North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop

I delivered both my DC at NSUH Manhasset and loved it both times. I shared a room when I gave birth to DS 4.5 years ago. They were in the last stages of opening their new wing.

I gave birth to DD there a 1 year ago and it was great. The room is nice and clean and big. The nurses were great (I has an issue with one very pushy nurse who was trying to get me to leave on day 3 after I had a C-section - once I made it clear I was staying the full time my insurance company would allow, she finally shut her mouth).

I know a few people who delivered at Winthrop within the last year and a half and they all said it was ok. One friend had a bad C-section and was put off by the nurses trying to get her to keep the baby in the room the first night.

She wanted to just get one night of sleep after being in labor for 15 hours followed by an emergency C-section. She said they made her feel like a bad mother for wanting to get a few hours sleep at 1:00 am. Making comments about her not bonding with the baby if she didn't breastfeed and that she better get use to not sleeping.

For me I need to be rested in order to function. I had a C-section with DD and sent her to the nursery every night so I could at least get 6 hours of sleep. For some people, that isn't for them but I'm glad at NS Manhasset they don't say boo if you choose to do it that way.

I've had 2 babies at Winthrop, one in 2008 and one in 2011. I know that isn't too recently, but I had positive experiences both times. My sister in law had both of her sons at NS-Manhasset. Yes, she had the private room with a huge bathroom, but I didn't really see much of a difference otherwise. I paid to have a private room at winthrop both times because even though they try to keep you private, they have no control over it if they are crowded.

I would go to North Shore if you like a Dr there. I felt similarly for #2 but ended up staying with my Dr at Winthrop.
Did not have a roommate but came close. There were very few rooms not doubled. The daytime nurse was friendly and asked if I needed anything. The nurse that came on in the evening, I barely saw. I was discharged without a wheelchair. Maybe I was supposed to wait for one? I pushed DD1's stroller out. Said goodbye to the nurse and assistants. No one told me to wait.
One thing I really didn't like at Winthrop last time were the residents in L&D.

Hands down North Shore because of their NICU. Also doesn't hurt that the rooms are private!

Switching to new doc and need help deciding between North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop

There was a HUGE difference between what I experienced at LIJ NHP and what my BFF experienced at Winthrop... Night and Day, and hands down,, I would go LIJ any day of the week. LIJ NHP has the best NICU around. The LC's there were amazing and so helpful. The nurses, fantastic.

Someone just told me Winthrop was a dump now. (I was going to switch drs to one who delivered there but ended up staying with my current who delivers at south side LIJ)

I'd trust your gut. Sounds like your leaning towards a switch. A little travel inconvenience is worth it IMO if you are happy with the practice and hospital.

I had my surgery at North Shore and spent my recovery in the women's center where you would be for maternity. I live on the mid south shore, and I briefly considered finding an OB up there because it was SO nice.

Glad I didn't given this brutal winter, but I'm going to miss that room.

Re: Switching to new doc and need help deciding between North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop

I guess I am the minority here but I would stick with Winthrop. I was considering switching to Lij group because hospital was nicer but for two days I am there I don't think it is worth it. My son was born two years ago at Winthrop and my experience was fine. L&d was fantastic. The maternity ward needs updating isn't a hotel but it served it's purpose. I left after 48hrs. I live in mineola and hospital is about one mile away. So with a two year old and limited family I decided the connivence was worth more. especially because doctor is also much closer and I usually bring my son to appointments. For the two days I am in hospital I will deal with it.

I delivered at winthrop with my first and I considered switching to either NS or LIJ, especially because the rooms are supposed to be a lot nicer, but in the end I really like my doctor and decided not to switch. At least i know they have a good NICU in case the baby needs to go there.

If they do not have any private rooms available because of crowding they can't offer them. That isn't really the hospital's fault.

I don't understand why you would feel pressured to send your baby to the nursery just because your roommate did. You do what is best for you.

The issues that you mentioned could have occurred at any hospital, not just winthrop.

My good friend works at the new Katz women's center at LIJ, it is beautiful. But, they still experience overcrowding and have to put people in small rooms sometimes.

I'm a little confused. I never said this couldnt happen elsewhere, or that it was Winthrops fault for being crowded. The poster asked about my experience and what happened the day I gave birth, and this is exactly what happened. I saw that you said you paid for the private. I just wanted to put it out there that it always is not possible to go in and pay.

As for feeling pressured -- i just did. The woman who shared a room with me was in labor for almost 48 hours and was hysterical and exhausted. My baby was a screamer and I know wouldnt have been quiet for her to get rest. I put the pressure on myself to put him in bc I felt she would be a mess if i didnt. The room was super tiny and we were literally on top of each other. If i was in a private room that wouldnt have been an issue I would have had to deal with -- or a decision i would have had to make.
But again, i wasnt blaming that on Winthrop, just on the fact that I had to share, which wouldnt be an issue at the other hospital.
All this being said, I am NOT changing doctors and if i do get pregnant again, I will be delivering at Winthrop. Im willing to take my chances to keep my doc.

Yes, I paid for a private room because there was one available. Had there not been, no amount of money would have gotten me one. I completely understand that. They only had a certain # of private rooms that you could pay for.
