Metformin Question

One of my friends was diagnosed with PCOS and a blood clotting issue. One of many things prescribed to her was metformin. First cycle on metformin the pharmacy gave her 850mg pills and she took them twice daily. She had a 28 day cycle and she ovulated around day 14 as confirmed by blood work ordered by her doctor. However, she did not get pregnant.

Next cycle she went to refill the metformin and the pharmacy said whoops, we misread your doctor's prescription, it was never supposed to be 850 mg twice daily, it was supposed to be 750 mg twice daily. So they gave her 750mg pills, which reduced her overall daily dose from 1700mg to 1500mg. Second cycle was 50 days long and she may never have ovulated - unsure because she was traveling and unable to get the blood work.

This cycle she tried to track ovulation with the at-home OPKs - she seems to be at cycle day 27 and never got a positive OPK. No period yet and preg tests are negative.

Obviously she needs to speak to her doctor. In the interim, though, I am wondering if the decrease in the metformin could have sent her body back into anovulation? If not that, maybe 1500mg is just not enough and the dose needs to be increased? Anyone with knowledge or who can speak from experience would be most appreciated.

Re: Metformin Question

That doesn't seem like a big enough difference to me that it would make that much of a difference.

That said, I'd be raising hell with the pharmacy. That can be a VERY serious mistake!!!!! That's a very big deal and I'd change pharmacies immediately! (After raising hell...)

Re: Metformin Question

I am on 1500 mg and was told that's the typical dose for PCOS. I too, have been having long cycles but I think it's just the PCOS, the dr said it takes 3-4 months to really see a benefit from the metformin.
