How do you keep IVF a secret at work?

Does anyone find it difficult to get to work everyday without being late or without taking sick time? I am opposed to telling anyone at work about my struggle. It's too personal for me.

I haven't started IVF yet. I am currently at Cornell. I work in Manhattan and start at 8:30.

I believe that Cornell does monitoring from 7-9 on weekdays and it's first come first serve. Correct me if I'm wrong. So when I do IVF I'm hoping that when I have to go in for monitoring, I can get there at 7 and leave by 8. But I'm not sure how ambitious that is.

And I already told myself that if IVF #1 doesn't work, I "may" switch to SIRM. I heard their monitoring hours can be at any time in the day as they are by appointment. How does anyone manage that?

I actually had it where I would show up late to work by maybe 5-15 minutes. I finally couldn't deal with the pressure and told my boss... She was totally ok with it and knew I would have everything covered. It was a relief for me. If you want to keep it out of the way I would get there early like the OP said. It means earlier wake up for you but it is totally worth it! Hugs!

How do you keep IVF a secret at work?

I just started at LI IVF and their hrs start at 630. So far I have been there 2x and the first time I caught the next train from my normal one and the 2nd time I caught my normal train.

When I started for my first DC I was going to Columbia in the city and I would take an earlier train and go there for my monitoring and then sometimes I would be slightly late. This time I told my boss I am going through some medical issues and that I was going to maybe be late here and there but I would do my best to not let it impact my work.

Honestly you really don't have to tell work. I did a fresh IVF and FET round and no one at work was the wiser.

Make sure you are one of the first for morning monitoring and you should be good. The only thing is that you will need to take off for your retrieval and transfer. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I will definitely try to be the first one there. I can definitely be at Cornell before 7. And if I'm 5-10 minutes late at work, it's not a big deal.

I know I have to take off during the retrieval and transfer. I'm not worried about that. I was just worried about the daily monitoring.

I had to tell.
Monitoring could be iffy & my start was no later than 7.
Retrieval & transfer were last minute days off.

When I was at RMA I would get in at 6:40AM and be out ther door by 7:20 and at my desk downtown by 7:50 - no one knew I was doing IVF at that time. Then I switched to SIRM and came clean to my supervisor bc it just made scheduling easier/less stressful considering there are no "set times" until the day before. I would always ask for a lunch time appt and would just take an extended lunch. Downtown to Midtown back downtown used to take me 1.5 hrs door to door.

Without being late or sick day?! Lol I wish that existed. When I first started doing IVF I was late everyday not by much but every monitoring appointment I was late. At the time I used NSUH Manhasset and worked at Winthrop. I eventually switched to RS of NY which is right down the block from work so I would just make it there on time.

My embryos were transferred early this year back to NSUH but after this baby we are done so they are just being stored there.

Oh by the way I did not inform anyone at work that I was doing IVF so if I was running late I would blame my DD bus being late or traffic.

My boss was amazing... i told him the truth because i knew i could trust him and i didnt want him to feel like i was taking advantage of his kindness for other reasons. Dr Bs office was relatively close to mine, within walking distance so i would make my appointments for late afternoon so i could just leave an hr early.

I told my boss about it. I should have just said it was a personal medical issue but she was cool with everything. I come in late once in a while but other days come in early to make up the time.

I have to be at work by 8:30. I was able to get to monitoring about 7, was always out by 7:30 at the latest and was able to get to work on time. The day of the retrievals and transfers, I just took sick days.

Lol! People at my work who I didn't tell figured it out!
Take it in stride: work knowing is not the worst thing & may make it easier.

The only way I could have kept it a real secret was saying I had some sort of medical issue, I'm a teacher so even getting to work 5 minutes late doesn't really work without people noticing.
Turns out the best thing I even did was tell my boss and a few other who can cover me for a few minutes when needed. They have been amazing and supportive and took at least one stress away from this whole ordeal.

Re: How do you keep IVF a secret at work?

I was upfront and honest with my boss. She was so good about everything! I felt more relaxed giving her the heads up in case I was late. I went to LI IVF and would try and get there for 6:30 when they first opened so I was in and out. Made It a lot easier since I commute to the city.

I was quiet about it for awhile but with teaching, you can't be late in a.m. so I told my principal and secretaries- their daughters were actually going through it so they were very compassionate and understanding. Eventually other colleagues found out- constantly coming and going in the a.m.- with new dr its the p.m.- however I found out 2 other colleagues of mine are also going through it- so we bonded and shared our stories. I don't regret it. Although its no ones business, I feel if i could help someone else that is silently suffering, then I'm happy. No one should have to suffer this in silence. TOo many of us do.

Another teacher here so I had to tell certain people in my building. I teach high school and the year I was going through IUI's and IVF, I taught a first period class. One of my best friends in the same department was free first, so if I was ever running late, I'd text her and she'd cover for me until I got there. On mornings I needed to go in for monitoring, I'd get there SUPER early to ensure that I'd be in and out as quickly as possible. While I was nervous to tell my superiors at work, it was such a huge stress relief when I did. Do what you feel is right for you!
