Ivf questions

So I have an almost 8 yr old son, and we've been trying to get pg for about 5 years now for baby#2 with no luck. I did two months of iui's about 2 yrs ago and no luck. My medical coverage doesn't cover ivf and we can't afford if. Well hubby got a new job and ivf is covered and goes into effect 8/1. ??Now I want to move forward to try!
Can anyone let me know what I have to do to prepare- current pap, cut anything out of diet, etc?
And can you also tell me what's usually involved with the whole fertility dr/ivf procedure, injections etc?? Do u do injections for a short time?
I really appreciate any info!
Tia??

Re: Ivf questions

They will probably start with a bunch of tests to see why you are having trouble.
As for IVF I think it was about 10-12 days of injections before the retrieval. It depends on how well your body responds to the injections. Good luck!

Re: Ivf questions

That's great news. Insurance coverage makes such a difference.
I would make sure you've had a pap and breast exam within the past year.
When you meet with the RE, they will take a history and probably recommend a bunch of tests including blood work for you and DH. They'll probably want DH to do a semen analysis and have you do an HSG to check your tubes. Be prepared that all the testing can take a month or two to complete.
In a quick nutshell, IVF often involves one cycle on birth control pills followed by 8-12 days of shots to stimulate egg production. During that time your RE will want to monitor you through blood work and sonograms, most do this in the morning.
Then, you will take a trigger shot and they will schedule your egg retrieval about 36 hours later. Your DH will also have to produce a sample the same day as your retrieval. Depending on how many eggs fertilize they may do a 3 or 5 day transfer.
Obviously, there are many more details that go into it but that's a brief overview! Hope it helped

That is great news. They will want to see you on Cycle Day 3 but definitely get your Pap smear done now and start the vitamins.

Re: Ivf questions

that is very helpful girls, thank you! I did 2 cycles of IUI's and was at the RE office pretty much every other day... I had a bunch of testing done before that and had to do the injections for a while.
This sounds very similar with regards to the testing..i wonder if I will have to do all of the tests over again since its been a while..

Depending on your insurance they may have you do 1 or more IUIs before proceeding to IVF unless your diagnosis warrants skipping the IUIs in which case your doctor would not to write a letter with rationale, which is fairly simple.
