Converting to gas?
We are in the process of buying a home and we are thinking about converting to gas. Anyone do this? Wondering what kind of cost we are looking at. We know that there is already a gas line on our street, if that makes any difference.

Converting to gas?
We did it about 4 years ago and the cost was about $6K, plus I think another $2K (?) for a new hot water heater (I could be way off on that - I just don't remember for sure)

Re: Converting to gas?
We just did it about 3 weeks ago. It was $8K (including new boiler and hot water heater, all permits, etc.). We are now waiting on our $1,000 rebate to come in the mail, so the actual net will be $7K
The gas line was already up to our house. National Grid just ran gas lines down our street last year and if you agreed to convert, we didn't have to pay to have the gas line brought up to the house.

Converting to gas?
Just wanted to add it can take about 8 weeks for the line to be brought into your house. Start researching plumbers now so once your in the house you can get the ball rolling.

Converting to gas?
National grid quoted us 75,000 to bring the line to our street. I almost died.

They did that to us too when we first bought our house. We obviously were not going to do it. Well 8 years later they decided to run a gas line down our street. We agreed to convert and they ran the gas line to the house for free. We just had to pay for everything IN our house.

Re: Converting to gas?
we used manzo plumbing and got a combination unit b/c we didn't have space for a hot water heater. it was more expensive bc of the unit we selected, but we're happy with the work and the savings

Converting to gas?
I used Universe. I already had gas in the house for cooking and hot water, just oil for heat. So I didn't need a new water heater, just a burner. So burner, removal of oil tank, added a zone in the basement and also added a pump for the washing machine...that was all $12k.

Re: Converting to gas?
We used Universe as well - already has gas in the house for hot water, cooking and dryer - just needed to convert our heating system. We paid around 8k - that included the removal of the old oil tank, new burner, and installation

Re: Converting to gas?
Are was i think about 4500 maybe a little more. But we already had gas running for hot water/cooking and dryer (not sure why the owners didn't convert to heat at the time) so we just really needed a new boiler. We also added a second zone at the same time.

Re: Converting to gas?
It really matters where the gas line is on your street. I mean, National Grid charges by the foot (I think the first 100 feet are free, or used to be). So if it's right in front of your house, then it's going to be much less expensive than if it's way up the block.
I would call National Grid (if you haven't already) to get this info.
The biggest expense is usually getting the gas line to your house, which is why people often approach their neighbors to see if they are interested in converting as well, to split the cost.
Of course, you will then need a gas heating system... cost will vary depending on how high end you go.

I actually had a terrible experience with Burner King. Had no hot water for a week and they sent a parade of incompetent plumbers to my house. I would never recco them to anyone.

We used sal manzo last year for our conversion. We had the gas line in the street already. Our cost was less than $8k I believe. I can update with exact number when I get home.
