Carpet vs tile/wood

I've always lived in places with carpet (parents house/apartment rules required carpet) so I got used to just lounging/lying on the floor a lot.

We're looking at a 2 story house.
1st floor - living room/dining room/kitchen (all tile)
2nd floor - 3 bedrooms (wood)

My wife wants to keep it the way it is, I want carpet since thats what Im used to. And I like sitting/lying on the floor.

I told her its easy to keep carpet clean - just run the vacuum once or twice a week (I do the vacuuming now)

With tile/wood (I assume) I need to use a broom or a Swiffer or a mop to clean?
It seems like it would take longer and be dirtier to do.

What are your thoughts?
Pros/Cons of carpet vs no carpet?

Re: Carpet vs tile/wood

I personally hate carpet...sure its nice when its newly installed, fresh and perfect...but overtime it is very hard to keep CLEAN. The only room I have carpet in is in my den, and because its on a cement slab, carpet was the cheapest option when we moved in. 6 years later it looks awful and I am a neat freak - but there are just some stains that wont come out and it just looks worn and shabby.

We are now converting the garage and will be changing over to wood floors - i cannot wait to be rid of the carpet.

I have wood floors throughout the rest of the house and they are just so easy to keep clean and i like that I can just switch out the area rugs when I feel that are at the end of their life...

I dont have tile now, but Ive had before in apartments. I also think its very easy to keep clean - the grout can get shabby here and there, but when you have the time to really clean it, its easy to clean.

I prefer wood. When we bought our house the main living area was hardwood and upstairs in the bedroom was carpet. We ripped up the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors. I feel like hardwood floors are easier to keep clean vs carpet. We do have carpet in our basement but it was the cheapest option at the time to cover the asbestos tile down there, but it already has a lot of dirt/stains from the kids and other traffic.

Another vote for hardwood or tile - I hate carpet! I'm in a temporary apt with carpet and hate it - feels dirty all the time, and I'm always paranoid about a liquid spilling/staining.

Carpet vs tile/wood

The first thing we did when we bought the house was rip out all the carpeting. YUCK! Hardwood is much easier to keep clean and so is tile.

Not a carpet fan because I think hardwood/tile is easier to keep clean.

My opnion is also skewed by the fact that we had 2 (now we only have one) that had accidents in the house so cleaning up on a hardwood/tile a lot easier. Same with kids spilling things on the floor.

When we moved in we lucked out with wood floors under our carpet downstairs so we kept it. DH wanted carpet in our bedroom but since the dog can go in there I veto the idea.

Upstairs was carpet (the kids rooms) and underneath was not wood floors so I agreed to keep it carpet and get new ones. He wanted it one cause he thinks it feels better to have carpet in a bedroom on your feet and 2 he said it would help drown out the noise. I still would have preferred wood floor again in case of spill. But my DC are not allowed to have any food or drinks expect maybe water in their room and if they are sick we let them sleep downstairs so I don't have to stress cleaning up the carpet if they don't make it to a bathroom Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: for the wood/floors DH does vacuum first or sweeps then uses a mop/swifter

Another vote for tile/wood. We do have an area rug in our living room.

My husband loves carpet like you. I'm convinced it is because he always had his mom to keep it clean growing up.

The problem with carpet is that vacuum doesn't actually get it clean. It's cleaner, but it still needs a deep clean. I think my mother in law shampoos her rugs at least twice a year. We haven't shampooed our rugs after a year of living in the house and you can tell that they are ready it for it, but it's such a process to shampoo them that we haven't gotten around to it. I'm hoping to do it before the baby starts crawling.

Our rooms with hardwood and tile are so easy to get really clean. I just vacuum, swiffer, and then mop. Yes, it's three steps, but they're relatively quick. Also, small spills or accidents are really easy to clean up. The carpet you have to try to get it all out of the padding, and then put stain/odor remover, and even then it might not take it all out.

Ditto. I hate carpet. We had carpeting growing up and my job as a teen was to shampoo the stairs. That took forever! I hated it.

Re: Carpet vs tile/wood

I definitely prefer carpet in "living areas". Living room and bedrooms. We have a corn-based Mohawk brand carpet that doesn't stain. We've had ours for 8 years, with two kids and two dogs (at separate times), and it still looks brand-new. We have a shampooer that we use once in a while to keep it clean.

It feels much better lying down on carpet vs cold hard wood.

We have wood (technically bamboo) in the office, dining room and kitchen, and tile in the bathrooms. The wood floors are still a pain to keep clean. Even with the bamboo floors which are incredibly tougher than any hardwood, it still shows scratches, which make it look like crap. I try to cover up the scratches as best as I can with matching wood stain, but they are still there.

tl;dr : I prefer both... Chat Icon

I have carpet in 2 rooms and wish I had put wood in them. Carpet is so dirty IMO. You can vacuum all you want but that does not clean it.

i hate carpet. I never feel like it's really clean and i get grossed out walking on other people's carpets because you never know was in the fibers of it. Wood floors look nicer and carpet is outdated IMO

We ripped out every carpet when we bought our house and put down bamboo everywhere, except tiles in the bathrooms. I hate carpet. And sure, you can just vacuum it...until you spill something, pet pees on it, kid throws up (or worse lol) on it, then you need to remove the stains. You also need to shampoo the carpet once in a while. Vacuuming picks up crumbs and hair but it doesn't "clean" it.

Re: Carpet vs tile/wood

Grew up with carpet.
Hate it.
Everything feels so much cleaner now and better for allergies.
I swiffer and steam mop.
We do have carpet in the basement because it's on a concrete slab and it gets cold. I hate the heat so I feel like the carpet keeps it a little warmer down there so I can turn the heat on less.

From a real estate standpoint, most people prefer hardwood in their living spaces.

I personally don't mind carpet in certain areas - in my house we have hardwood in the living room, dining room, and some of the bedrooms. We have carpet in the master bedroom, den, and finished basement. And tile in the kitchen, baths, and entryway.

I think carpet shows more wear and tear, especially in high traffic areas. I would be leery of a lot of carpet if you have pets or allergies.

My personal preference would be no tile in a living room area... I think it can feel a little cold. I would put area rugs in there as a compromise to "warm up the space" but you don't have to commit to wall-to-wall carpet (and you can get nice looking area rugs that are relatively inexpensive).

Re: Carpet vs tile/wood

For the bedrooms and the playroom a carpet is a must to me. I hate the cold feeling of tile and wood. Most people with wood end up getting big area rugs on top of the floor anyway.

I find it hard to keep the wood floors clean. I prefer the carpet

Another carpet hater here lol. Sorry, guy

Really I hate how carpet begins to smell after a while. We have a brand new Berber carpet in our den that's on the ground floor (on slab and cheaper to carpet than do hardwoods down there plus that room would be the coldest). The kids play there which in hindsight wasn't the smartest choice. I should've gotten a commercial carpet but anyway..... things have spilled, there's little pulls in some spots, and it's just yucky. I can't wait to rip it out one day.

The rest of our house is hardwoods and I love them
We have area rugs for the living room and family room

It's all personal preference. I personally don't like hardwood everywhere. I have carpets in the bedrooms and den, hardwood in the hallway and formal areas, and tile in my kitchen. I like the mix and I think carpets are SO much cozier in den and bedroom.

Same exact thing here. I don't like hardwood in dens and bedrooms. I don't think hardwood is comfy and cozy.
