Pumping- DOE

Does anyone know what the policies are for alotting time for breast pumping? One of my co-workers said we are supposed to have time that does not include our prep periods to pump. I'm in elementary, thanks!

never heard of that before... must be a new thing?

Found this on schools.nyc.gov:
"Nursing mothers are permitted to utilize non-instructional time or break period,
including lunch breaks, to express breast milk during regular work hours and during any per
session hours worked. Each break shall last approximately twenty minutes, plus time for the
employee to walk to and from the lactation room, although an employee can elect to take
shorter breaks. The employee’s principal or head of the office shall arrange an appropriate
schedule with the employee so as to minimize interference with her job duties and
responsibilities, provided that she shall be permitted to take break time for expression
purposes every three hours, if so requested. An employee may be required to postpone
scheduled break time for up to thirty minutes if she cannot be separated from her duties until
appropriate coverage arrives.
In the event that an employee utilizes paid break time to express breast milk, the
principal or head of the office may ask the employee to make up that time either before
or after her regularly scheduled work hours. This is to be determined on a case-by-case
basis."

Based on that, it sounds to me that you don't get additional time. You are to use your prep or lunch to pump for 20 mins, which would still technically leave time to eat lunch quick. All the teachers in my building pumped in their classrooms during lunch and ate while they pumped

I doubt you get time. I pumped in the car on the way to work, during lunch, and on the way home. Pumping at work and being a teacher is stressful. Good luck.

I used to pump on my prep and during my lunch. I never asked for time aside from that.

I did that too. To be honest, I had no problem allotting the time- the bigger challenge was making sure I had a private space. Lots of my co-workers somehow had master keys and I did have a close call with one co-worker who tried to come into my room during lunch to get something he'd left behind- even though I'd made sure everyone knew that my room needed to remain locked. If I didn't have my own classroom, as many teachers didn't, I don't know what I would have done.
