holiday baking question... one dough, many cookies
every once in a while i see how to make one master dough that then can be turned into many different types of cookies and/or freezing the dough ahead of time.
has anyone done this before? if so, which recipe/technique did you use?
i'm hoping to do some serious baking this year but would like to make it as easy as possible.

There is a book.... "1 Dough, 100 Cookies" by Linda Doeser. If you have a library card see if you can check it out. It is one master dough and they give you 100 twists on it. The basic cookie dough is butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, flour, salt. but for certain cookies you might add in some cocoa powder and chocolate chips, or some dried fruit and some nuts. some you just add jam. some you add frosting. but check it out if you are interested in that kind of thing.

This is my master dough--it's the Tollhouse cookie base--at Christmas I do all different mix-ins and even make cookie bars out of it: 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs
Preheat oven to 375°F. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in any add-ins. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

I tried this one years ago and I think they were pretty good from what I remember. It's shortbread cookies four ways. I remember being frustrated that it didn't end up making that many of each kind so it may be better to double or triple the recipe.
