Work WWYD

I work for a smaller company. There is no formal HR department, no formal policies and procedures and while there is an employee handbook, nobody actually knows what it says. It's a very lax environment.

Every year, on our anniversary, we are supposed to have a review and typically we get a raise at that time. However, the review doesn't happen automatically. It takes a few tries of hounding my boss for a sit down and then he finally will and agree to a raise. It's been like this for years. It's almost like a cat and mouse game but my bosses are otherwise great and it's a nice place to work. We all know the deal.

This year, when it was my anniversary, a couple of things happened that I decided was not the best time to approach and overwhelm them (dumb, I know) so I waited a little bit. On 3/6, I went in to talk to him but we were interrupted by a client having an issue. My boss was away on business the following week and then we closed 3/16. I haven't had the opportunity to see my boss since.

I know my company's number 1 priority right now is not having to lay anyone off and, so far, so good. A lot of our competitors have had to do so. Given the current climate, I didn't think the timing was appropriate to start about my raise again. But now one of our staff members is leaving for a new job so, in my mind, that frees up money.

I want to ask for my raise but is the timing off? Should I just wait it out until things normalize? Should I just ask for a bigger raise next year? IDK what to do. FWIW, my productivity has been just as good, if not better, working from home. I just don't want to come across as inconsiderate and entitled. WWYD?

I would hold off on asking for a raise and would maybe approach it as can we meet remotely for my review and discuss it there and see if it’s brought up

Re: Work WWYD

I'm sorry but I think the timing is terrible to ask for any kind of raise right now. There's just too much uncertainty right now for most small companies that I would wait until the storm passes and then approach.

Re: Work WWYD

My company has announced that all raises are on hold for now as their main focus is not having to lay anyone off or give any pay cuts like many other companies have.
At this point- I'd wait on the raise discussion for a least a few months.

Yeah, the timing is terrible. I'm going to have to wait. It's just not the time. Thanks!

I wouldn't ask - it's never good to ask in uncertain economic times.

I wouldn’t ask. As a PP said, my DH’s company has put all raises on hold until at least December.

Same here. Right now we are under a hiring and salary freeze.
