Social Media

Am I the only person who feels as tho social media is a major reason behind the downfall of society? Everyone is on their soap box screaming at the top of their lungs sharing false things with not an a ounce of truth behind them. Things spread like wildfire and people believe them. I even caught my 12 year old sharing things with her friends that weren’t true just because some famous “influencer” said to share it.

I wish we could go back to when social media was used to share happy things, not shove unintelligent opinions down people’s throats and divide friends and families.

Yes, 1000% agree! My almost 12 year has been doing the same thing. I keep telling him to stop and do some research. Or ask us. The stuff that has been coming out his mouth is crazy. I don't know how many times I have to tell him Tik Tok is not the Bible.

Basically, this is the generation we are raising.

Totally agree. I refuse to use FB or Twitter, haven’t in about 8 years now, and I truly believe my life is better without them lol. I have IG which I just use to look at nature photos and stuff like that.

I wish my kids were being raised during the late 80’s/90’s. Much simpler time.

And no one interacts with each other normally anymore. Grown adults have their heads in their phones the majority of the time.

People can't even eat dinner without staging a photo.

Yes - both Social Media and the abundance of media we can access.

It's crazy - I have been reading some articles, it's amazing how completely different they are depending on the source. I've even seen the same story in some local papers about Covid - like say they have 60 new cases each day in an area. One day it's horrible to have 60 cases and the next day it's only 60.

Re: Social Media

Luckily, I've raised my DC to start with "Assume everything on the Internet is a lie, until you verify it". It doesn't work 100%, but they do question almost everything they see on-line, and check multiple and/or verified sources, especially if it seems "off". DS is 17 and DD is 14.

I'm so borrowing that!

Yup, I agree!
It's so sad that people get their news from facebook and run with it. A meme is NOT the truth.

COMPLETELY agree. Social media makes the dumb even dumber, it's a cesspool of misinformation and bullsh1t. The worst thing though is that it showcases people's racism, hate and ignorance.

It's like this meme. What do you think people in the 1990's would think is going on if you showed them this photo.

Re: Social Media

I dont think social media itself is a problem, its how people are viewing social media in their personal lives and how they unwittingly create their own personal bubbles without realizing it. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram - all have their uses and I find I enjoy connecting with my distant friends and relatives through these platforms. I just make an effort to stay away from politics because the current political climate is just toxic (for both sides), and mass media has to generate interest by focusing on inflammatory events. I go to Pinterest a lot for ideas, Instagram for connecting with celebs, friends, and certain businesses/companies.

I like YouTube as I can listen to lectures, concerts and all types of events going on virtually right now because real time gatherings are cancelled worldwide. I think more people would benefit from increasing their worldviews and looking past their own bubble to connect with people of different views, backgrounds, age, etc. I was on a Zoom call a few days ago with 10 people from Europe, Asia etc discussing music. It was a welcome break from all the negativity circulating in media outlets.

TLDR- social media itself isnt evil, its how the user utilizes it.

And I just remembered this episode of Black Mirror:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosedive_(Black_Mirror)

She tried so hard to live her life for likes, but she had to or she couldn't get an Uber, rent a car, etc. I've seen news pieces that China is already implementing some of this with cameras everywhere.

I agree!

But I have 'family' members who post about biden and his island and submarine license and his connection to epstein, etc...and they eat it all up! And then they share it. It's blatant slander but it doesn't get stopped.

I firmly believe this is why hillary lost...people got their news from facebook memes and shares and that was it.

I remember seeing this episode. I can’t stand social media. I hope by the time my kids are of age to navigate the internet these platforms have died off

ITA about people sharing stuff that they don’t even look into.
The HRC part I am not even touching if you believe that is why she lost lol.

And that's why I love the quote from Abraham Lincoln, "Tis better to have the world believe you're a fool, than to post on Facebook and remove all doubt."

and since it was posted on "Accurate Historical Quotes" on Facebook, I know it's a direct quote. Chat Icon

Agree 100%. I feel so lucky to have grown up in the 80s/90s. Graduated in 99 and we had dial up internet and AIM. No facebook. Life was so much simpler
