When a person of Jewish faith dies...
What is an appropriate gift to send? Would prefer not to send prepared food.

I know you said no prepared food, but prepared food is definitely the norm. You don't have to do hot food- could send bagels, a dessert, fruit platter, etc. Agree with PP, no flowers.

Oh ok-they’re just very picky people as far as food goes so I know whatever I send will go directly in the trash. With that aside, can you recommend a mail-order place for food? The family is not local to NY.

Is there a charity that they are asking to donate in the deceased one's honor? If not you can always donate to a charity in their honor.
My usual go to is fruit and desserts from Delicious Orchards.

donate to a charity in the persons name
or
food (can be anything. so even if they are the pickiest eaters, pick something you know they like). It's usually served for guests and not actually eaten by them anyway to be completely honest.

Are they sitting shiva? If so, they shouldn't be at all surprised if they receive food. I don't know the COVID shiva rules though, so maybe they're not.
The donation is also a good idea and a safer bet if you really don't want to send food.

I would have trees planted in Israel in memory of their loved one. If you cannot do food (kosher bagels from Russ and Daughters or Zabarrs would be my go to place for bagels) a donation for trees or even to PJ Library would be another good choice. When you write the card include the line may their memory be a blessing. It is what is traditionally said. trees

we plant trees, if they are picky eaters I would not send food.
If the person was a male and belonged to a temple did they belong to mens' club or sisterhood or haddassah (if female), if yes you can buy plants thru the temple, they would also receive a donation or give a donation to the men's club or sisterhood
you can buy a prayer book in their name thru the temple too,
