wait - he's parked in front of your house on the street? ie - not blocking the driveway?

I'm confused - why does it bother you? Perhaps it's a mate of one of your neighbors and they don't want to park in the driveway or there's no room?

I dunno - I'm from the city...and we don't claim parking spots...just b/c they're in front of our house....Chat Icon

Because it's a suburban neighborhood and no one parks on the street. Every one has driveways. If they are visiting some one and they have no room in their driveway they should park in front of their house. It's a little unsettling to see a strange car in front of the house that was never there before all night for the last few nights.

Perhaps it's a family friend/friend/booty call or something?

I dunno - I guess what struck me as the odd part is looking/waiting for the person and then asking them NOT to park in front of the house...

I naturally park in front of someone's house and NEVER park in their driveway/garage...but I will usually park right in front of their house. However, if someone ever approached me and said "please do not park in front of our house" I think I may go apeshyte....

again - it's the "city" in me...and unless there are designated parking spots (lines) like in a condo-area....I don't see how the owner of a home can ask someone NOT to park on the street - isn't that city/town property?

You are right! I had a neighbor who would have a hissy if we parked in front of his house and I went nuts on him lol

I think that the reason why the OP is concerned is because it's a strange car, meaning one that they've never seen around before and I'm assuming that this person can park anywhere else, but has chosen to in front of his. In the Burbs, people get very territorial about their space (including the parking spots in front of) lol

Okay - now I'm understanding a little bit more....I'm a dumb city girl who literally FIGHTS for a parking spot within a three block radius...let a lone in front of my own home.

That being said - Kevin/Cindy - I'd await them and see which house they go to...to ensure they're going to a house specifically on your block to settle your nerves. However, I wouldn't approach them about it - people are sick in this world, and the last thing you need is a psycho who knows where you live.

I grew up in Queens this is not some rant from someone who doesn't know that in some places you have no choice. What I'm saying is that we've been in the house a year in all this time this has never happened.

anything new or different would bother me in front of my house.

get the dirt to settle your mind.

Re: Okay would this bother you?

Considering I don't own the street in front of my house? No, it wouldn't bother me at all.

However, I think I might be a bit concerned from a safety standpoint of a strange car I've never seen suddenly parking in front of my house late at night every night. I might make a point to see who the driver is just to make sure I know who it is -- or if I don't, to make sure s/he knows I've seen him / her.

If it bothers you a LOT, park your car there for a few nights (assuming you get home first) and see what that car does. Chat Icon

ETA - I understand the concern, but strictly from a parking standpoint, no, this would't bother me. I grew up in Suburbia and people parked in front of our house all the time. It never bothered us. If I go visit my parents, I sometime park across the street from their house in front of their neighbor's house and it's never bothered her. (We're quite friendly. She'd say something if it did.)

If you're not using the space, then why worry about it -- STRICTLY from a parking standpoint. Safety, etc., I feel your concern.

Its very disconcerting especially if it is not a "regular" car..my dh gets very upset about this, I on the other hand do not care much if there is no one in the car as I figure the person must be visiting someone..but when there are people just sitting there in the car... this makes me nervous and we have called the police twice since owning this house to come and check the situation out..I think the local youths like to park over here and drink because our part of the block does not get alot of streetlamp light..

It's def more of a safety thing, I mean our dog is still a puppy. She barks at the bags of leaves sitting at the curb but isn't really much protection yet.

That's a good idea, tho they'll prob just park behind my car, which is still in front of our house. Or maybe they'll get the message.

ETA: We're not talking about during the day, we never see this car on the weekends. But the fact that the car just appears and stays all night, well it freaks me out that we never see the driver. We know all of our neighbor's cars and find it strange that this person would be visiting overnight and not park in front of the "visitees" house.

I don't think it would bother me.
When we visit my parents on Sunday, they have room for one extra car to fit on the driveway, if I get there before my brother, I win..LOL...
If not, then, Im on the street.
If my dad is working on the car or something then Im on the street, my brother is on the street, my sister's boyfriends car is on the street.
We take up the block. LOL.
Some of the neighbors (that have been there for years know us and don't mind). Some are new and look at like Ummm Do they think they own the street?

If there was someone sitting in the car, then, Yeah..I'd be bothered..Big time.

I understand the safety thing, but why not find out if they are any type of threat before you become the arsehole on the block that does that thing with his car.

I don't know Chat Icon other than it being a drug dealer or someone casing houses for home invasion planning, if it's just some harmless new boyfriend....I think it's kind of lame to block off the street like that.

parking in your driveway is ONE thing...but the street??

Re: Okay would this bother you?

When I lived in Franklin Square, my neighbor would make a huge deal about parking in front of his house and it used to piss me off to no end! He never parked his car in the street so why did he care? Sometimes there wouldn't be enough space for all the people coming over my house, and he'd always make a comment. We had an arguement because I told him I'll park where I damn well please because he does not own the street! Vent over ! lol

It's a little different if its not someone who lives on the block but I still don't think it's a big deal.Chat Icon

What you're doing is completely different and not wrong (IMO at least). You're visiting friends and family and most likely wind up parking in front of someone elses house b/c there's no other place to park.

What Kevin is talking about is someone just randomly parking in front of his and Cindy's house when there's plenty of other parking.

If in fact this person is going to another house on the block, be it they live there in an apartment or whatever, they should park in front of the house they're going into. KWIM?

Re: Okay would this bother you?

I'm from Queens too so I didn't really get it in the beginning of the post but now I understand more I think. What if it is like the neighbors out of town house guest or someone that is new to the neighborhood and you find out it is not a safety issue, would it still bother you that they are parking in front of the house?

I'm asking because we just moved to a new town and I have no idea about the etiquette of such situation.

Yes, bc then they should be parking in front of the neighbor's house. Not ours. Like Kevin said, it's an unwritten rule out here "in the country".

Re: Okay would this bother you?

Not at all but I'm from Queens,

Maybe it's a clueless visitor from Queens. When I visit people in LI or NJ I parkwherever. it might not be in front of the house, tt might be across the street, if I'm facing that way when I come down the block. Even at FH's house, I usually park across the street instead of making the U turn to park in front of his house. I didn't know I was breaking any "rules" Chat Icon
