Re: Okay would this bother you?
I can definitely see why you would be concerned. I don't think you are really "bothered" about someone parking in front of your house. I think you are "concerned" about the safety of your family because you don't know this person and you don't know their motive for parking in front of your house. So yes, I would definitely monitor the car, the driver and I would ask questions if I saw them parking there next time.

I didn't know I was breaking any "rules"
Do you park there from midnight to 6AM? For several days in a row? I think Kevin's message is getting lost.

I actually did for awhile in college. i might get in anywhere from 11pm to 6am from rehearsal/load in and then leave early in the morning for class or to go home.

Re: Okay would this bother you?
Sometimes my neighbor next doo parks in front of my house because he drives a limo and it fits in front of my house but not his. this doesn't bother me.
HOWEVER.. a neighbor across the street diagnol from us... use to always park in front of our house. There was never anyone in front of their house. there is a house directly across fom them (my next door neighbor) and no one ever parks there... and their driveway was always empty. It totally bugged me. Don't know why but it did.
I grew up on long Island. My SIL lived in Queens for years I KNOW how hard it is to park there but it's not hard HERE

I'm from Queens to so I didn't really get it in the beginning of the post but now I understand more I think. What if it is like the neighbors out of town house guest or someone that is new to the neighborhood and you find out it is not a safety issue, would it still bother you that they are parking in front of the house?
I'm asking because we just moved to a new town and I have no idea about the etiquette of such situation.
Okay to clarify.
The entire street is empty. It's Midnight. I do not know who this person is. They are not my guests in my home. If you come to visit some one and the entire street is empty why not park in front of the person's house you are coming to see. If it was a crowded street with lots of cars then no it would not phase me.
Got it. Makes sense. I forgot the part about the rest of the street being empty including in front of whoever's house the person may be visiting. In that case I would probably be annoyed.

Re: Okay would this bother you?
I think it's really funny that nobody parks on the street. By me, we stalk spots. I know that if I get home at a certain time, I will get a spot, but if I'm 5 minutes late the JERK across the street in the green mini van will get my spot If I get one in front of my house, or my moms house (same block) it's like hitting the lotto And, G-D FORBID I have to go around the corner, then I get pizzed

It would bother me but I would also know there's nothing I could do about it since I don't own the street.
ditto. unless they're blocking your driveway i dont think there's really much you can do about it.

Honestly....I think its a little nitpicky(is that a word?) I could see if you didn't have enough parking spaces but since that is not the case then no it would not bother me

People park in front of my house all the time and although it bothers me, I would never say they can't. I don't own the street. Why start a fight?

Re: Okay would this bother you?
I think it's kind of funny how the people who live in Queens don't get it. BTW, not a knock in any way...
But, I totally understand your situation and would definitely be ticked off. IF someone was visiting the people across the street and it was an occasional thing, no biggie. This person is obviously showing up late at night and leaving in the morning. Wether it be for a booty call, visiting or meeting his/her lover...it would annoy me if they parked in front of my house every night.

Pfffftttt
My neighbor's son parks in front of our house kinda when he is home from college for the summer (my mom parks there too) It doesn't bother me at all. My neighbor across the street lives by herself and has one car that she keeps in the driveway at all times. When we first moved into our house my brother would come over in his van to help us out and he would park in front of her house. When he would leave for lunch she would quickly come out and move her car right in front so no one else could fit. She would actually get out of the car and check to make sure not one could get in front or behind her. We would watch from the window and crack up
I do think if a strange car was parked in front of my house at weird hours of the night for a few nights, I would be a little weirded out by it.

Re: Okay would this bother you?
yes, it would bother me. in the 'burbs, where everyone has a driveway, there is NO reason to park in front of a house, especially if it's not the home of the person you are there to see, and DEFINITELY if there are NO other cars on the street. that would be VERY disconcerting to me.
sorry for the caps but i totally get where kevin and cindy are coming from and i would be concerned enough to "stalk" this car's driver to find out where they were going.

Re: Okay would this bother you?
I grew up in Queens too but everyone had driveways. Still, there was parking on the street and I never thought of it. I never even heard of this when I was living in an area of Queens with no parking at all. Either way, I never gave a second thought to whose house I parked in front of when I visited someone - on LI or otherwise. The first place I heard of the irritation of it was on LIW. Now that I am a Long Islander and know of this irritation, I guess I notice it more. We have 3 spots in front of my house. Our driveway is small and can only fit one car. So we have 2 parked on the street. The 3rd spot is usually taken by the neighbor's boyfriend. Why he can't park in front of their house, I don't know. Plus they have a 3 car driveway and 2 cars. I guess I'd question it more (in my mind) if we had no spots and he was always parking here. But I'd never say something to someone over it. I just couldn't imagine coming outside and asking someone why they are parking there. The Queens in me doesnt feel the ownership of parking spots like true Long Islanders do (not a slam, just a different outlook on it growing up) If it was someone sitting in their car all the time, I'd worry more bc I'd think it's someone who is stalking or casing a house for a crime.

Yes, I would be bothered.
It's not how we roll in the burbs.
Same here - it's a bit weird and doesn't follow the unspoken rule of parking in front of who you are visiting (unless there are a lot of guests and then you just line up where you can)

So last night they park there again.
I watch this person walk up the cross street and turn the corner. So they are parking at the least a block away.
Fast forward to 5 mins. ago. I'm outside shoveling and here comes this woman to the car. I have a pleasant conversation with her telling her I took a tree branch off her car that broke off my tree and that I would not park there. I also told her that we have had trouble in the past with the people next door to me vandalizing cars that were parked there and she said "Oh, Okay I won't park here anymore", and that she understood my points and was not offended and apologized if it made my family nervous.
Hopefully this is the end of it. Thanks again for all your input.
Awesome! but I'm still curious as to why she parked in front of YOUR house! lol

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
I totally get why you would be concerned about this. I'm glad you were able to speak with the person who parked in front of your house.
The fact that she parked a block away from her destination adds intrigue though!!! Ooh, the stories we can make up about that!
Now...did you REALLY remove a branch from her car, or was that just your to excuse to tell her to scram??
And to all those from Queens who venture out to LI, don't feel bad parking in front of other people's houses. You're a guest visiting a neighbor. We're ok with that. Well, as long as there isn't any other available spots in front of the house you're visiting!
