Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
I live in the burbs and when I get out of the house in the morning there is always a car parked in the front of my house. It is gone by the time I get home. One day I woke up early around 5 and saw the guy whose car it is and he was car pooling and parked his car in front of my house while his friend picked him up. Do I like it? No, but as you said, it is an "unwritten" rule, meaning what recourse do you have? I would feel weird telling him not to park there when, unless there are signs, he can park whereever he wants.

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
Ok had to edit my post - didn't realize it was an issue of safety. Ok if your whole block is empty and there's a strange car that parks in front of your house - yeah that would freak me out to no end!
I thought it was just a matter of you not wanting someone in front of your house. Perhaps see if you can spot the driver and which house he/she goes to. Otherwise, what I would do, is talk to my neighbors (that I'm close with) about it and say it just freaks me out. Maybe together you can kind of piece it together.

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
I live next to a LIPA right-of-way. Cars used to park there all the time. Many years ago, there was this one particular car that would park there late at night and the owner would not return until the next morning. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what was going on. I used to sit outside in the summer with my friend next door until all hours of the night just talking. Now, she had hedges that would partially block her front door, so, if you were sitting there, no one could see you. One night, along comes Mr. Charm and Personality. He parks his car and as he passes us we both say in a sing-song voice "we know where you're going". We never saw him again.

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
We've lived on corner lots for the past 7 years, and will for at least another 5. So we're basically screwed.
Good thing we can fit four cars in our driveway!
That's the other unwritten rule I think... If the house you're going to doesn't have enough room, park on the corner. Because corner people have two streets of parking.
Kevin, glad you got that settled. As to why she was parking there, did you notice if she was doing the walk of shame?

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
And another note... The renters on our block were disliked to begin with because they were getting a free ride on taxes. And didn't care much about the neighborhood.
So when the renters parked in front of someone else's house, there were always complaints. I guess they figured, why care about them if they're transient.

Re: Okay would this bother you? Update from this morning
There is a woman who is a matron on a schoolbus that has it's 1st pickup spot/drop off spot in front of my parents. Her car is there religiously M/F between 7:00 and 10:00 and then from 2:00 to whenever. Doesn't bother us at all

Perhaps she is having a discreet affair and did not want to park in front of the house to which she was going.

If we lived on the same block I would guess that it was my MIL. That idiot parks half-way down the block when she visits us like she has no clue which house she has to go to.

What if it is like the neighbors out of town house guest or someone that is new to the neighborhood and you find out it is not a safety issue, would it still bother you that they are parking in front of the house?
Yes, bc then they should be parking in front of the neighbor's house. Not ours. Like Kevin said, it's an unwritten rule out here "in the country".
I grew up on LI and it wasn't an unwritten rule in my neighborhood. (Though as I said before, I see the security concern in this situation and would have been on the lookout, too!)

So last night they park there again.
I watch this person walk up the cross street and turn the corner. So they are parking at the least a block away.
Fast forward to 5 mins. ago. I'm outside shoveling and here comes this woman to the car. I have a pleasant conversation with her telling her I took a tree branch off her car that broke off my tree and that I would not park there. I also told her that we have had trouble in the past with the people next door to me vandalizing cars that were parked there and she said "Oh, Okay I won't park here anymore", and that she understood my points and was not offended and apologized if it made my family nervous.
Hopefully this is the end of it. Thanks again for all your input.
she parked a BLOCK AWAY
this is salacious! you didn't get details!! is it an illicit affair.
I was wondering...if they were someplace naughty and didn't want to call suspicion.
you were aiding and aBEDDING an star crossed affair ...how exciting (LOL. I am getting carried away...it's Friday. I'm bored)
I find it very weird that she was parking so far away on an empty street. My mind's making up stories, too!
She should at least have the sense to park somewhere different every day!

Hmmmm. Sounds like she is sneaking over to visit someone late at night that she does not want to be seen visiting so she parks on your street and walks the rest of the way
Either that or she is casing a house out and timing her get away to get back to her vehicle

Its hard to say. Just like a previous poster, I am in Queens and parking in front of other peoples houses is how we get parking. So I dont understand the suburban neighborhood very well. I guess if thats how you guys do things, it would bother me too.
I do live in a house in Queens, with a driveway. We have a spot right in front of the house though. ANYONE parks there, I cannot imagine going out there and telling them not to..unless I want a punch in the nose!
lol- when I lived in queens this is how it worked there as well. Out here though I think it would definitely bother me (I live way out east and it's not your regular street type setup- no curbs, etc...)

I wish I had a set spot. We play musical cars any time we go out to try to keep decent spots. People will get into a huge fight over a spot here
