Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....
I think it's more important to talk to your pediatrician to get the answers.
Hollywood can keep it's book. I have no faith in an "actress" whose biggest claim to fame is MTV's Singled Out.

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....
What I love is that people here and everywhere attack her and Say Oh , Her son was mis diagnosed, shes not an expert, she doesnt know what she is talking about....she was on a bad sitcom or bad game show.....SO WHAT? She is a Mother.....She is an EXPERT on her Child.
What makes anyone here or in the media an expert either? Does one Mom with a child who is autistic become more of an expert then the next mom? What if someone on here wrote a book? Would we say, Well sorry no respect for soemone who spent their time on internet boards from me?
Sorry, just a rant on the judgemental nature of people in general which makes me sick.
Bottom line...If what she did helped her son, APPLAUD her....For goodness sakes, praise her for helping her son.
Thats what life is about. Helping the children.
If you dont agree with her, move on, but to knock her and her journey is just selfish and kinda naive in my opinion.
My son is not on the spectrum but if he was, I'd read it all, everything ever written and take it from there.
I think also ( my opinion) some Mom's, some people in general without medical backgrounds know more then Dr's do.
Sure Dr's go to college for ten billion years but I can tell you I know more about a condition I have then a Dr. I saw did.
So Dr's. Are not end all be all's either.
Again, I apologize, flame me all you like, but I get so heated ever time I see this Subject and people just spewing nonsense about her.
I dont think she should have done what she has done in terms of making it seem her child was cured, I do not personally agree with her, but ya know what I'm ESTATIC her son is happy and healthy.
She has done nothing to try to hurt the children, her goal is to help and while some feel she hasn't...and I may agree...why is it sooo wrong that she is trying sooo hard to open people's eyes?

i agree that its great for her that whatever she has done has "worked" for her and her son... but i think she is instilling false hope in parents with autistic children... thats all. to each its own and i said that on the other thread - im not looking down upon ppl who have read her books and tried what she did
ETA: and i do happen to believe that there is the possibility that her son was mis-diagnosed - IMO

How? If anyone is "stupid" enough to believe that what works for her works for everyone, ( and I dont claim having heard her say that?) then, good for them for being duped.
And I agree with you, I think her son may have been mis diagnosed, but thats just my opinion and I say it with the utmost respect for her battle for WHATEVER it is her Son has/had..
But sometimes just plain disrespect comes across for her and I have yet to see it justified.

As a researcher who 'went to school for 10 billion years' I can honestly say I agree with you.... There's an arrogance in the medical community... even the FDA. Often, I see sloppy conclusions drawn from research that does not support the theory. then, they will be arrogant and refuse to hear antectodal evidence of what happened to their specific patient... becuase anyone w/o a an MD is a moron, right? No one knows what causes autism... so any physician who is dismissive of a paren who observed something unusual is not a good physician IMO.
If it makes you feel better, physicians often are dismissive of me as if I'm a moron too...

That I understand.....But I did some support for a campaign she had, The Walk on Congress.....
its not about NOT giving vaccines, it is about making "greener vaccines"...
...without the chemicals many feel are not needed ( again, I odnt know if they are needed or not, but I would love to see them greener for sure).....
Those who feel the vaccine causes autism believe its the ingredients added to them that are harmful. I DO NOT belive vaccines cause autism but I do believe that the ingredients are scary and I am all for trying to make them greener.
I mean I will be honest, I dont like Jenny MC carthy, she annoys me a lot for many reasons, but I think mis info about what she is saying is always thrown around and not just with her, with others who say things against the grain and we all should be about finding out the truth to help all our respective children kwim?

i havent read her books and i already admited to whatever i know about them, i've heard through word of mouth... and the only reason i have a negative view on her books is b/c she is claiming to have helped her son "recover" or be "cured" whatever phrase she uses... thats what makes me angry... write a book about what you did to "help" your son have a "higher functioning level"... its just her choice of words she uses that rubs me the wrong way.. not the message shes giving out
im all for doing what you can to help your child with any type of diagnosis... if i wasnt, i wouldnt be a social worker in the field... all im saying, is that from what i HEARD, her choice of words are misleading
so please dont think im knocking her efforts as a mother, b/c im not

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....
Let me clarify my issue with someone like her being so vocal. Not everyone is doing their own research. We live in a day and age where media figures are worshipped. Here is a book all packaged and looking shiny, pretty, and easily accessible. Like fast food. It takes more effort to find all the research out there and the wording in journals are not geared for lay people. So all the info that is out there for people who may not know there are many facets to this controversy have access to this view only, and may be impressionable to accept this as fact. Someone wrote a book debunking the vaccine theory. I forgot his name but will post the link later. And know what? The guy can't even do a book tour because he is receiving tons of DEATh threats!!!! Anyone who threatens death on someone is afraid of something. Why?

ahhhh this POV makes sense and I understand what you mean.
I tend to be a bit hyper adamant about people doing research and cannot fathom a Mom not researching till she was blue when she had a child who is or might fall onto the spectrum....
BUT....your right...There are Moms out there who DONT do the research and maybe her status as a celebrity would sway them to her book vs. another.
I can see your point.

I can see your point. when I tell people what I do for a living and they tell me they heard autism is caused by vaccines, I ask them where they got that information and its usually from Jenny or just something they heard from wherever. That bothers me. If they even said, oh, I heard it based on Dr. Smiths research even, I would feel better about it. And then I have to explain both sides to the argument, and you know what? The other side is less intersting because it is based on science and research.

there are more diagnoses. Not many more cases. I treat misdiagnosed children, and have been on teams who have undiagnosed misdiagnosed kids. Plus it needs to be put out here that Asperger's syndrome wasn't in the dsm4 until 1994. Before that these kids and individuals were not diagnosed on the autism spectrum, and brings up todays numbers that we hear about....

I am also from former USSR country(next to Russia) and I have few friends who are drs and my best friend is married to a pediatrician. I have asked them and I have asked around and did some research to find out more about Autism in the country and how often kids are diagnosed there. surprisingly not much, veeery few cases(more like 1 last year) of autism diagnosed every year. Parents are very aware(and knowledgeable) of the spectrum disorders ,but as I said not too many cases reported. Kids get vaccinated over there just like they do here, the only difference is that they are spread out more and vaccines are made in Europe(not sure if that matters at all). I think there is many factors to it and many causes. And I think we still have a long way to go to finding out what exactly is causing ASD.

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....
I'm a special ed teacher, and it's sad to hear that JM is gloating that her son is "cured." Over the last twelve years of working with kids with Autism (both in the public and private settings), I know my research and unfortunately it doesn't include "curing Autism." As other posters have mentioned, it's possible that doctors didn't diagnose her son properly and it's possible that he doesn't have Autism at all.
I wish there was a cure... and I wish I could give the parents of the kids I teach a way to get their children to be typically developing again...
I'm glad Jenny M's son is "cured" from whatever it is that he had, but I know that it wasn't a cure from Autism.

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....
I don't believe a word she says about this issue. I think she's a lovely woman with a great sense of humor, who loves her son a whole lot, but I just don't trust her opinion on this matter. If I need information on a medical issue -I will find research from doctors, or qualified experts. Not celebrities who have a child who may or may not have Autism. That's just me.
I highly doubt that if I had a child with Autism and I wrote this book, anyone would read it. Simply being a celebrity does not make you an expert, or a reliable source.
But, just out of curiosity...why is this posted on every board?

you know ladies...i just wanted to know about this issue..and i asked my fds from russia..what they know about autism..and if they know...anyone...that has it!?
Many people know about it because we ..here have it...and they hear about it now more....but the cases themselves.....hmmm...not much....i cant say ...100%...but...its very interesting..because..over here its a big deal now..over there...they dont know much about it...(they do know what it is..n stuff...)but never saw it....
And I think we still have a long way to go to finding out what exactly is causing ASD.
i agree with you! deff because they are made in europe..too!!!
