2 year old not know colors?

when would you be concerned? I literally showed Ian a red block and said...this is a red block. rrrrrrrrred. i made it fun sounding. then i asked immediately what color is it? he says purple. i just said red!! everything is purple! hes 26 months. shouldnt he know some basic colors by now?

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

Have you been consistently teaching them? I would be concerned if after 2-3 months of consistently teaching a two year old his/her basic colors if they did not catch on. Is there any color blindness in his family?

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

I think it's totally normal. I know DS knows a lot of stuff. I'll ask him something, tell him the answer then ask again... he gives me the wrong answer. He's only 2.
Some kids don't even know their colors, #'s, and letters till they go to school. SOme kids take longer for it to process.

My DS still has issues telling me something hurts. I taught him about a Boo Boo Buddy for when he gets a Boo Boo.
The other day he fell and cried to me. I asked him where the Boo Boo was and he pointed to the freezer Chat Icon

he goes to daycare so i know they work on colors. i havent been so pushy about it at home, but i should. he already has eye issues, but i dont think hes color blind (and none in family) cause 2 seconds after i tell him the color is red he comes back with purple. hes not even repeating. other than that hes fine.

DS (24 months) does the same thing. Everything is yellow. He knows other colors, he's just screwing with me. Seems to be a theme with him Chat Icon . I wouldn't worry.

DS does the same thing but, his answer is yellow instead of purple - he'll be 2 on Wednesday.

I'm not concerned - I just don't think it interests him - he can tell you the difference between a school bus and a commuter bus though!

Yeah, if you are not consistently teaching them I find at this age they forget, so I would not be concerned.

Yup, the Boo Boo Buddy lives in the freezer and helps him when he falls or gets hurt. Doesn't quit get that a Boo Boo is not the same as the Boo Boo Buddy. Chat Icon
I had to laugh though when he did that.

I was really worried about DD...I swear I think she was over 3 when she finally knew her colors...I thought she was colorblind! Suddenly it all came together for her and now she's a very bright 4 1/2 year old.

I wouldnt worryChat Icon its still early. DD is 22 months and just learned most of her colors around 2 weeks ago. Before that, no matter how much we played/reviewed with her them, she seemed to just favor yellowChat Icon

ETA: after reading other responses I think its hysterical that the kids all seem to prefer yellow!!!

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

Can he point to colors when you tell him to? Identifying is the first step, then the ability to verbally express it comes later.

Start by pointing to various shapes and colors and label them like crazy. Then have him point to them.

DS is 26 months also and just within the last few weeks or so did he finally get his colors correct. For the longest time everything was green and then one day he just started referring to colors correctly.

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

I really would not be worried. I was a preschool teacher about 10 years ago and I remember 4 year olds not knowing all of their colors.

I would just try reinforcing colors throughout the day when you two are doing things together. Like, get me the green ball...ect. You may want to see if he knows his colors by just touching. It may ease your mind a bit. So...touch the blue car or get me the blue car. Instead of asking him to name the color. My girls are really good at identifying letters receptively, but they have a difficult time recalling the names verbally.

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

My DD thinks everything is "geen" and she's going to be 2 on Wednesday. No worries - totally normal!
She knows the book "brown bear" by heart, and will say the purple cat is "geen". I think she just really likes green :)

Xaviers color is green. Everything is green. Before dinner we do flash cards or color or play dough. I only pull out the basic colors though. He can say the other colors but when I ask him what color is this they are all green. Must be the age.

Re: 2 year old not know colors?

My 3 year old still doesn't know all his colorsChat Icon We practice all the time, but he just mixes them up. He's finally getting better and usually knows blue, but the others are hit or miss. My niece was the same way so I'm not too worried!

My gosh, I thought I was the only one with this worry -- God bless you women, LOL!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

One of my twins, Nicky, knows his yellow and orange colors everytime I ask. When I ask him about red, green, blue and purple colors, he rarely gets them right. (he will be 3 in March). His twin gets it right everytime. I am worried Nicky is color blind, but maybe, from reading these posts, he isn't. Not that it is so terrible, but I obviously would rather he NOT be, LOL!

DS gets confused too. He usually says things are green.

I think it's because when he hears "color" he associates it with the word "green". When he hears "count or number" he thinks "two". When I say "letter" he says "R".
He is starting to understand shapes though.

Natie is the same way! Everything is green, BUT when we actually point to something green & ask him what color it is, he says red.Chat Icon

Funny thing - he consistantly gets pink, brown & orange right...then one day I realized - those are the colors of Dunkin Donuts & lately there have been a lot of birthdays at school where the parent brought in munchkins. Chat Icon
