2.5 year old talking gibberish - something to be concerned about?

My DS has and has always had great verbal skills - he started talking very early (by 16 mos had too many words to count) and was talking in sentances by 18 months - so that is not the issue - by 2 he was talking like 2.5 year olds , even strangers always ask how old he is and comment on how well he speaks - so I know there is nothing wrong with him in that respect which is what makes me more nervous about this.

He has always been really shy though around people he doesn't know so I am wondering if that is the issue. Forever he has always been really quiet and non-verbal around strangers until he gets to know them. Once he is comfortable he talks non-stop but until then you would think he couldn't speak. He will speak in a quiet barely audible voice if at all.

Here is the strange thing that I am getting concerned about - for at least the past few months - my DS will go into this strange diatribe when he is in situations where he doesn't know someone or hasn't seen someone in a while and is put on the spot. It doesn't happen often but, when it does it is VERY strange. It's hard to explain - its almost like he just goes crazy speaking in gibberish. He will talk non-stop about crazy subjects without making much sense. Although there is an underpinning of reality - it just doesn't come off as making sense. And, in between he will laugh nervously.

Is this something anyone else has ever experienced or do you think something is wrong?

ETA: to describe it better - it's almost as if he is trying to talk too fast - like imitating an adult on the phone or something -moving from one topic to the next really quickkly if that makes sense.

bc i know a friend of mine who sent her son to daycare, similar thing happened, they dont know if it was something that happened at daycare that triggered it or what.

do you think maybe someone creeps him out? or there is no consistency with who the person is he didnt see in a while?

It's hard to know b/c so far it has only happened a few times. It just happened tonight in front of my DH for the first time (someone stopped by that DS has never met and was trying to talk to him). And DH was concerned - he was asking me if he had ever done this b/f and I told him a few times and that is when he started getting me worried. So, Im not sure - it hasn't happened often enough for me to know if there is any consistency.
