Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

From Schlussel's December 18 column:

Many months ago, readers began asking me whether Barack Obama is Muslim. Since he identifies as a Christian, I said, "no," and responded that he was not raised by his Kenyan father.

But, then, I decided to look further into Obama's background. His full name -- as by now you have probably heard -- is Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. Hussein is a Muslim name, which comes from the name of Ali's son -- Hussein Ibn Ali. And Obama is named after his late Kenyan father, the late Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., apparently a Muslim.

And while Obama may not identify as a Muslim, that's not how the Arab and Muslim Streets see it. In Arab culture and under Islamic law, if your father is a Muslim, so are you. And once a Muslim, always a Muslim. You cannot go back. In Islamic eyes, Obama is certainly a Muslim. He may think he's a Christian, but they do not.

Then, there are the other items in his background. As best-selling author Scott Turow wrote in Salon, Obama went to a Muslim school for two years in Indonesia. His mother, Anna, married an Indonesian man (likely another Muslim, as Indonesia is Muslim-dominated and has the largest Islamic population in the world).

And Obama has a "born-again" affinity for the nation of his Muslim father, Kenya, and his Kenyan sister. (Although Kenya is largely Christian, it has a fast-growing Muslim population that has engaged in a good deal of religious violence and riots against Christians. And Kenyan courts will apply Sharia law, when the participants are Muslim.) Wrote Turow:

Obama's father died in a traffic accident in Nairobi in 1982, but while Obama was working in Chicago, he met his Kenyan sister, Auma, a linguist educated in Germany who was visiting the United States. When she returned to Kenya in 1986 to teach for a year at the University of Nairobi, Obama finally made the trip to his father's homeland he had long promised himself. There, he managed to fully embrace a heritage and a family he'd never fully known and come to terms with his father, whom he'd long regarded as an august foreign prince, but now realized was a human being burdened by his own illusions and vulnerabilities.

So, even if he identifies strongly as a Christian, and even if he despised the behavior of his father (as Obama said on Oprah); is a man who Muslims think is a Muslim, who feels some sort of psychological need to prove himself to his absent Muslim father, and who is now moving in the direction of his father's heritage, a man we want as President when we are fighting the war of our lives against Islam? Where will his loyalties be?

Is that even the man we'd want to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, if Hillary Clinton offers him the Vice Presidential candidacy on her ticket (which he certainly wouldn't turn down)?

NO WAY, JOSE ... Or, is that, HUSSEIN?

I COMPLETELY disagree with the idea that we are fighting a war against ISLAM.

We've gone to war against Christian countries with Christian presidents, have we not?

I may not support Obama politically, but that article is very unfair, IMHO.

Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

I have so many problems with all the references to "once a muslin always a muslim", HE may define himself as christian but THEY do not etc...

I like Obama. I think he is heartfelt and passionate and could cause great changes for our country. I think he is sincere and really does love America and what it stands for.

The hype over him not saluting the flag is not true either.....it was during the national anthem that he did not put his hand over his heart, but not everyone does...he salutes the flag and recites the pledge of allegiance every time he is in congress, and I think people are really picking things to hold against him.

I don't know him personally of course, lol, but I don't question his loyalities. I do not believe he'd put himself in this race if he did not love this country and its values.

I agree with this. I've seen the picture and see NOTHING disrespectful about what he's doing. Plenty of people stand like that for the National Anthem.

Like I said, I don't agree with him politically, but these ridiculous accusations have got to stop.

I guess whether he is or isn't doesn't bother me. It has nothing to do with who I pick for President.

It's funny b/c I don't agree with him politically either (well not all areas) but I like him. Lol. I really think he could change things even if I may not agree with him in all political areas...the positives he could do have outweighed the negatives in my mind.

The accusations are indeed insane.

I agree on both counts. He seems like quite a likeable guy.

And these accusations ARE insane.

Articles like this just serve to give Republicans a bad name. Let's cut the crap and worry about the real issues facing the nation, not this stuff.

And this is yet another reason why I don't think Obama is electable. While I disagree with a lot of this, a lot of people don't. And for some people, you hear a muslim name on a black man, all sorts of assumptions come up.

I also don't think that Hillary is electable either.

I just wish that the Democrats would focus on who is electable. While ideally this country should be open to a black president with a muslim name, or a female president, I just don't think we are ready.Chat Icon

That is great and very open minded of you. BUT the reality of it is, there are many people in this country that don't look at it that way. The reality is Democrats need to pick an electable candidate, not a candidate who should be electable in an ideal world.

That's his middle name.

So now we're going to pick the President based on whether or not you like their middle name?

C'mon. My middle name is French. I'm a native-born citizen with 100% Irish ancestry. I guess you wouldn't elect me either, b/c I have a French name? Chat Icon

It's a name!! How could you not feel comfortable electing someone based on a name. I don't like the name Mitt but that's not my reason for not wanting him in office. Start looking at the real issues.

Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

but here are people worrying about if BO and HC are electable for the same reasons we wish we were more enlightened...

how about this...just CAST YOUR VOTE.

let the chips fall where they may.

both candidates are doing great. this is an exciting race. Hilary is doing well with the oldies, and Barack is doing well with the young.

people ARE looking past gender and color.

but asswipes like this guy will always have something to say.

but just b/c one says it..doesn't mean JACK.

hil and obama both got MILLIONS of votes yesterday.

and there differences are basically nuances...I would GLADLY vote for either one of them.

the fact that this is also history making is just nutella on my bread!

I'm still waiting for your POINT.

The man is a Christian, first of all, and second of all, his religion shouldn't matter in this race.

I'm saddened also that you seem to think that ALL Muslims are extremists and anti-American. I'm more deeply saddened that too many people actually think you represent the views of the majority of conservative voters.

I'm pretty openly politically conservative, and I'm happy to jump on the "this article is absolutely disgusting crap" bandwagon.

Articles like this serve only to distract the voting public from the real issues facing voters and this nation. They show a complete and utter lack of intelligent thought and a complete and utter lack of respect for true American values.

Considering a year ago teachers were getting nooses tied on their office doors, swatstickas were being carved into cars in Brooklyn- and this is in NYC- a very diverse city. According to wiki, The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project counted 844 active hate groups in the United States in 2006.Chat Icon I don't think we are nearly as advanced a society as many of us hope.

Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

My mother and I were having this argument last night...she has heard this before and believes it.
I find it very narrow-minded to use someones name and his/her parents history against them.
Maybe we should focus on Hilary staying with her husband who cheated on her just so she would have access to the Presidency in the future.

It would be wonderful if we could focus on issues instead of gender and race, but unfortunately we don't.Chat Icon
