Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

My problem with Obama is solely his lack of experience. After 8 years of turmoil I'm not sure that we should put an inexperienced president in office. This country needs a lot of fixing up and from what I've seen from Obama I just don't think he is the right person for right now. But if it comes down to him or McCain I would probably go with Obama.

As far as the comments about him being black and Hillary being a woman, unfortunately that's what this race has come down to. Would we rather have a woman president or a black president? That's all people are talking about. And since this is going to be historic I can't say that I blame people for looking at that first. Either way we have a chance of breaking barriers that people fought for many years for. I do think that should be celebrated in this election. I wouldn't vote for one candidate over the other because of it. But if all things were equal it might sway my vote.

My dear friend is Muslim, her son is the same age as mine(almost 21) & his name is Hussein, we call him "huss". He had a terrible time because of his name the last 6 or so years & its terrible how little info people need to make a judgment of someone.
I do think however that the religion of our potential president & how strongly or radically they believe in it is VERY important. I do not want another president that tries to push his or her religious beliefs onto me. Nor do I want a president that bases our foreign policy on those beliefs.

I personally think Obama is grossly under qualified for the job. Honestly I'm not sure Hillary is any better, the two of them have spent the last 18 months outside of the states they are working for campaigning for a new job.

I agree with Kelly too.

none of the candidates thrill me, but I think McCain is the most well suited for the job.

I agree with you. I would have voted for Rudy if he were still in because he was Republican, but on the light side with some of the issues I feel strongly about. On one hand, the main card he played was 9/11 and I think that led to his downfall. Anyway, I agree with this. I think there is a chance for something monumental to happen. I feel more comfortable with Obama than with Hilary. I think it's amazing and wonderful that a woman might get in there...but the dems and foreign policy don't really mix and right now, that scares me...that they'll test her on that for all that she is and we'll have another horrible attack or something. edited for sp.

I disagree with this - but I'm not sure if it's just the way I read it.

I don't think any candidates religious beliefs and how strongly they do or do not believe in them is really any of our business. What's important in my opinion is how they're able to separate those beliefs from their job! A president needs to realize that their religion should not - at any time - enter into the picture!

So yes, I do agree with you in that I dont' want any president to push their religious beliefs on me or foreign policy, etc, etc. But I wouldn't deny them the right to their religious beliefs no matter how strongly they believe in them.

I think Osama is an evangelical Christian with Muslim sympathies. He doesn't wear it on his sleeve, which is good, but inevitably any leader is somewhat swayed by their morals which are tied to their religion.

Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

I don't think we should be electing (or not electing) anyone because of their race or gender. IMO, votes should be cast based on their policies, what they will do for the country, and their experience.

My problem with Obama is inexperience. He's charismatic no doubt. I don't agree with all his stances, but I find his ability to connect with an audience incredible. But - I don't think that's enough to make anyone the best guy (or gal) for the job. This is the biggest job probably in the world. A big company wouldn't hire someone as their CEO just because they sounded good and said all the right stuff - they would look at experience at doing things they are talking about. Being the leader of this country, and in turn a major world leader, is a bigger job than that and I am just not comfortable with his inexperience.

I agree, I do not care what a candiadate's religious beliefs are as long as they do not want to push it on me. Like Bush has done.
This is also the reason I am scared of Mike Huckabee. He has openly stated he wants to push is conservative christian views on the country.

Unfortunately though, this is not the sentiment of many Americans. A huge number of Americans, especially in the middle states, are conservative and want a candiate that reflects their values. In fact, I saw a poll the other day that gave this as one of the top things republican voters are looking for - someone who has the same values as them. How do you think Bush won the last election? People already weren't happy with him, but he was riding the coatails of 9/11 and preaching about being againsts abortion and gay marriage - so he met the values of these people and they voted for him.

When Obama first made is run for the presidency, I KNEW people would have a problem with it. Not because of his color, but because of his name. I said, oh those narrow minded people are going to think the name Obama sounds too much like Osama. I didn't know about his middle name but it sounds like I wasn't too far off.

Same for Hillary Clinton, not because of her name, but because she is a strong woman who speaks her mind, people hate her.

I find it very, very sad we live in a country that is supposed to be the greatest, but really is backwards in many ways of thinking.

Point taken. What I think is probably saddest is that if you look at the 'values' of most world religions - they're basically the same. Don't kill others. Be respectful. Don't steal. Don't be envious. Basically, be good people.

Very true. But here the "values" that people are most concerned about are gay marriage and abortion.

heh, you hardly have to worry about THAT. There were 2 major terrorist attacks (one aimed at LAX, and the other at the Seattle Space Needle) that were queitly stopped under Clinton.

I've never figured out how republicans can have the rep of being pro-homeland security after bungling the prevention of a massive terrorist attack (despite a huge paper trail from the CIA suggesting one was imminent), AND letting New Orleans citizens sink into the water after Katrina.... once again, they saw it coming, and the feds did nothing to help, and almost nothing to help rebuild... and even TURNED AWAY european hospital ships.... out of stupid arrogant pride

That should earn them a special spot in history as being inept in the homeland security dept.... not trailblazers....

Um, the Repubilcans did not cause 9/11- Islamic Terrorists did and Katrina was caused by forces beyond our human control. Please get your info. from more factual sources.

Weren't there terrorist attacks under Clinton? The USS Cole? Some things can't always be foreseen. Look at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I know it wasn't a terrorist attack, but do we blame a political party for not seeing that coming? I don't know.....

I will agree that Katrina was a total disaster though.....Terrible how that was handled.....

Re: Barack Hussein Obama - Muslim?

I lived in Seattle when that happened. It was NOT quiet when I was there. And there was nothing done under Clinton when the WTC was attacked the first time, or when USS Cole was bombed. There are many things Clinton did and did not do that helped lead to 9/11. I do not blame him soley, but I do believe he, as well as his administration should take some of the blame.

He bombed and killed a lot of people and places, just because he did not declare war, does not mean there was peace.

that's how it goes. You have to campaign for the job of President. Every senator, governor or likewise campaigns out of their state for the job. I happen to agree that it's not a slam dunk for either of these candidates. I think Obama is too green and Hillary does not have the mass appeal..that could hurt us overseas.
