someone riddle me this: Cardinal Egan is upset with Rudy Guiliani for taking communion during the Pope's visit
when he asked him NOT to b/c of his pro-choice views.
Guiliani has NEVER had an abortion (at least of a fetus...morals and his brain are another story  )
but he HAS broken at least ONE of the 10 commandments (thou shalt not commit adultery)
explain to me how his view on abortion...a position on a "sin" which he could NEVER possible commit prohibits him from receiving communion from the Pope b/c of failing to adhere to the rules of the church (and again, in reality, he has no other choice but to adhere)
BUT
if he was anti abortion, he'd be able to receive even though he ACTIVELY commited a MORTAL sin by cheating on his wife, getting a divorce, and marrying his mistress?

I assumed it was because of his multiple divorces.
I think injecting politics is ridiculous. Can you actually be excommunicated for supporting abortion rights?
I know divorce is considered automatic ex-communication, although for any sin you can confess and be absolved and re-communicated, but the fact that he has not gotten an anulment and continues to live in an adulterous "marriage" would make it seem he is still disqualified.

Ugh.
I think it all comes down to how you see your religion and abortion rights.
I can see why they do this, though I disgaree. The issue is that he is such a high-profile Catholic. People seeing it on TV all over the world can get the impression that it is ok to support abortions, which are 100% wrong in the eyes of the catholic church.
If he were a leader who was letting people commit genocide or other heinous crimes without retribution, I don't think most people would question Egan's stance. In the eyes of the Catholic church abortion is mass murder and no different from the crmes mentioned above. Some groups call it a holocaust.
I understand their POV, but I hate that it is so deeply ingrianed in politics.
The whole thing makes me laugh and/or cry because I think making Pro-Life your single issue as a voter leads you to vote for the party that is LEAST in line with the values of the Catholic CHurch and especially Jesus Christ himself.

It was said on the news last night that it was an agreement made before his divorce to Donna Hanover.

It was said on the news last night that it was an agreement made before his divorce to Donna Hanover.
Not totally related, but Donna used to work in my building years ago and was infamous for blowing up the bathroom before she went on air.

I think Cardinal Egan has bigger issues to deal with than whether or not Rudy Guiliani accepted communion from the Pope during his visit.
He should be so concerned about young parishoners deserting the religion or priests molesting little boys.
Just a thought...

I didnt even think about the divorce or the cheating.
I guess the cardinal wanted to refuse him communion bc you can repent for cheating, and getting a divorce.
His pro choice view goes against the beliefs of the church whether he can have an abortion or not.
i guess if you have an abortion, you can atleast "repent" but if you believe in it, then you are going against the beliefs of the church..

so being pro choice (IE allowing each indivudual to decide what to do for themsevles) means that you carry the "sin" of every abortion on you? that cannot be possible.

I don't like abortion, I under almost any circumstance would not get an abortion BUT I will not and cannot judge or put myself in the place of someone that does.
isn't judgment of your fellow man against God as well?

it's better to destroy your family in a REAL and PHYSICAL way through PUBLIC cheating and DIVORCe, but b/c you take the position to let OTHERS decide for themself and let GOD judge...you can't receive communion.

It was also supposed to be because he had multiple divorces and never had them annulled as well as the abortion issue

You're not supposed to. My mother doesn't receive communion for that reason.

yes you are right- but God didn't kill those people, men did- yes, in the name of the Catholic Church and it was wrong. I think you would be hard pressed to find a Catholic Priest or Pope that says that the Crusades were good.
So- why throw the baby out with the bath water. No one is saying that the human leaders of the Church are infallible- they can't be because they are human.
However, as Catholics- there is the respect for life and in Catholic terms- that entails all life.
This is why there is separation of church and state... you can choose what to believe- no one is forcing you to believe anything.

i am just trying to jump into the pysche of the church.
I think its the same as supporting gays. The church is against homosexuality but if i support homosexuality, i am going against the beliefs of the church even though i myself am not gay.
Trust me there are so many contradictions in the catholic church.

My thoughts exactly...the more and more I hear ridiculous statements like Cardinal Egan's - the more I think that I will be converting to another religion once I have children...
He needs to be worrying about his priests molesting children than Rudy's abortion stance...JMHO
