Re: someone riddle me this: Cardinal Egan is upset with Rudy Guiliani for taking communion during the Pope's visit

Every catholic priest I have personally spoken to says the same thing. "if you are repentant and CHANGE your ways then the church will forgive you but if you continue to behave in a way that goes against the teachings of the church you are not a good or practicing catholic.
And this is why we have the Sacrament of Reconcilation.... we are human, we sin. No one is perfect....
But Kevin made a good point, if you continue to sin, that yes, you are not being a "good" Cathoilc. What is the point of me going to Confession or pray and say I did x, y, or z and i continue to do x, y, or z over and over and over again?? Clearly we don't care.... When you make a mistake, you have to learn from it.
The Sacrament of Reconcilation is a gift. to lift us up when we've fallen and to give us God's grace to do the best we can. HOWEVER, if you seriously disagree with the major doctrine of the Church or what they stand for in terms of major issues like abortion, which is based on creed, then i would question your ability to really follow the faith as it is intended.
There are other doctrine in the Church that has been created by man (Vatican II changes, for example) yes, i can see people disagreeing with that, but that doesn't change the TRUTH about what the Church teaches....that is why people have debate on issues like that.
but NO where will you find clergy debating issues such as abortion, the Sacraments, etc. because they are based on the Bible and what the Church believes at its very core. does this make sense?????

I'm not Catholic but I think that is utterly rediculous! it just calls attention to something that doesn't need attention.
and like others have said - they need to focus on bigger problems!

It was said on the news last night that it was an agreement made before his divorce to Donna Hanover.
Not totally related, but Donna used to work in my building years ago and was infamous for blowing up the bathroom before she went on air.

i disagree.... i don't think it's ridiculous. when we continue to have politicians that blatantly go against the teaching and beliefs of the Church while proclaiming themselves as followers of the faith, then it is in the best interest of the Church, in this case, Cardinal Egan to respond.
if the Church doesn't make a statement, than people without a good understanding of the faith believe that according to the Church's teachings and beliefs, it is okay to do what Guiliani (or whomever else it might be) does.

But see I am Catholic, but I have used birth control. And I am supposed to be not catholic anymore? I also love my BIL who is gay and support his right to be in a homosexaul relationships and I pray that he can get married one day.
Does that mean I should renounce my religion. I think it is totally okay and healthy to question your religion and I would be worried if someone just followed it to the letter of the law and NEVER EVER thought about whether or not you totally agree. For the most part I agreee. But on those two topics I don't. I am still catholic.
The stance on Birth control is just not feasible for me in this day and age. I cannot have 17 children. I just can't. We would be homeless.
No, you do not need to renounce your religion. however, you may need to think more critcally about the Church's teaching on the birth control matter. In fact, the Church does not expect couples to parents 17 children. in fact, they promote Natural Family PLanning, which is quite effective in both AVOIDING pregnancy AND PLANNING when practiced correctly. There are several resources available on-line and in books to help you with this issue.
Check out this site:
Natural Family Planning
In addition, your love for BIL and his happiness is not against the Church. in fact, the Church teaches that all men and women are created in God's image, and that includes homosexuals. The only difference is that Church asks that homosexuals to be celibate because they can not marry... yes, that is difficult and an issue that many Catholic homosexuals must face. However, heterosexuals are also supposed to be celibate before marriage, so I am sure most of us have gone against the Church in that regard.
Question your faith, but learn from it. I have and it has strengthened my faith so much.
ETA: I hope I didn't come across as preachy re: your practices and beliefs. I just thought I would share some information that I have found useful.

Just wanted to add that you can be divorced AND still receive communion, even if you haven't gotten an annulment. However, if you remarried without the annulment, you cannot receive. For that reason, he should not have received.
I was divorced and without an annulment for a while and I still received communion. I had checked it out first with the priest and this is what I was told. Divorce is not a sin as it is not recognized by the church. The church recognizes the annulment which is why you cannot remarry in the church without one.

Exactly. The divorce doesn't do anything. It's if you're remarried without an anullment, because you're still married in the eyes of the church to the first spouse, so you're commiting adultery.

I'm not saying that he couldn't say something to Guiliani in private about it. but why make it known to the public?
furthermore, Guiliani is divorced and that is an abomomination to the Catholic church, right? so why couldn't he take communion only b/c he is pro-choice? it just doesn't make sense that he would choose the pro-choice issue over being divorced. I am sure there are plenty of Catholics who are pro-choice. but they don't make it public knowledge b/c they're not politicians.
