Will you be going for serial HCG levels? I think at this stage it's the best way to determine if you have a viable pregnancy. Also once you do get this straightened out regardless of the outcome I would fine a new OB practice to go to. No one should have to go through this kind of torment. I had a very similar experience and i have to tell you after what I went through I am NOT having a sono at 6 weeks for my next pregnancy b/c of what happened....

I went in at 6 weeks (or what I thought was 6 weeks) and I was told I had a blighted ovum (sac but no baby)...when I explained to the doctor that I have long cycles and I may be earlier than I thought...he didnt want to listen to me...he went so far as to schedule a D & C the following week....I demanded another sono a few days later before the D & C and sure enough there was my baby peanut's heart pumping away!!!

Bottom line...the doctors who refuse to see their patients before 8 weeks do it for a very smart reason....to avoid the heartache and stress that both of us have experienced...at 8 weeks there's no question you will see a baby....at 5,6 or 7 weeks..its really up in the air when your baby decides to make his appearance on the sono screen!!

Please wait it out another week and demand another sono....chances are your dates are off and everything will turn out fine!!! My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family...I know exactly what youre going through...feel free to FM me if you have any questions..I'm here!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Update 2/19:
Hi Girls - Thanks so much for all your help the last few days. I did go for my bloodwork this morning which is being expedited so hopefully by this afternoon or tomorrow morning I'll know what my numbers are.
The dr office called me to see how i was doing and to schedule an appointment for me to come in and discuss a D&C with the dr. I refused, because a M/C has not yet been my official medical diagnosis. It was the opinion of a sono tech. If it is a M/C, I'll cross that bridge when i come to it, but I'm not jumping the gun just yet. Call me a naive optimist...Chat Icon
I asked the nurse and she confirmed that the original diagnosis of M/C on Saturday was based solely upon the notion that the sono tech did not see a heartbeat at 6w4d and "by then it's usually there". I said, "but not always..."
She will call me today or tomorrow to let me know the results of my bloodwork. She said i may need to go again, and i also found out it would be about $200 fee for me to do a sono in the office (b/c of my ridiculous insurance problem). DH and i will gladly do that next week should the blood come back OK.
Thank you again, girls. Chat Icon Chat Icon I'll keep you posted!!

I'm so glad that they are expediting your bloodwork! I pray that there is good news for you! Sounds to me as though you need to find a new OB!! Any doctor that would take an opinion of a sono tech and have his nurse call you to schedule a D&C is negligent!!! I am so glad that you and your hubby have things under control, doing what's best for you and the baby!! Sending you lots of hugs and prayers!! Re: Updated: It's been a long weekend...sorry long story

I hope you get great news!! I highly suggest you get a new Dr. !!! Being in the medical profession myself I find it HIGHLY unprofessional and irresponsible for them to diagnose you at 6W4d with a M/C because no HB has been found based solely on a sonogram reading. They should hae immediately sne tyou for HCG levels and they should be doing a repeat sonogram a week later before they even MENTIONED a D/C!!!

OMG I am so mad for you. What complete BS!!!! Wait for your numbers and then go for another sono....its sad that something so important is rashly decided upon by your medical office.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with you - the heartbeat does not always show at 6w. And a lot of girls on here can tell you the same thing , because they went through it, then went back to the doctor a couple of days/weeks later and there was a heartbeat!

Re: Updated: It's been a long weekend...sorry long story

Do you have longer cycles? I had something similar happen to me because I thought I was 7 weeks and I was only 5 weeks 6 days due to my cycles being longer. So when I went they only saw the sac. But my doctor had me wait until week 8 to get another sono.

Honestly I don't understand these doctors that even say miscarriage at this point. You are still too early to see a heartbeat which is why most doctors won't see patients until they are in their 7th week. Please do not lose hope yet. Let us know what happens when you hear anything.

I would have done the same thing you did! Chat Icon
I pray you get good news!!

when I went for my first sono with my DD it wasnt until the last second the tech was about to give up- my uterus is tilted and finally she saw the sac and the heartbeat. she said I was just 6 weeks and that if I had come a day or two earlier they wouldnt have been able to see anything!

so it is very possibe you are not as far along as they think.

edited to say this time around they arent seeing me until my 7th week

2/20 UPDATE:
They got my beta # back = 37,399. Nurse said with a number that high they should have seen something on the monitor so she's still convinced i had m/c and wants me to come in to talk D&C. I've made an appointment for tomorrow with my regular OB (not the idiot i saw on saturday) and she sent me a lab slip for one more vial of blood for tomorrow morning. she said (and i quote) "we'll follow you until your levels get back down to normal". Thanks for the optimism and encouragement, lady! At no point did she make mention of the idea that my pregnancy could still be OK. Let me ask you - according to them i miscarried this pregnancy 1 week ago today. Would my numbers still be so high? Am i being naive in thinking there's still hope? Thank you, girls!

------------------------------
No, you're not naive! I've just sent you FM with my HCG levels from week 6 of my PG (which my drs thought were my week 8 levels). Your number is WAY higher than my week 6 number...I can't believe they're not pulling you in for a sono at this point, I understand they want to see the "relative" numbers and determine if it's going up or down but at least they should entertain the idea that they could be going up. UGH. Suffolk OB should be shut down for this. The angst!
