3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I was always under the belief - not that I'm a mom or anything but my sisters each have 2 kids - that you really don't expose your newborn to germ-infested areas like restaurants, malls, etc....you wait about 3 months, no?
Well I was behind a woman in line that had the teeniest little infant ever...I was so surprised to see a newborn in a public place. I asked the woman how old her baby was- three days old!!!
Not judging or anything but wow...I was beyond shocked. Am I alone here? Is it really necessary to keep your newborn at home until about 3 months? My friend recently had a baby and left hers at home so she could go to a party. I expected she would do that!
Thoughts?

I've taken my newborn out and about since day 1.
I'm certainly not staying cooped up in my house for 3 months! I would go stir crazy!
As long as you don't pass the baby around and let people touch the baby... it's fine. At least, that's my opinion.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
We were very cautious, we kept DD out of public places for close to 12 weeks. Our ped suggested it, and since it was summer, we did plenty of walking outside, etc., so it wasn't like we were cooped up in the house.
But, I know a lot of people get out right away. Depends on each parent's comfort level, and I know sometimes there's no other option but to go out (I'd imagine with a 2nd child it would be even harder to stay home for weeks upon weeks, since the older child would need to be entertained, etc).

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I think most doctors say 6 or 8 weeks. But in reality sometimes you can't wait that long. Especially when you have other kids it is not practical. I had to take DS into Walmart when he was 3 or 4 weeks old. I had to get something and there was no one I could leave him with. I tried to stay away from everyone. He turned out fine.

That's the other thing I thought- a mom would HAVE to get out!
Thanks all- I was wondering if my prior 'belief' was dated!

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
Stay at home for 3 months, that's insane!
We have been taking DD out since she was 8 days old. She was in her infant carseat without people touching her. My ped never even suggested that would she keep her home for any given period of time.

I agree. Who would stay home for 3 months?

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I had a c-section and could barely move around at 3 days so I def wasn't thinking about going to the stores, but I did take her out as soon as I could drive (my OB said 2 weeks after the c-section). I just made sure no one touched her. There was no way I could sit in the house all day and not go somewhere.

That is what I did too but I also had a spring and summer baby. If I had a winter baby I probably would have waited 4 weeks.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I would never, but I also have somewhat of a support system to either go to the store or watch baby while I go.
Maybe she did not have anyone?

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I took DS out of Christmas to my ILs at 5 days old...We started going to stores at about 10 days old...
There is no way I would have kept my sanity if I stayed indoors for 3 months.....
ETA: My ped gave me the green light to take DS out at 5 days old, she said go, just dont let strangers touch him, keep him away from people you know are sick, etc. I have a lot of people I could have left him with but honestly I didnt see the need to leave him just to run a few quick errands.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
At the advise of all our peds and nurses, we did not go in any stores with DS until he was 8 weeks. If a child under 8 weeks old is sick and has a fever of 100.4 and above, they go directly to the ER witha spinal tap.
I did not stay in my house. There are other options to still go out. I went for a walk everyday with DS from the time he was 2.5 weeks. I had a c-section and it took me that long to feel like it anyway. We went to the park, outdoor BBQs, picnics, (he stayed away from everyone), etc... so I am not sure why people think unless you go to a store you are stuck at home. I never felt like I was stuck.

Just to clarify, I really wasn't judging - I just had a belief system and was wondering if I was wrong. And you've all cleared that up for me- thanks!

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I went for walks at a week and we got the go ahead at 2-3 weeks to take her out. We hit dinner for my sisters bday and Babiesrus...I needed to get out.
She also was at a rehearsal dinner and a morning after b-fast by 2 months.
