Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
As someone who's daughter had a spinal tap because of a fever at 2 weeks old, I wouldn't do it. However I have a lot of people that would visit & pick things up for me if I needed.
My friend had to take her baby home on a plane at 4 days old. She adopted her from Utah. She not only got plenty of looks but comments too.
While you never know someone's situation, I could see why you'd think it was strange. I saw a baby in Yankee stadium that was 10 days old. I'll admit that I judged.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I took her out at a week old, Target was her first big trip! I had no choice, needed things, single parent, no babysitters, yada yada yada She did go to the doctor's the day after she came home, where I'm sure she came in contact with more germs in that office than being in her carrier at the store.

I'm glad you brought that up- I was wondering how soon I could bring our baby to Yankee Stadium! DH reminds me (oh the man with priorities)- if we have a baby by next summer- I'll miss most of the season in the new stadium! We have a Saturday ticket package so I pretty much figured I'd miss most of the games! I also wonder how far along I could be while still being somewhat comfortable in the bleachers!
I remember my sister bringing my nephew to a restaurant just a couple weeks shy of 3 months and he got a fever and had to go to the hospital- he was the 'first' so we were all beside ourselves. We went out for my birthday so I especially felt guilty!

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
Yeah, I would have taken my 3 day old baby out, but I was way too busy sitting on the couch crying.
With my next baby I will be up and out right away, all being well.
eta..I had a normal vaginal birth and I felt pretty darn good about 3-4 days post partum, I would have been happy to go out and run errands, however the crying on the sofa in my pajamas stopped me from doing so.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
Cailen was out at 1 week old. There was no way I would have been able to stay home with him until 3 mts - he was in daycare at 2 mts old. He was in stores and restaraunts at 2 weeks old. Hell, I had to haul his little infant carrier to the post office on tax day - he was 11 days old!!!!
DH was gone 12 hours a day. I had no help. Staying in was not an option for me....

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I was at BRU the day after I left the hospital with dd bc everyone told me I didnt need newborn clothes and to start out with 0-3 months. Boy were they wrong. I needed to get the necessities for her and we had a drs appt anyway. This was in November and I did it. To tell you the truth being that its summer, I give the mom all the credit in the world to want to get out. Its so nice out, why not.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I took DS to Waldbaums with me at 6 days old. DH was at work, my parents and in laws were both not around, and I needed to pick up a few groceries. So, off we went, and I did get some stares, but he was fine. There is no right or wrong time, it's when you feel comfortable.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
My ped said no crowded places until 12 weeks. At 6-8 he said okay to going early to the mall before crowds, or stores for quick things or a restaurant if no one was on top of (he said 3 feet) her and she was in her seat with the cover up. He said it is b.c the standard of care is a spinal tap if a child under 12 weeks gets a fever.
I took DD out for walks everyday as soon as I got home so I wasn't cooped up - just didn't take her shopping.
I had a summer baby I know my ped told my friend who had a winter baby NO public places at all until 12 weeks.
Everyone has a different comfort level.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I had them out from the moment we came home from the hospital. We actually stopped in IKEA on our way home when we came home with Andrew.
I see nothing wrong with it. More power to that lady for being 3 days pp and being out!

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
As the Ped. recommended we stayed out of busy places for 8 weeks. I had a C Section and the healing went quick, but, was def. NOT in the mood to be out just after 3 days..
I would go to my parents house, or, they would stop here. I had friends stopping by off and on as well.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
I was released from the hospital at 24 hours with dd and we went out to lunch and a few stores on the way home. I had DD out with DS at stores 1 week post partum because Dh was away already he came home for her birth and very little time after. I had no choice. Heck, I had her at DS's preschool just couldn't leave her at home or in the car alone.
Maybe the baby was smaller because it came earlier then expected and she needed a few things. Or heck at 3 days she may have been picking up breast pads, hemmroid pads, maxi pads... it's the stuff no one thinks about and no one talks about...! lol

I've taken my newborn out and about since day 1.
I'm certainly not staying cooped up in my house for 3 months! I would go stir crazy!
As long as you don't pass the baby around and let people touch the baby... it's fine. At least, that's my opinion.
ITA! all 3 of my babies were out and about from day 2! My kids have never got sick from it either.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
We did not take DS into crowded stores until 8 weeks. This was at the advice of both the pediatrician we saw at the hospital, and our ped. at home.
I did go out with DS, just not into crowded places like WalMart. We took him in the car, for walks, and to our local bagel shop at off hours. He was also born in winter, so I was being cautious.
Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to expose such a young baby to that much, though people will disagree.

We were out and about at a week. I couldn't give up shopping for that long
It's fine- there is no way I could stay in regardless of the season!

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
My cousin's wife took their son to the supermarket the day they came home from the hospital and he was a winter baby and there was snow on the ground.
I waited about two weeks.
While I don't think we should wait 8-10 weeks, I think 2 or 3 days is kind of crazy. If we gave birth when our moms did, we wouldn't even be home until 4 days later.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!
As others have said, she could have been on the way home form the hospital and realized she didn't have the essentials that she needed at home.

I had my dd at the supermaket with us at 7 days old....
I did too- funny, it didn't occur to me to stay home. Though I would not have done it at a busy time- it was a weekday morning and almost empty.

I was thinking more about this. It's possible she had no one with whom to leave the baby and needed these necessities.

I was still in the hospital recovering from my c-section when DD was 3 days old!
Personally, *I* would not take my 3-day old out to a store, but as others have said, you don't know the mother's situation.

I went outside with DD when she was a few days old and she went in the car etc when DH had to drive me to the Dr. but we avoided stores etc with her until she was several weeks old.
