I waited 8 wks with my second but ony 7.5 wks with my first. My first got a fever just before 8 wks and got a spinal so I would never do that again.

I don't know if people are aware that if a baby gets a temp over 1oo.4 before they are 2 months old they get a spinal...that's a given. Maybe more people need to be made aware of this. People seem to take it so lightly, but a spinal is an aweful experience with a risk of infection.

If a child under 8 weeks old is sick and has a fever of 100.4 and above, they go directly to the ER witha spinal tap.

.

I always thought this too but my nephew had a fever at 4 weeks and he did NOT need a spinal tap, thank god Chat Icon

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I would never take my baby out at 3 weeks old, if the child gets sick it has to go right to the hospital, I wouldn't take that chance. My DD didn't go to the mall or any place like that till she was 3 months old. I took my kids out for walks right away, but thats it.

I've taken my newborn out and about since day 1.

I'm certainly not staying cooped up in my house for 3 months! Chat Icon I would go stir crazy!

As long as you don't pass the baby around and let people touch the baby... it's fine. At least, that's my opinion. Chat Icon

ITA (although I went for walks etc not to Walmart) i can understand the need to get out

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

It's interesting to see such different mom opinions AND ped. advice! My ped. never told me to stay home at all with DD. I had a c-section so I wasn't going shopping and lugging that infant carrier in and out of the car by myself for several weeks. But when DH was home, we were out at a store or two and the bagel store at about 2 weeks. Summer baby here too. I would never consider staying out of stores for three full months with a well baby.

When my DS was three days old I was still in the hospital! Chat Icon

I didn't take him out to stores for about two weeks. I couldn't drive anyway from the section so it wasn't a big deal - once I got the ok from the Dr. we were out and about!

I guess it depends on your doctor then, but according to my first group of 4 pediatricians and my present single practitioner, it is a given. My son had 100.4the day before he turned two months and had a spinal.Chat Icon

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I waited until 8 weeks to take DD to the mall (per doctors sugggestion), but if I HAD to go somewhere I would have definitely gone. Maybe she needed to buy baby things. Maybe she has no help at home. Maybe she just needed to get out and didnt have anyone to watch the baby. Who cares? It's a personal decision that shouldn't be judged.

I took steven food shopping with me on the way home from the hospital.

Don't judge people - it's really not that shocking, so I don't get that. Once you leave the hospital, even if you only go to your car, you have exposed your child to an unsanitary environment.

She did go to the doctor's the day after she came home, where I'm sure she came in contact with more germs in that office than being in her carrier at the store.

Exactly!!! Steven went to the doctor the day after he come home from the hospital. He was more at risk getting sick there, IMO.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

We did not take DD out into the stores for the full 3 months.

We went to visit family and had family visit us. But we stuck to the rule.

Our reason was this: DD was premature and in the NICU for 5 weeks. During that time, the nurses DRILLED into our heads if she gets sick, she will wind up back in the hospital. A fever for a small baby can be very serious and we didn't want her back in the hospital.

As for what others do, I simply don't get it. Maybe she had no choice, but I would not take a child out at that age.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I don't think I had the energy to go out of the house with a 3 day old baby.

Walmart would be the last place I would have gone too.

I guess it depends on the time of year you have the baby. I had my son in the summer so I was out within the week.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

Thinking back, DS had a high fever when he was around 3 weeks old. We had flown from NC to NY to find a place to live, so leaving him behind wasn't an option. I'm sure he got sick from the puddle jumper plane. He never had to get a spinal tap though, thank god!

I was hospitalized longer than DS so my poor DH had to take him to Walmart and the grocery store when he was less than a week old.

We went out right away and will with this one. My Dr. never told me to stay inside and if he did I wouldn't have listened. 8 weeks plus to me is extreme. JMO.

Chat Icon Stay at home for 3 months, that's insane!

We have been taking DD out since she was 8 days old. She was in her infant carseat without people touching her. My ped never even suggested that would she keep her home for any given period of time.

I dont think its insane to follow your drs. orders. My DD was born in December and the dr. said not to take her into public places until she was 2-3 months old due to flu season. We went to my moms house, but that was it. There was no need to take her into a store. I did not go crazy because I knew I was doing the best that I could for my daughter. Of course, I was very excited when it hit 60 degrees one day in January and I could take her for a walk though.

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but that's me. I stayed in the car with my week-old DD when we had to run to Babies R Us on the way home from the pediatrician. She did go to a restaurant at 2 weeks old, but it was at off-hours and there was no one else in there.

My cousin was at Wal-Mart with her DD the day they were discharged from the hospital. In her defense, she probably went then because it was across the street from the hospital and they lived 40 minutes away.

Well I had a C/S so we were in the hospital for 4 days, but people visited there, at home and we were out within the week. My Dr. put no restrictions on us, except for driving.

do you know what kind of germs you pick up even in a hospital? Chat Icon

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I took DD to my cousins house for Thanksgiving when she was 8 days old. IMO I don't see the big deal...as long as you are not letting people touch the baby or pass the baby around like a hot potato. I also think it depends on the season...winter and Flu season I would definitely be more hesitant. If I had to stay home for 3 months I would go insane.

We avoided public places until 6 weeks. I took him outside for a walk after a week.
