I would never, but I also have somewhat of a support system to either go to the store or watch baby while I go.

I've taken my newborn out and about since day 1.

I'm certainly not staying cooped up in my house for 3 months! Chat Icon I would go stir crazy!

As long as you don't pass the baby around and let people touch the baby... it's fine. At least, that's my opinion. Chat Icon

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I was going crazy after a week in the house. DD was 3 days old when she came home. We went out 2 days later to the ped, and then the following week after her second ped appointment my mom and I took her to children's place and then we went to eat pizza.

I gave birth in January - it's depressing enough as it is without post-pardum hormones being so cold and gray. There's no way I could have stayed inside for 3 months.

The twins were out at 5 days old. They were in their infant car seats with the netting over them. I also didn't let anyone touch them!

We kept our DD out of public places for about 8wks...then we would go out but not to the mall until she was alittle bit older.

I don't know if people are aware that if a baby gets a temp over 1oo.4 before they are 2 months old they get a spinal...that's a given. Maybe more people need to be made aware of this. People seem to take it so lightly, but a spinal is an aweful experience with a risk of infection.

This was not the case for my nephew...I know it DOES happen but it is not a given Chat Icon Chat Icon

I guess it depends on your doctor then, but according to my first group of 4 pediatricians and my present single practitioner, it is a given. My son had 100.4the day before he turned two months and had a spinal.Chat Icon

All the peds of our practice told us that. The nurses at Winthrop told us that. The ped at the orientation tour at Winthrop told us that. One ped from a BRU seminar told us that.

That was enough for me to not take the chance and go to the mall.

We still went out. Just not to stores.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

I had zero problem taking my son out right away. I had family here to help out as well, but we still took him with us to target on maybe day 3 to buy some stuff...

I feel as long as your baby is covered up and strangers aren't passing him/her around it should be ok. But that is just me, and I can understand others waiting.

I took both my children out within the first few weeks of being home. I don't have anyone to help out and watch the kids so if they wanted to eat, we had to go grocery shopping. Plus, when DS was born, I had a 20 month old. Can you imagine what it would be like to keep a 20 month old cooped up for 2 months?

To me, as long as no one is breathing over the baby and touching the hands and face - I don't see what is so different then having people visit you at home or the first few days of life at the hospital.

Re: 3-day old baby in a Wal-Mart?!

The day after my son came home we went to a bon voyage party for our cousin who was deploying to Iraq. Our doctor said it's a personal choice. We would take him to malls and all of that and he never once got sick. It's really a personal choice. It use to be you shouldn't take the baby out until their christened. But that was in the 50's. we only went to my mom's or my MIL's house...if we had to go to germ infested places, i had someone watch him! This was actually my dr's advice! She said wait til they are at least 2 months...she said that's bc if they get a fever before 2 months old, they have to go to a hospital!!
