Spin-off to abortion posts....What's the alternative?
So, I'm aware that the alternatives to women having abortions are adoption and raising the baby themselves, but let's face it, when abortion was illegal in this country, women went to horrible lengths to terminate their pregnancies, anyway. I won't go into detail, as I'm sure we all know the history. But I'm just curious for those of you who want abortion to be illegal, how would you feel knowing that many girls would die trying to terminate their pregnancies or would be using back alley drs.? I'm just curious how everyone feels about that. And I truly am interested in hearing what you have to say, so please know I am not posting this to flame anyone, and I surely hope no one else will, either.

Great question, I am curious too because IMO if Roe V Wade ever gets overturned in no way will it mean that abortions will cease to happen.

Well, that's exactly why I'm asking. I'd rather see it legal and done safely than illegal and done in horrific ways. But that's coming from me, a very strong pro-choice person. So I'm really just interested to hear what others have to say.

I would like to know as well.
And as great as adoption sounds as an option, my view on THAT changed so much as I became a mother, I can't see someone giving up a baby that they inevitably become attached to
Sorry for the ramble, I am really curious tho.

Re: Spin-off to abortion posts....What's the alternative?
I am a pro-choice person but don't agree on abortion per se. I don't believe in abortion past a certain time. But again, I will never be in anyone else shoes.
I still believe it is in the end each woman' choice.
That being said, and I won't generalize to all pro-life people, I feel some of them are just keeping their head in the sand not in touch with the harsh reality you pictured.

I am totally PRO Life and I would hope that it would be a deterrant for females. Just like DUI, don;t want to kill yourself or someone else, or get arrested? Then don't drive OR come up with an alternative. We need to take responsibility for our actions and not given an "easy out" to deal with poor decision making.

Why do pro life people say abortion is the easy way out? You're the second person on these boards to use that term. I really don't think most women who have had an abortion looked at it as an easy way out. I'm sure it was an heart wrenching, life altering decision for them to make.

I don't think that abortion is the "easy way out" per se, however, I agree that the alternative would be to suck it up and take responsibility for the life you created and if you're not willing to do that, then you have no right having s*x.

You're right, it must be a tough decision to make, but keeping the child takes on much more responsibility, and is FAR more life altering.

I'm prochoice, but this is just in response to this statement. I'm SURE that there are women out there that it such a difficult decision, etc... but, when i did some work in that area, i can't even tell you how many women there had multiple (meaning FOUR, 5,6) abortions. It was a form of birth control for them. I'm not getting into my feelings about it, but there are definitely ALOT of women out there that can stand to be deterred from abortion. (again, i'm not saying this as a sweeping generalization, but to those that it applies to).

Re: Spin-off to abortion posts....What's the alternative?
Ok, but you're assuming now that all pregnancies are the result of carelessness on the woman's part? What about the girl who is raped by her father and finds out she's pregnant? It happens all the time. My cousin was repeatedly raped by her father, thank god she never found herself in this position, but I just think that there are so many girls that would rather turn to abortion and rightfully so than birth their father or rapist's baby. Also, I became pregnant with Ava while using birth control. Granted we were married and all for having her, but what if we WERE being careful, but couldn't care for a baby financially or for other reasons? Why should I be forced to have a baby that I cannot afford?
My point is, there's other ways women become pregnant besides just carelessness. So that aside, if abortion was illegal, many of those women would be desperate enough to take drastic measures like terminating their own pregnancy or going to an illegal, back alley dr. That scares the crap out of me.

Ok, I will say that I believe in special circumstances (rape/incest/life in danger) but not after 10 weeks.

And yet, people have sex & get pregnant all of the time. Teenagers are probably the most irresponsible with that notion of "that won't happen to me."
What do you do with those girls? I feel like those will be the most to suffer from the back alley/homemade abortions. It's not going to be the people with money to fly out of the country or to another state to have one. Right now in the US, states are putting limitations on abortions. As I mentioned, NY no longer does 3rd trimester abortions - even for quality of life issues.
What is the alternative?

foster care and adoption. I have placed 3 pregnant girls in mother-child homes in the past 3 weeks and they plan to give up their child for adoption.

Re: Spin-off to abortion posts....What's the alternative?
I don't like to post on this type of topics because of the drama but I am a pro-lifer. I do not impose my position on anyone but my position is that the alternative is adoption. If you can't raise a child then there are a million people in the world who can't have one who would love to raise him/her. Again, this is my personal opinion so please no flames. I will admit, I would hate to see what lengths people will go to to terminate a pregnancy if abortion was not an option. I can say that the reason I became pro-life is because I have seen too many people use abortion as a method of birth control. I am not stupid, I know that this isn't always the case but I just wish that it never was. I do think there are legitimate reasons why people would want to abort but there are too many people that use it as birth control. JMHO

I DO see making abortion illegal as a deterrant. Will some women STILL go to lengths to get abortions ANYWAY? Yes, I know they will and I understand it is a horrible reality BUT I feel that making abortion illegal WILL make MORE women choose to better protect themselves against pregnancy AND choose alternatives IF they do become pregnant anyway.

I'm trying to understand your post, but i'm just reading it as- the alternative of giving a child up for adoption is worse than killing it in utero. I don't understand?

What about women who don't choose to have sex? Like women who are raped? Women get raped by men they know and/or don't know all the time. What if your husband abuses you and you do NOT want to bring a child into that kind of life, but he rapes you every night and you end up pregnant? Should that woman be forced to have that child?
