Hate is a pretty strong emotion. Out of curiosity, do you think a celebrity should never speak about his/her political opinions? Even when directly asked? Or should they just lend their "celebrity" to good causes (i.e. Darfur, Stand Up to Cancer, rebuilding New Orleans) and shut up?

Yes. If celebrities state who they are voting for and go on and on about nonsense, then some crazy people will vote that way just because they are.
I think they should keep their political views to themselves.
Look at what happened with Oprah!

Re: Matt Damon on Sarah Palin
Of course the pick was political...WHAT PICK OF A VP IS NOT POLITICAL???? Hello?
That doesn't mean she wouldn't do a great job.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as he is, but I think celebrities have to be a little more careful b/c of the influence they could have.

I understand what you mean but I don't agree. I don't think a person who listens to just what celebrities say is going to actually get up off the couch and go vote come that Tuesday in November. I do think if someone likes a particular celebrity and that celebrity endorses someone, you might get interested in that candidate enough to check them out and see if that's a candidate you would like.
Just because they're celebrities doesn't mean they give up the right to speak their opinions.
I can think of one actor whose political opinions the nation was so thrilled with that he was voted into the highest office...twice!
As far as the Oprah thing, she talked to Barack way before he had the democrat nomination. She has not put him on since then. She has no obligation to put on McCain/Palin. Hers is not a news show.

Re: Matt Damon on Sarah Palin
Go Matt! I completely agree with him and applaud him for speaking out. Just because he is a celebrity doesn't mean he can't speak about politics.
Sarah Palin IS a frightening figure- so close to the presidency, yet NO experience other than mayor of a rinky dink Alaskan town and only 1.5 years experience being governor of a state with 670,000 people (just for reference, Suffolk county alone has 1.5 million residents). Not to mention with her in office, our kids might really be taught creationism in school with no sex education. It IS absurd.

He's JOKING, right? Please tell me he's joking! He can't be serious! I'm cracking up!
Her experience as a mayor and a governor are not enough for VICE president...then I wonder what he has to say about Barack Obama, who has LESS experience and wants to be PRESIDENT!
He's so "scared" because of some rumors about dinosaurs 4000 years ago and crap about book banning (neither of which are true - people MADE THEM UP!). That's much scarier than knowing Barack Obama associates with racist, anti-american radical preachers, unrepentant domestic terrorists and a slum-lord political fixer!

Re: Matt Damon on Sarah Palin
Personally, I feel like he's totally entitled to his opinion, but I blame society for caring so much about what a good looking actor says and giving him so much money and such a big platform. Of course he feels like the world's waiting with baited breath; it is! Certainly, he makes good points, but there are so many high school history teachers and community activists and and students and foreign service employees with degrees in international relations who will never have the cache, the platform, the money, or the sway that he does because we as a society decided to make good looking actors our compasses. He's bright and he's certainly done nothing wrong, but look how this country's screwed up values have taken those with the most knowledge, the highest work ethic, and the best minds and given them the least respect, resources, and influence. Our fault--not Matt's!

Well the difference there is that Obama was ELECTED as the Democratic Candidate by (I think) 18 million people. Sarah Palin was chosen by one 72 year old man with a repetitive history of cancer.

H ell to the yes! And there is no reason that an actor or anyone should keep there opinion to themselves and "stick" to what they do. If that is the case then none of us should be talking about politics.

I'm sorry to turn this discussion political on the celebrity board, but I have to respond to this, because you are wrong. Obama has more experience than Palin. He is a Harvard law school graduate. He served as an Illinois state senator from 1996 to 2004. In 2004, he was elected US senator. Therefore, he has 12 years in public office. He has also been a community, voter rights and youth leadership activist for years.
Sarah on the other hand, graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in communications-journalism. She was mayor of a small Alaskan town of 7000 people from 1996 to 2002 (come on, mayor doesn't compare to State Senator!). She was not in public office from 2002 - 2006, instead she worked for a commission involved with oil and gas drilling in Alaska. Then she was elected governor in 2006. Therefore, she only has 8 years in public office.
About the book banning, Wikipedia gives a nice description of the controversy and it's not as simple as it isn't true: "According to Emmons [the librarian], she and Palin twice discussed the question of library censorship: first in early October, then in detail on October 28 [1996]. Emmons stated Palin asked her if she would object to censorship, and Emmons replied "it would not be just me ... the American Civil Liberties Union would get involved, too." Palin raised the possibility of people circling the library in protest, to which Emmons replied "it would definitely be a problem the ACLU would take on then." In early December, Palin spoke publicly about the issue, using it as an example of a discussion she'd had with her department heads, and stated, "many issues were discussed, both rhetorical and realistic in nature." She added that censorship "was discussed in the context of a professional question being asked in regards to library policy" and that she did not have a specific list of books in mind. No books were removed from the library. Palin gave signed letters to Emmons and Stambaugh on January 30, 1997, that stated: "I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment..."

to this point, if you do research on the mayors and the "government" of Wasilla Tx pre Palin....it will give you an idea of what her "responsibilities" trials and tribulations really are.
you don't take a guy from the mail room of a company and make him CEO because he know the layout of the floors really well.
same thing here.
I think it's funny how people get so mad and tell others to STIFLE when they bring up LEGITIMATE fears.
assuage them INSTEAD of brushing them under the rug. enough with the censorship ish!

I don't think where anyone goes to college makes them a more eligible candidate. My sister went to Hofstra Law, a 2nd tier law school, got a fluke interview with one of the most elite law firms that only usually interviews ivy law grads..and she got the job.
And he only had 4 more years political experience than she does...does that mean him more qualified to be President??

Actually, I totally agree with you. I am voting for Obama because I think he'd make an outstanding statesman, voice for our country and I agree with his policies, not because he went to Harvard or because he has four more years of experience. I am especially voting for him because I so strongly disagree with McCain/Palin's policies.
I posted the information to refute the incorrect information that Sarah has more experience than Obama. That is simply untrue and misleading, yet it seems like some people just aren't interested in the facts.
