Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....

This morning it game out that she has 6 other children and went through IVF and had 8 embroys implanted and all 8 took. Does anyone else find this very, very troubling? Why in the world if you have 6 kids would you implant yourself with 8 (8!!!) embroys?? I don't understand that thinking at all and I find it disturbing that a doctor would do that.

Don't get me wrong the story is amazing since all 8 of them seem to be doing well, but she is very, very lucky that they are doing so well. And how in the world can she support 14 children? They mentioned her husband is a contractor going back to Iraq shortly too. I just don't get what this woman was thinking and I just cannot understand how a doctor, knowing her situation would implant her with so many possible babies. Much less any woman with that many possible babies.

I am just disgusted by everything I heard this morning and wanted to get some views here.

I don't think she implanted that many to have all *take*

Many times, they don't all implant. Whether or not to terminate the embryos (if they implanted) I think would be a difficult an excruciating decision.... you know?

I know I totally butchered the IVF terminology..

Yes I understand what you are saying, but I have had friends go through this and they implanted only as many as they thought they could handle. I think 8 is very irresponsible for both the woman and doctor....especially in light of the fact that she already had 6 kids!

I don't think how many kids she already had makes a difference. People are free to have as many children as they want.

Had she been on welfare, with 6 kids and gunning for a few more, I can understand that logic.

I don't think any doctor would "put back" 8 embryos when she has 6 other kids at home.

She probably did IUI if anything.

Doctor's usually only "transfer" more than 2 or 3 when you have never been successful before, or are on the older side. Since she has 6 kids- unless they are all adopted- she has obviously been successful.

Some news reports are saying that it's her father that is going to Iraq and that she is a single mother.

JUst a pet peeve here...

Embryos are "put back"...implant is what you *hope* will happen

and putting back 8 embryos is extremely irresponsible

My RE will put back, at max, 6 embryos and only b/c I am 41 and have had multiple failed IVF's

I have friends currently going through IVF and 8 embryos has never been an option for any of them.

I am very surprised a doctor would be willing to risk this.

And yes, I find it irresponsible.

I have to fight my RE to put back 3 instead of 2Chat Icon Doesnt sound like IVF to me, sounds more like medicated IUI. However, either from the doctor standpoint or the woman's standpoint, it is completely irrisponsible.

The IVF information came from the Grandmother of the kids. So I would say that is pretty accurate. And I think there are a number of doctors who do this. I remember a New York Magazine article about this becoming very commen in the city and that there were doctors even specializing in selective reduction if the woman got pregnant with more then she wanted. I think that is medically unethical.

That they didn't say in the article, but I thought the same thing about having 6 kids already.

Yes, that is unethical... but just because the grandmother said it was IVF she still could have been mistaken. I know my family gets my IUI's and my IVFs confused as well. I have to remind them that it was IVF that got me pregnant, not IUI.

Obviously with 6 other kids, she's been successful with other treatments, and I find it very irresposible of her and her Dr. to transfer (NOT implant!) 8 embryos.

And does she in fact have a DH/BF or is it her father that is a contractor in Iraq. Each news department is giving different details.

Fox News has the grandmother saying that 8 eggs were "implanted": "Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined."

I know this woman hasn't come out in public yet but do you think there's a possibility she's shooting for her own tv show, given the success of "Jon & Kate + 8" and the "18, 19 & Counting" (whatever # they are at now..)?

Is there going to be a flood of multiples because people want to cash in on TLC shows?

Before they speak they really need to get their terminolgoy correct! Like LisaW said... they do not implant embryos... implanting is what you HOPE happens. They TRANSFER the embryos. Another thing I always correct my family on when they would ask how many embryos the Dr. "implanted" in me....Chat Icon

I do hope the facts of this story come out soon because I'm finding it hard to swallow that a women with a 7yr old, 6yr old, 5yr old, 3yr old and 2yr old twins has that much difficulty getting pg that she needed 8 embryos crammed into her uterus.Chat Icon

I watch Jon and Kate plus 8 and I think that show is successful actually because of the personalities of Jon and Kate. Just my take on the matter....I find them to be a perfect fit.

I can't imagine there would be more demand for more shows of mega multiples. How many times can you watch something along those lines. I think Jon and Kate are the staple. JMO.

Can I ask you what IUI is? I know that is how Kate (of JOn and Kate plus 8) got pregnant and I don't understand how so many multiples can result from that.

I agree 100%
You already have 6 children at home .........WHY would you go through a very expensive, specific MEDICAL procedure to have even ONE more child? Particularly when the chance of having multiples is so high ???

And IMO this Doctor is a quack -
