And does she in fact have a DH/BF or is it her father that is a contractor in Iraq. Each news department is giving different details.

Fox News has the grandmother saying that 8 eggs were "implanted": "Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined."

Before they speak they really need to get their terminolgoy correct! Like LisaW said... they do not implant embryos... implanting is what you HOPE happens. They TRANSFER the embryos. Another thing I always correct my family on when they would ask how many embryos the Dr. "implanted" in me....Chat Icon

Can I ask you what IUI is? I know that is how Kate (of JOn and Kate plus 8) got pregnant and I don't understand how so many multiples can result from that.

Yes, I am curious about that now too. I know what an IUI is- I think- but does that also increas your risk of multiples? I didn't know it did... I'd like to learn more...

it depends on how many eggs you get from stimulating...some drs won't do an IUI if you show more than a few follicles b/c of increased risk of multiples...they will convert to IVF to control it...although it seems that more and more these days are doing it anyway

An IUI is a intra uterine insemination

regardless of why and how thank goodness they are doing well and I just Chat Icon they will be able to afford it. I am sure that is why her husband is going overseas to try to increase their income. I hope it works financially because regardless of why the children are here they are here and deserve a good life with out having to worry about being fed or clothed.

I agree 100%
You already have 6 children at home .........WHY would you go through a very expensive, specific MEDICAL procedure to have even ONE more child? Particularly when the chance of having multiples is so high ???

And IMO this Doctor is a quack -

And IMO this woman is a quack.

I agree.

Question: Does she work? Does she have the kind of health insurance that will cover all of this? I don't know much about IVF but don't you have to pay OOP for that and isn't it expensive?

After that, your insurance covers the unbelievably expensive care required to take care of pregnant women with multiples. I'm just wondering because she is a single mom living with her parents if she had the kind of finances and insurance to responsibly handle and pay for all of this -- and that is BEFORE the kids are even born.

I saw a special on what Kate went through and how long they were all in the hospital -- it was very expensive and she had great insurance.

You don't necessarily have to pay out of pocket. There are several insurances that will cover the cost of IVF. There al also grants you can apply for that greatly reduce the cost.

I would be seriously p*ssed off is someone with 6 KIDS applied for and received a grant for fertility treatments while there are so many childless couples who have to struggle to pay those insane medical bills - ........

*I know you're just stating the facts re: the funds are 'avaialble' I'm not attacking you - .......but the idea of that makes me sick -

there is no way a grant would be awarded to someone with 6 kids...From what I remember when I looked into it they won't cover anyone who even has multiple IVF failures

I wasn't asked anything like that when I applied for my grant. I just had to give our income amount, insurance papers proving it wasn't covered and was asked about FSH levels- as well as infertility diagnoses.

Maybe she was hiding the fact that she had 6 children from her doctors. Maybe she has more than one identity. Just a thought.

We don't know that she put 8 back... she could have put back 6 and gotten 8 from it. Are any identicals?

With things like assisted hatching, she could have definitely got more than just what she implanted.

I think it's clear that the grandmother is a little confused about the technical terms - so who knows if she is getting things correct. She could have meant IUI and 8 follicles instead of IVF and 8 embryos... we just don't know.

I think people tend to be very quick to judge without knowing the full details.

Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....

On an the NBC LA morning news a doctor said they think she went out of the country for the treatments.

He said she showed up at the practice 12 weeks pg and that's when they saw the multiple sacs and talked about selective reduction. He made it clear that they would NOT have condoned putting back that many embryo's for someone under 35, she is 33.

I guess time will tell.

Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....

She obviously has psychological issues - i say obvious b/c a normal individual who is a single mother with 6 children living with her parents in a 3 bedroom home would not consciously go out and intentionally get pregnant - a responsible, sane person would not do that, I am sorry. I also think there has to be some ethical issues with the doctors. True, maybe the doctors who dealt with the fertility treatments didn't know her issues, but that is a problem then. Her doctor was on tv talking about how this was such a blessing - yes, children are a blessing, but she now has 14 kids - apparently, all very young children. Her next door neighbor was on good morning america saying that she did not know how she was going to be able to do it. Totally, totally irresponsible.

But why was she even trying to get pregnant - she is a single parent with 6 children living with her parents in a 3 bedroom home - would a rational person attempt to have another baby?!

I was watching our local news and they showed i guess Californias ABC station tried to interview the father (who had a strong accent) but he yelled for them to get off his property. So the news interviewed a neighbor who say they don't agree and they will end up paying for it (taxpayers) since the economy is so bad. It was also said she is a single mother with 6 kids under the age of 7 and she is about 30 years old. She lives with her parents who have a 3 bedroom house 1 bath. They showed the house and it looks like a dump and is tiny. The reporter noted that it will cost her about 2.5 million a year to take care of all those kids especially 8 babies. There was nothing said about the father or fathers of the kids. But I can just bet that we will see and hear more of them in the future.

True, true true. I can just imagine what my parents would say if I already had 6 kids and was pregnant with 8, and only 33. First off, I doubt my parents would be too thrilled about me being a single mother to six (unless, of course, the father(s) of these children is (are) deceased or just took off one day). What's going on in her parent's minds?

My parents would flip. My dad gets annoyed when I visit for more than 5 days at a time with my 3 kids.

Yup I heard all this today on the news---that they are unsure if the father of her 6 kids (and possibly the 8 babies) is in her life at all...and that she is living with her parents.

1010 WINS reported that she's in her early 30s, SINGLE, and already has 6 kids.

This woman has got to be off her rocker and I feel for her children who will suffer the most. Who gets fertility treatments when they already have 6 kids??

Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....

I guess I am really surprised at a lot of the comments on here, and from the media. IMHO there aren't enough CLEAR details to make assumptions or judgements.

What if she DID want a big family...why does that make her insane? Having fertility issues myself, I cringe at the thought of having to terminate any of the embryos. I am not saying I would personally carry 8 children, but a little part of me thinks that there was something honorable about her not terminating any of the babies.

I think we so often hold others to our own ideas of right and wrong. We don't have specific facts that might play a role. Is she religious, is she from a big family, WHY did they transfer 8 embryos, etc...

I just wish for the childrens sake that the media would leave them alone and not treat them like a circus act. The media can really be so unkind.

ITA!

Who are we to judge? We don't know everything yet - and we might never know the FULL story.

Infertility is so complex!

Look at Jon and Kate... they always say in their show intro that they just wanted "one more" and ended up with 6. Just because the woman already has 6 children.. doesn't really mean anything. They could be adopted, foster, step-children... we don't know. Maybe they ARE all hers. Maybe she wanted a bigger family. Again, who are we to judge?
