Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....

I really wouldn't take Jenny McCarthy's word on anything. She's a celebrity, not a doctor. Just because you have a child with autism doesn't make you an authority on it. But thank you for the recommendation. I just needed to say all that because I worry that she is instilling false hope in people, so I hope you don't take offense to my post!Chat Icon

I really dont take it personally...i heard about it way before..and my mom...was researching about it for a while....and the doctors have been doing a research ...for about 12 years ..on autism and how it happens..they still dont have the actual prove..but..there is a link between vaccines and autism..and there are a lot of kids whos immune system is not strong to be able to have those abnormal bodies in it (like..mercury..aluminum)..
i know that she is a celebrity...but u know what ..she did come out and say llisten..i have a sick child..and this is what is helping him get better...and IT doesnt mean that it will work on everyone..but its not going to hurt to try!!! Wouldnt you do that??? I deff would!!!!..Celebrities..like that ...do spread the word..and not everyone will believe it,...but at least because she is famous..people will go and research about it and find out that diet...and many other alternative therapies..could help you child~!!!!!

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....

I know many families with children on the spectrum who have tried the diet. While it may have alleviated some of the behaviors their children have had, it didn't recover them. I personally don't think a child just recovers from autism. If they are fully recovered, I personally think they were mis-diagnosed. I'm speaking as a mother with a child on the spectrum. I also don't think vaccines cause autism. I know that many other parents with children on the spectrum have the complete opposite opinion as me, but honestly, most I have talked to, share the same one.

I'm glad you were able to get something out of the book though Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Very well said. I work in the field of education and I believe that there is such a rise in diagnosis because it is a spectrum disorder. I, too, don't believe that vaccines cause autism. I have to believe this because I would be up all night worried after every vaccine. There are many more articles and research that dispute this theory but unfortunately, we just hear about the ones that point the finger towards vaccines. I agree that there shouldn't be a one size fits all vaccine, but I don't think that this CAUSES autism.

I really agree with Rachel.

Furthermore, I do not believe that Jenny McCarthy's child was diagnosed properly, and I think it is really upseting that she is putting out there that she cured her child and families whose kids ARE on the spectrum try the same thing and feel like failures b/c they cannot "cure" their child.

I appreciate that she cares so much for her son and wants the best for him, but she is not an expert, if she wasn't a celebrity, her books wouldn't even be published.

ETA: There really is not much of a link between vaccines and autism anymore, and there wasn't when her child was vaccinatedChat Icon

Bingo. As someone in the field with many years of experience, I do not believe in the link between vaccines and autism. I also believe that children do not recover from autism though treatment and therapy can allow a child to change levels of functioning. I think Ms. McCarthy's information misleads A LOT of people and parents and is rather frightening from a professional standpoint.

i think its amazing what children can recover from with the right ammount of early intervention.. i have seen it many times before in the field i am in (i'm a NICU nurse and we follow the kids long term in developmental clinics) and i HAVE watched my child recover from autism.. to each his own opinion

ITA with you and said the same exact thing on the other thread on the NW board

i do not have children, but i am a professional in the field... i think that children can start to FUNCTION better from all sorts of therapy.. .music, speech, occupationl etc etc... but to say that a child is cured OR recovering is giving people false hope for sure

but just like said before....it all depends..and these..ladies..out here...really need to just have an open mind...!!!!!!!!! im not making anyone believe ...but im just trying for ppl to hear other ppl that it workd for!!!!!! and im glad that it worked for ur child!!!

No it doesn't. research says that thalidamide in vaccines doesn't cause it.... There's a lot of evidence that an immune challenge (either due to illness or vaccination) may be a trigger of some sort. On an autism thread a couple months ago I looked up and explained several of the genetic links to autism... most are mutations in proteins of the immune system. may be coincidence, but it also may be more than mere coincidence... only time will tell.

very interesting...thats true...thalidamide..doesnt cause it...its everything together....the child..may have low immune system..or other problems...and together with viccine...triggers it

I am an autism professional and a strong advocate for spectrum families. I would not recommend this book At all and think what she is doing is not helpful At all. I have many families who read it, and while they deemed it somewhat of an intersting perspective they did not feel it did anything to help them in any way. I think she is great At looking hot, and maybe would read any book about getting in shape after baby. Maybe.

I was in my Dr's office yesterday and they had a whole article about the Dr who did the study that said vaccines can lead to Autism and he is currently being brought up on ethics charges because he lied about his research. Not sure how old the article was but it was the first time I saw in up in the office.

Re: Jenny McCarthy...autism....

there was a massive epidemiological study including tens of thousands of kids... no autism link between thalidimide-containing vaccines and autism. What a huge waste of $$$, though. the original researcher apparently fabricated the data Chat Icon Chat Icon

absolutely right. I have yet to see one valid research article on the link. But have read so many valid, unbiased research on there being no link. Plus the incrimination against the original doctors who began the scare and were proven wrong and guilty of unethical research methods.

Found the article in my Dr's office...

Father of Vaccine-Autism Link Said to Have Fudged Data

LONDON, Feb. 11 -- The British researcher who first linked childhood vaccines to autism has been accused of falsifying data in a 1998 study published in The Lancet.

The Times of London reported Sunday that Andrew Wakefield, M.D., apparently altered clinical findings on eight of 12 children whose cases were the basis for the study.

The allegations follow disclosures in 2004 that Dr. Wakefield's research was partially, and secretly, funded by plaintiffs' lawyers in suits against vaccine makers, and that he had cut procedural corners in the research.

Dr. Wakefield issued a statement denying the new allegations. He also repeated earlier denials that the funding of his research affected his scientific conduct.

The 1998 study was the first to be published in a reputable journal that suggested the MMR vaccine could lead to autism.

Following its publication, rates of childhood vaccination in Britain and elsewhere fell dramatically.

The Times story noted that 1,348 cases of measles were reported in England and Wales in 2008, compared with 56 in 1998.

In the U.S., a large spike in measles cases was seen in 2008. (See: CDC Says Measles Cases at 12-Year High)

In the 1998 paper, Dr. Wakefield and colleagues presented evidence that the children had developed intestinal inflammation following vaccination. They suggested that the inflammation released gut proteins into the circulation that eventually migrated to the brain, causing permanent damage reflected in autism symptoms.

But according to the Times, the children's original hospital records differed in important ways from the descriptions in the Lancet paper.

Whereas the paper indicated that, in most cases, symptoms developed within days of vaccination, the records indicated that this was true only for one child, according to the Times.

The children's records also indicated that five of the children had psychosocial problems before vaccination, said the Times, but the paper described them as "developmentally normal."

In addition, the Lancet paper described abnormal intestinal pathology results in the children, but the hospital pathology reports showed no findings of inflammation, the Times report said.

Dr. Wakefield and two of his Lancet co-authors are currently facing misconduct charges before Great Britain's medical licensing board, the General Medical Council, related to the 1998 study and subsequent research.

They are accused of failing to obtain required approvals for the tests they performed on the children and other ethical violations, but the data-manipulation charges reported in the Times are not at question in the hearings.

In his statement, Dr. Wakefield rejected the newspaper's account, contending that the Lancet paper represented the children's conditions accurately. He added that other members of the research group performed the pathology reviews, not he.

"I did not play any part whatsoever in making the microscopic diagnoses of inflammation on any biopsy from any child investigated at the Royal Free Hospital," according to the statement.

The Lancet paper has come under fire before, sparked by an earlier investigation by the same reporter, Brian Deer, who wrote Sunday's Times story.

In 2004, Deer reported that parents of some of the 12 children in the 1998 study had been recruited as potential plaintiffs in a lawsuit against vaccine manufacturers and that the research had been partially funded by Great Britain's Legal Aid Board.

Those allegations led to the current General Medical Council proceeding.

That same year, 10 of the paper's 13 authors -- not including Dr. Wakefield -- retracted the paper's conclusion that the MMR vaccine may cause autism.

Paul Offit, M.D., a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and a prominent critic of Dr. Wakefield, said the new allegations cannot really undermine the credibility of the MMR-autism theory because it had already been disproved.

A series of population-based studies have failed to find evidence that vaccines cause autism.

"I'm not sure what more people need to say than that this man and his theory are discredited," Dr. Offit said.

He said there was no longer a scientific controversy about the role of vaccines in autism.

At the same time, he said, the Times report is unlikely to change the minds of those who believe in the link.

"There is not one shred of his hypothesis that has held up," Dr. Offit said.

He counted Dr. Wakefield among the true believers. "I think if you gave him a lie detector test, does MMR cause autism, and he said Yes, he would pass that test. He believes this at the level one holds a religious conviction."

Dr. Wakefield left Britain more than five years ago and now serves as executive director of Thoughtful House, an autism research and treatment center in Austin, Texas.
