Shotgun with children?
Does anyone own a shotgun ?
My husband wants to get one as we are moving out of brooklyn to suffolk. I dont want one b/c we have kids.
I just feel uneasy about it even if it is under lock and key.
Yes our kids are infants and cant even open cupboards yet (heck one of them is still in utero for a couple months). BUT they grow up and fast. I dont feel comfortable owning a shotgun.

Generally speaking guns and children dont mix....
But as long as the gun is locked up properly it shouldnt be a cause of concern....(gun locked in one case..ammo locked in another case...under separate lock and key)...
I can understand your concern.
What is his rationale behind purchasing a gun? Is he planning on taking up hunting? Taking it out to the range? Is he experienced with guns?

My husband always says there is no use owning a gun unless you can really shoot someone. His opinion is that when it comes down to it, a lot of people would wimp out.
I think that a.) a lot of guns are turned on the owners, either by accident or by violence and most important b.) where there are no guns, there can be no gun accidents.
I feel even more strongly about this issue after having been to a shooting range and trying several guns.
I went to law school in Western Pa. and many of my classmates were avid hunters. I learned about their views but my child will not be raised around guns.

Wow, just wow. I had no idea that Suffolk county was thought to be so 'dangerous'. 
Keeping a loaded gun under the bed is real trouble, ESPECIALLY with a child. When I covered stories for the news, I had a few where the child found the gun and 'played' with it. (Obviously it was a news story because the gun went off.) I can't tell you how those stories changed my life.  And I come from an area with a high crime rate, but now reside in Suffolk.

I don't think the poster implied that Suffolk is dangerous. Gun laws and licensing is much stricter in NYC then in Suffolk county. I would assume that's why he wants to get one gievn the move out east.
To answer the OP's question, my dad had guns growing up and they were locked in a cabinet and the guns and ammo were in different locked boxes. My dad had the only keys and he had a million keys on his key ring. I would have taken me days to figure out which one it was.
I can understand being uneasy about guns and kids, I would be as well. If you decide to get a gun, make sure you are safe about it.

I've often heard that if you have a gun for intruders, you're basically giving an unarmed intruder a weapon to use on you....
I'm not anti-gun, but I think guns are very dangerous to have in a house. Precautions can be taken, but all it takes is one mistake, or that moment where DC figures out where the keys are to the cabinets.... it's happened too often to ignore.
At some point, I may take DC out to a shooting range, since I want them to understand and respect guns for what they are and what they can do, but I don't want any where DC can possibly get their hands on them.
You also HAVE to tell any and all parents who come to your house (before they come to your house) that you have a gun in your home. THEY may not be comfortable with a gun in the house where their DC are....

My DH owns some guns to use for hunting. Growing up, my parents were overly anti-gun, but I had to learn to appreciate them when I met DH. So, my opinion can go both ways.
We have a gun safe/locker in our home. My IL's also have guns which are under lock and key and the kids are there a lot.
In response to your concern, I would never allow DH to have a gun out in the open. No way, no how. And if your DH were going to keep it under the bed, I assume it would have to be loaded...right? If there were an intruder in the house, he would not have enough time to get the gun out, load, and then find the intruder. For this situation, DH has a metal baseball bat under his bed.

I am very anti-gun, I would never allow a gun in my house children or no children.
To have a gun out in the open (i.e. under the bed) is a terrible, horrible, DANGEROUS idea.

I lost one of my best friends when I was 14 because she shot herself with her dads shotgun. I'm sure you can understand I'm not for guns in the home. Just like stated above if you lock it up by the time you unlock it and get it ready for use, it will be too late. And if you plan to keep it loaded under the bed ready to go then that right there is an accident waiting to happen.

Not in a million years. I am not a fan of guns and won't even be buying fake ones for Rylan to play with.
The only way I would allow it is if absolutely necessary...if DH was a police officer...something like that.

If you're afraid of intruders, get a dog not a shotgun. Much better deterrent when it comes to crime on personal property.
Generally speaking, guns are not a deterrent in preventing intruders nor do they help in stoping them once they are in.

i won't address your DH's choice to buy a gun, but i will say that DH and i both carry for work, and the guns are locked up at home in two separate gun safes. we have no intention of EVER giving anyone the combination to those safes. as soon as we walk in the door, the guns go into those safes.

I think an alarm system is much safer and more effective.
There are too many possibilities for disaster with a gun in the house.

Guns scare the crap out of me. It only takes ONE time to forget to lock it up, and you have a disaster on your hands. Personally I just don't think it's worth the risk, and TRUST ME, I know very well what it is like to fear intruders as we had 5 robberies in my house growing up, the last of which I was home alone and 2 men chased me through the house until I got out 
But, there are other alternatives to keeping a deadly weapon in your home that can fall in the wrong hands, not just your children but the potential intruder as well. If your husband is that worried, I would invest in a very good, state of the art alarm system, or get a big dog who will keep the family on alert at night while you all sleep. A gun is just way too extreme for my comfort level...

I think if the gun is unloaded and locked up, then it is fine....however, my concern is that if there WAS an intruder, would I have time to unlock the gun, find the bullets, load the gun, etc in time
under the bed loaded is a ridiculous idea and I would honestly question my DH's judgement if he suggested this as a viable option

I agree with many posters... my DH also has mentioned buying a gun to protect us at home, but I HATE the idea.. and if we both do not agree, it will not be bought and brought into my house. I personally believe that if we had a gun, and it was under lock and key.... how is he going to get it and have it ready in enough time to protect us from an intruder? I agree with the alarm system, we have a dog (yes she is 12 lbs... not going to do us any good.. haha..) I would allow DH to have a metal bat or anything else to protect us, just not a gun... I am so anti-gun.... so I am biased

DH has a gun safe, which is locked all of the time, and the keys are hidden. I would NEVER allow a gun to be out and under the bed. NEVER!!!!!
eta: DH is in the military, that is why he has guns.

No guns in our house, and especially no guns under the bed.
You or a member of your household are more likely to kill yourselves than deter an intruder.
Tell him to get an alarm, a dog and a big bat and form an escape plan. You'll pretty much protect yourself as much as possible if you do.
