Many people said that they mounted the gun above the door to their bedroom- fully loaded, and ready to go just in case.
That is just complete insanity!

I am not being defensive, but i have to address both sides of the issue to have an argument.
It is not an argument or a defense for a guy in law school to say " i dont want one, end of story". My husband and i dont communicate this way. A lot of statistics i was trying to find are not accurate. When they talk about chidren shooting themselves with guns it is almost ALWAYS a handgun and they consider a child in many statistics anyone under 20 or sometimes 23. If a 20 year old wanted to shoot someone with a gun, he can get a gun anyways, regardless of if the parents have one.
I asked this in a different place, where a lot of people are from PA/NC and other pro gun states- and the responses are very different. So it is hard to gauge what is accurate.
Many people said that they mounted the gun above the door to their bedroom- fully loaded, and ready to go just in case.
edit: I can shoot a gun as well. And i would get additional shotgun training.
Please note a shotgun is different from a handgun. I am trying to understand both side of the pros / against to owning a shotgun with a child. It really is depending on who I ask as to the response I get.
Many of the responses are grounded in political views on gun owner ship rather than pure statistics.
I have lived in PA for over 10 years - doesn't change my opinion, and all of my friends here have the same opinion as I do.
And a loaded gun mounted above the doorframe is a TERRIFYING idea. I cannot tell you how many times I've walked into a room to find my 3.5 year old standing on a chair, reaching out for something that I thought was clearly out of her reach.

ITA with Beth.
And I would NEVER let my child into a home that had a gun like that

OK, I was trying to be understanding, but the fact that you are even TOYING with the idea of keeping it loaded under your bed or entertaining the idea of it loaded and mounted above your door, is a HUGE red flag that there SHOULD NOT be guns in your house with children there. You obviously are unaware of how crafty a toddler can be. I would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS allow my child at a playdate at your house and I would hope you would inform other parents so they can make that decision for themselves.
Its not about YOUR training, nor do I think most of the responses are mounted in political views.......in both cases I believe the responses are driven by the need for child safety vs. the unlikely event an armed intruder breaks into your home.
Im at a loss at this point.
(on a side note, Im am in no way anti-gun either, I dont see a need for it in my life or home here in Suffolk, but for those that do or have husbands whose jobs require guns......I am an advocate on proper gun safes. I am anti - loaded weapons under the bed, above the door or loaded weapons at all, and gun and ammo being stored together.)

I say this with a bit of sarcasm and yet unfortuante truth.

Also, alarm and baseball bat is of no help when there is a gun in your face. And dogs can be shot.
With all due respect, if the gun is already in your face you arent going to have time to get to your gun under your bed...
Please remember that my comments were not againest gun ownership...I see nothing wrong with owning a handgun or a shotgun.
But I am having a difficult time with the prospect of feeling comfortable with a loaded, albeit locked, gun under the bed...
As a parent we take every precaution to protect our children from harm. Which Im assuming, based on your comments, is what your DH is wishing to do...HOWEVER, he needs to be realistic that his actions in this matter may be putting them in harm as well.

I am very anti-gun, I would never allow a gun in my house children or no children. To have a gun out in the open (i.e. under the bed) is a terrible, horrible, DANGEROUS idea.
ditto
the odds that weapon accidentally kills a family member is much higher than your DH killing an intruder... he could think one of your kids is a burglar just becuase they got up to drink some milk in the middle of the night.
never in my home.

I have a BIG issue with a gun being under a bed only in a lockbox and I can tell you that I do not want my child going to a home that has this. Children are MUCH smarter than we ever give them credit for. If they know where the gun is, and they have friends over, you don't think it would be exciting for them to show off this gun?? It's just a bad situation all around.
Although I always say I have no problems with guns in the house, I do agree that a lockbox is NOT safe.
ONLY a real gun safe with a combination is the way to go if you have weapons in your house.
I personally see nothing wrong with weapons BUT I am a very strong advocate for safes. REAL safes made specifically to keep guns locked with the maximum protection! Kids are smart. yes, it's about teaching them that the safe is a nono zone too . It IS about responsibility and safety! It has NOTHING to do with how well you can shoot with a gun.

Re: Shotgun with children?
I'm trying to figure out the logic of your porposed locations
OK - you keep it loaded over the door. Intruder enters through the door or through the window and either attacks you or puts a gun to your head, how are you getting to the door to get your gun? You have to figure that any intruder who breaks into someone's house; knowing someone is home, is not coming unarmed.
The bedroom door would lilkely be a point of entry, so how would you get the gun - you'd have to fight past the intruder.
Basically, I have the same question with putting it under the bed - what time do you think you will have to get it if you're being attacked, or you have a gun to your head?

I would never in a million years feel comfortable with a gun in my house. If its in a lockbox, what's the point then? If its loaded under or over the bed, that's death waiting to happen, most likely to a family member...I could never and would never allow that in my home.

No way, ever.
I am totally pro-gun too. So is DH, he grew up in a home where shotguns were kept, he knows how to shoot well, etc. It's not a political stance, or a question of whether DH would be able to shoot the gun. It's just a child-safety thing. Sure, your DC might never accidentally set off the weapon (hey, DH and his sister never had an incident and there were multiple guns around), but you are taking a BIG, BIG unnecessary risk.

Re: Shotgun with children?
for those mentioning the phone lines being cut with an alarm system.... i don't know about all systems, but the one we put in (Slomin's) has a feature, if the phone like is cut, its an automatic signal to the central station that they call the police. the line is monitored. and if its not working, for whatever reason, a signal goes out that there is a problem. they'll send the cops. plus there are also back up systems than can dial on a cellular frequency in case of lose of land line service. there are options. it doesn't mean the alarm is useless. besides its a deterrent, who is going to pick the house with the alarm when there is a house next door with no alarm?

Re: Shotgun with children?
My DH is a Police Officer and he has no choice but to keep his guns in the house, however they are locked in a key and code, gun safe, up high in a closet. You need both to get into the safe. There is NO WAY EVER that DH would be allowed to have a gun in the house is he were not a cop, especially to keep it under the bed. You should absolutely stand your ground with this. There should not be a gun in your house unless it is locked up, with or without children.

Re: Shotgun with children?
(that was me posting above....I was signed into my fake name when I was hiding from being pregnant haha)
this post frightens me.......
I'm fine with the fact that some peoples careers make them own a gun in their home, that's totally different and those people are trained properly.
However, owning a gun for the protection of your family, mounting it on a wall, having it loaded in a lock box or under your bed IS INSANE!!!!! I'm sorry but it is. You would rather put your child at risk everyday of their lives to risk one day of an intruder POSSIBLY coming into your house????
An intruder can take that gun and turn it on you just as quickly as you think you can scare him away with it.

Re: Shotgun with children?
I have very little experience with guns - I've shot a .365 at a gun range once & that's it. I can't imagine where you are going to live where there are riots unless you're planning on attending Black Friday at Walmart.
I respect someone's right to own a gun. While I don't understand the need & believe it will lead to violence rather then end it, it is your right to bear arms. With that right comes the responsibility to make sure those guns are kept safe.
That does NOT mean under the bed or over the door. It means a lockbox - period.
While it is unlikely a child could figure out how to shoot themselves with a shotgun, they can easily figure out how to pull the trigger & accidentally hit someone else. Also there are plenty of times teenage angst can come into play - and again it is your responsibility to secure your gun.
Also I wanted to thank you for the reminder to regularly ask my kid's friends parents if they have guns in the home. I did it for awhile but with getting to "know" people, I've gotten lax about it.

Re: Shotgun with children?
It sounds like a terrible idea to me, and your logic about phone lines being cut and a baseball bat being useless is very flawed... I've read every post on this thread and I really haven't seen anyone quote statistics or post political opnions - several posters have admitted to being very pro-gun and have STILL said that this is a bad idea.
If there's a gun in your face you have no time to get the gun under your bed, either.
When I was 10 I was a nosy little thing. I could tell you where my dad hid his porn () and what my mother stored under her bed, in her night table, etc... I would have found a gun under the bed in no time.
This has nothing to do with my stance on guns. This has everything to do with how I feel about child safety.

Re: Shotgun with children?
here's a statistic from the american academy of child & adolescent psychiatry - which I would consider an unbiased source.
Guns are an unfortunate and dangerous reality in the lives of our children and adolescents. It is estimated that 50 million Americans own over 200 million guns. Over one-third of all homes contain guns, and despite continuing educational efforts, the majority of these guns are kept loaded, unlocked and potentially accessible to children. Research indicates that if a gun is stored in a home, the risk of homicide increases threefold and the risk of suicide increases fivefold. Guns also are 43 times as likely to be used to kill a family member or someone known to a family than to kill a stranger.
