5 month old & a nursing home- WWYD?
Long story short, my mom is in a nursing home. I just got an email from my sister to the rest of the family saying that my mother is not allowed to come to my house for thanksgiving. We were having everyone here.
Am i being unreasonable for not wanting to bring my 5 month old son to a nursing home? I feel guilty that she doesn't get to see him that much, but with all the germs... i just don't want him getting sick.
WWYD? Bring him or no?
I really don't have the time to run up there tomorrow to see her (it's an hour away) with 15 people coming to my house, but i feel guilty. WWYD?

Well my lovely sister sent all of us an email at 5:10pm tonight saying that the neurologist does not want mom to leave the facility because of her delusions (believes she can still drive, walk, etc) and sees it as too much of a risk.

i work at a nursing home and have a 4.5 month old. i took her there when she was 3 months old. i tried to keep her away from as many people as i could, no one was allowed to hold her. she didnt get sick thank god but it was also at a time of year when there wasnt anything really going around.

If my mother was well enough to enjoy the visit, I would bring him. Most likely he would be fine, and the worst case scenario is a virus, which he'd be over in a week. But the significance to your mom is huge.

As much as I hate to admit it, I don't think I would. Too many germs and people don't ask before touching. Especially since there will be so many extra people there visiting for the holiday. I would try to go another time during the day midweek to minimize exposure.

I took DD to see her Great Great Grandfather in a nursing home when she was almost 3 months old. We stayed in his room the entire time so we weren't exposed to other people. I'm so glad that I took her because that was the first (and last) time he saw her (we live OOS). He passed away the next week.
I would probably go

Re: 5 month old & a nursing home- WWYD?
Im really sorry about your mom not being able to leave the nursing home on Thanksgiving.
I have to say I took my DD when she was 7 months to a nursing home to visit an old friend of the family and the whole time she was in the stroller and not able to touch anything. She just looked around - observed - we were there about 1/2 hour and then left but it worked out really well No one touched her - when we left I used a wipe on both of my girls hands just in case they were exposed to any germs and they were fine. It was actually so cute to see the elders admire and smile at the girls when we were there.
Im actually going to visit my grandmother tomorrow at the home and taking the girls there because i know it will really make her happy to see them - if you have the opportunity to go - I would definitely go - if you are concerned it will be too crowded maybe try taking your DC there another day.

Convenient that she sent the email out tonight
I'm sorry sweetie...if it were me...I *probably* would go too. As much as I would be afraid of what's lurking in the air...i think that you might regret NOT going more than going there and being EXTRA careful and only bringing Jacen into her room...KWIM?

Re: 5 month old & a nursing home- WWYD?
My Grandfather was placed in a nursing home/rehab facility after a leg surgery. The "germs" that he was exposed to while there ultimately led to a very sad and painful death. What he contracted was contagious, and he shared rooms with several people before he was diagnosed. As a result, I personally would not under any circumstances bring a small child into a nursing home. JMHO.

My mother was in a nursing home. I brought my son there when he was 6 months old. My mother really wasn't doing well and I wanted her to see him. We only brought him in for about 10 minutes and then my husband took him and my 2 year old outside.
There are really a lot of germs in a nursing home so just be careful to wash your hands before and after you leave.

Re: 5 month old & a nursing home- WWYD?
My grandmother was in a nursing home from when DS was born. She was on a feeding tube and couldn't leave there so that was the only way she would ever have known him (she died shortly before he turned one). We went there numerous times and on most holidays right from when he was born. During the warmer months I would only visit with her outdoors out in the garden so I could stay for longer periods of time - in fact, I brought DS there on the way home from the hospital when he was two days old so she could see him. During the colder months I would only stay for maybe 10-15 minutes b/c I am a germaphobe as well. But DS was there last Christmas and he was less than 4 months old. I just stayed in the lobby area and only for 15 min or so. It's tough but, in the end - it really depends on your situation - I felt I had no other choice for me.

Why dont you call the nursing home she is in and get their opinion? My grandfather was in a nursing home before he passed and we took DD there a couple of times. My mom spoke to the nurses beforehand and it was OK. One time the nurses assured us it was fine to visit him and we hung out in the common area. Then, another time, they saw her come in and they recommended that my DH wait in the car with her, because there was something going around.
I am so sorry that your mom can't come to you today.

That's a good idea. Thanks!
I can't possibly go today with all the things we still have to do, but maybe tomorrow.

I would go, there are germs at the supermarket. Just wash your hands if you are nervous. I'm not scared of any germs.

I bought DD to see my grandmother when she was about 3 months old, maybe even less. A nursing home has just as many germs as any public place ie the mall. People there aren't sick like a hospital, they just need help living. I think it's perfectly safe. You just don't let strangers touch him and take the normal precautions you would in any other place.
