6 week olds & sleeping

My daughter is 6 weeks old today, we started her out from the very beginning in her crib at night and up until 3 nights ago shes has slept great at night. The past 3 nights she screams as soon as you lay her in the crib, as soon as you pick her up shes sleeping on your shoulder. I've actually slept with her on the couch. My question is, is she to little to let her "cry it out" for a little while in her crib? Any suggestions would be appreciated we are exhausted.

I never let Emerson cry it out at that age. They are too little and don't know how to soothe themselves to sleep. I would pick her up and hold her and do whatever I needed to in order for her to sleep even if that meant sleeping with her on the couch. It's exhausting but it will pass. Hang in there. She has a mobile in her crib that plays music but she doesn't seem amused with it at all. Its just so weird b/c she was sleeping fine in the crib up until a couple days ago. I have to go back to work next week and I'm very nervous about not getting any sleep and having to work.

You'll get used to the no sleep work thing. My DD wasnt interested in the mobile until about 2 months. I would get a white noise machine..a loud one and put it in the crib with her. Do you swaddle? The miricle blankey/swaddle me saved my life together with the sound machine.

ITA. DS is 11 weeks and still hates the crib. I wish he slept in the crib, but he sleeps in my arms. We've tried so many things to get him to like the crib, but he screams as soon as we put him down in it.

Will your DD sleep anywhere else like the swing or bouncer? DS will nap in the swing once per day, but won't sleep in it at night. I can get some sleep with him in my arms, but if you're worried about that, maybe you can try having her sleep in something other than the crib.

Re: 6 week olds & sleeping

my DS is also 6 weeks old.

He loves the Ocean Wonders Aquarium. When he does stir, we press the button and get at least another 30 minutes out of him. (only during naps). Otherwise, he sleeps about 3-4 hours during the night.

Re: 6 week olds & sleeping

Your situation sounds similar to mine. My DD is 5 weeks and has been sleeping well in her crib since day one. We have discovered that she is hungry. I'm not saying that's your case of course, but we ended up having to give her more to eat. We have a radio set to white noise right near her crib and we also keep her swaddled. Sometimes the pacifier soothes her to sleep as well. Good luck.

I know how frustrating it is, especially when you feel like you had a good thing going with the sleeping! Chat Icon

Sorry I also wanted to add that I had considered putting my DD's mattress on an incline if she continued to be uncomfortable. Maybe with one of those crib wedges? (I've never seen them...only heard of them.) Same story...I would hold her upright and she'd stop. So, I was thinking maybe she was having some sort of digestion/reflux prob. Just a thought.

Re: 6 week olds & sleeping

I remember how exhausting the first 8 weeks or so were. Some days DS was in my arms the entire day and night. In another month you will see a big difference and it just keeps getting better. IMO she is way too little to let her cry it out. I agree the FP aquarium is great, DS loves it.

thanks everyone! I thought 6 weeks was too young to cry it out. My mother in law keeps telling me I'm going to spoil her by picking her up everytime she cries! Hopefully this phase ends soon. btw how old should your child be before you let them cry a little?

Every book will tell you to pick them up and hold them as much as they want whenever they want for at least the first 10-12 weeks. You cannot spoil a baby that young. They do not have the ability to self soothe at that age and letting them cry it out only serves to upset them and make them feel abandoned. Picking them up and holding them allows them to feel secure. I would never let a newborn cry it out. I totally disagree with your MIL. Emerson is just over 5 months and only now I am letting her CIO for a bit at times and it works at this age because she has learned ways of soothing herself but I would never have let her CIO in those early weeks. I think it is cruel to do so because the baby won't understand why it's being left to cry and it will only upset them more. Just my opinion. Chat Icon

Edit - We held Emerson all the time. She slept in our arms some nights on the couch and FYI......she transitioned to her crib at 12 weeks with NO problem, started sleeping from 10pm to 8am at 7 1/2 weeks, and by 3 months she cut out her last bottle and started sleeping straight through the night from 7:30-8pm to 6:30-7am with no problem so all of our holding and cuddling did not spoil her in the least. It was what she needed at that time. Chat Icon

Re: 6 week olds & sleeping

My DS will not sleep in the crib either. He will sleep in the bouncer for an hour or so and then wakes up screaming. He naps fine in the swing, but at night only wants to be held. He has been sleeping in my arms for a couple of weeks. Its not the ideal situation and not what I wanted, but I was starting to go crazy from the sleep deprivation.
DD on the other hand sleeps 5-6 hours at a time in the crib, although the past couple of she has been difficult to get back to sleep after her feeding.
They will be 9 weeks old tomorrow.

Re: 6 week olds & sleeping

when DD was that age, we had a tough time with her too... the swing helped a TON- that was one of the few things that she would sleep & nap in- then we got the snuggle nest- it worked wonders! Sometimes we had the snuggle nest in between us in bed, and then we eventually moved it back to her crib to transition her back... Let me know if you want to borrow ours... it has a slight incline if they like that and positioners to make them feel cuddled. I dont remember when we first started letting Raylee cry it out a bit, but it was when the DR gave us the thumbs up- but she said to start at 15 min... we would also put her down in the bassinet part of the pack n play, and when she would cry, we would shake it a bit, and that would help her get back to sleep... and dont listen to your MIL, you cant spoil a baby that young!
