Not NYC, but I just had a client in Elmont call and say not to bother coming to see them because their whole area has yet to be touched by a plow.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
Most of Howard Beach was not plowed. Just the main roads (the main boulevard and the avenue leading up to it).
There are abandoned cars all over the place.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
I live in Brookly. Dyker Heights no plowed at all. My brother has a truck with a plow & has been driving around various people the past two days & says none of Brooklyn is plowed. He has been trying to plow on his own but how much can one guy with a small truck & plow possibly do?
We have abandoned cars all over by us. So bad. I think they should all get $500 fines for causing such problems. They are one of the biggest reasons why so many areas couldn't be plowed.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
DH is a cop in Brooklyn and he said it's the worst he has ever seen. It took him an hour to get to a call for help last night- that was only a few blocks away. He and his partner had to keep getting out of the car and SHOVELING their patrol car out. That is how bad it was. They kept getting stuck. A lot of the patrol cars were buried and couldn't even go out. You would think that around a police precient would take precedence but no.
I am not sure what is going on- the city is usually very good with the plowing as compared to LI!

I wonder if one of the reasons they're not doing a better job in the city is because they don't have to worry about the school buses this week, kids walking to school... etc.
I know it was a lot of snow, but still! It's a shame they don't have better strategies by now.. it's not like this is the worst snow the city has ever seen!

my mom is in canarsie bklyn..no plows. she can get her car out of the drieway, but cant get down the street. she's essentially trapped.
my sick grandmother is in sheepshead bay. god help my mother if she had to get to her today.
i have friends in SI that havent been plowed either. my MIL is in bensonhurst..her streets arent plowed either.
NYC better get their **** together b/c it becomes dangerous at some point.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
I live on an avenue so I'm plowed but the side streets aren't necessarily plowed. It makes no sense either - the block my kids' day care is on was plowed, but the next block up wasn't, but the one after that is. It's so random.

I think it's a combinations of things..the fact that schools are closed and it's a "slow" week. I think on one hand it's good that the city is saving some money.
but there are of course IMBECILES that try to drive their dinky dodge neons over 18 inches of snow and then are totally surprised when they get stuck.
they are causing some SERIOUS safety issues by blocking streets.
we have a fire house on our block and the trucks have no problem getting over the snow if there were a fire, but the jackasses with their cars...that is were the big problem is.
luckily most of brooklyn is pretty walkable. I went out shopping yesterday walking with very little problem.

Kew Gardens is a disaster. Metropolitan Ave. was plowed at 6:00 a.m. this morning but the rest of the neighborhood is a scary ghost town.

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T
I'm in SI and we have not seen a plow on this block.
My parents finally did late last night so they are coming to pick me up (meeting them on the corner) and running a few errands. Very fustrating snce my BF needs to get out for work tomorrow. They were closed yesterday and he is WFH today.
Very fustrating
ETA: The abandoned cars are annoying me! We got stuck getting into our driveway Sunday night and after 12/5 hours of driving we worked on getting unstuck to make sure we weren't blocking the street. Unlike some idiot up the block from me

I'm in southern Brooklyn and haven't seen any plows. My block is awful and most of the surrounding streets are as well. Not to mention all the cars abandoned everywhere. Unless there was an emergency, it is beyond me where some of these people were going.

indeed. We're going to take a walk to McCaren park today...
I told DH that our street isn't very important so it could be days before we can go anywhere with the car.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote here...
except i'm confused as to where the city is saving money. the DSNY workers are ALL out there working!! ALL the ones they have are working 14+ hour shifts... every single day... no days off until the 2nd week of the new year, at least. So it's not that the city is saying... well school it out so you, you, you, and you stay home.
the ONLY saving money they did was... they haven't hired a new DSNY class in about 3 years.. when they usually hire a few classes a year... so they are short workers.... not because people are home relaxing... but because DSNY has been on a very long hiring freeze... that's bloomberg's decision... so blame him.
You hit a MAJOR issue though... the imbeciles out there getting their cars stuck all over the place. they are the MAIN people to blame. Because of them plows cannot get down those blocks. Also, the cars that have been driving through it with their 4 wheel drive... well they packed the snow down so tight with their wheels that plows going over those blocks... cannot physically lift the snow off the streets. The packed down snow has frozen solid to the point where it's just stuck... and the plow goes OVER it instead of being able to scrape it.
this snow storm was different from past storms.... there are many differences.

nope that's NOT it AT ALL!! ALL the DSNY workers are out there. They are FOR SURE NOT being lackadaisical at all... and esp not because school is off this week. That has no bearing on any of it.
They have been presented with other issues with this storm... and honestly, this is the worst storm we have had in a long time... esp in terms of the snow drift as well.
Please read the post about the abandoned cars that are hindering the plowing process... not only the abandoned cars, but also the cars that have been driving around.
there were also FAR MORE people out driving DURING the storm than in many other storms we have had in the past. All those cars were stuck and the plows are spending far more time being called to help cars that are stuck.... when really these cars should not have been out there in the first place!
