no.. when they plow they plow alone in the car.
it wouldn't be safe to take pics and plow at the same time.. or to stop and take pics.
otherwise i would ask him.

My DH always has someone else in the truck with him while plowing so I guess I thought that was norm for all cities.

my parents in Queens have not been plowed. NO CARS are blocking the street. A plow came near the block. Residents begged the plow to come down. Driver said NO. I dont know why though.

where in queens?

what do u mean.he was doing a main road and went by,was parked there?..they have certain blocks they have to do..thats the route..is ur parents block a main road?

or a wide enough road for a plow to get down.

what are the conditions of that road?

they do have SET blocks they have to go down and can't really deviate... and if they get stuck on a block they shouldn't be on they can get in trouble.

But really... maybe one day your parents will just be lucky enough to move to the enchanted location that is long island.

Don't worry, I'm defending them with you! My DH is sanitation (not DSNY) and had to plow in our village and his plow was stuck (and there weren't cars blocking it!) it was just a bad storm. But the people that felt the need to go out by car when they shouldn't have should be fined!!!

I don't think ANYONE is attacking DSNY workers but the way this was approached has DEFINITELY been different than in the past... I have been through MANY storms in this city and this by far was the WORST....

I'm blaming Bloomberg and the *higher ups*

Waiting 2 days to have your street plowed is ridiculous.. and calling people "imbeciles" for trying to get to work is wrong.... If the streets are not plowed, people take it into their own hands. I watched a bunch of livery cab drives PLOW my street with SHOVELS so they can get out to the main ones. WAAAAAY after this street should have been plowed in the first place.

there are a lot of things DIFFERENT about this storm from past storms. One major difference is that MORE CARS WERE ON THE ROAD THE NIGHT OF THE STORM... that's when the majority of the cars became abandoned. more became abandoned on MONDAY.. while the city was on a total shut down.

Those things were a MAJOR hinder in the process.

Then the cars that did make it around bc they had 4 wheel drive.. well those early drivers cars packed the snow down sooo tightly that when a plow goes down that block to plow.. the snow is solid and packed and the plow can't scrape it up... instead it goes right over it.

sorry but my street had NO PROOF of ANYONE driving over it until the plows arrived today...

I have proof with pictures... only imprints in the snow were those of footprints.

next excuse.

again-- I'm not blaming your DH or DSNY workers... I am blaming the administration...

Is your street considered tertiary?

but how can the plows get down the street if cars r blocking the ways in..imnot saying everyone could not have been plowed..all i know is dh had 60 blocks to plow last night and he said half he could not get down because of stranded cars...and also he helped 10 cars..one being a ambulance..get out..yes he got out and shoveled cars out...that takes time away from plowing also

after 2 days I would think people would start taking matters into their own hands.... sorry. I've been here all day for 2 days. NEVER did I once see a plow try to get down the street... we have been waiting like CRAZY....

If there are no abandoned cars blocking your street then you should tell them that!

HELLO WE HAVE!!!!

in the truck for garbage they get 2 guys. but in plow it's jsut the one.

i think the other guys are in salt machines.

after all the plowing is done.. they give them all shovels and the rest of the 12/14 hr shifts are manually done... it's grueling.

DH in Nassau has set blocks too. He's not Nassau county, but village (doing the side streets of our village) and has specifics of what he has to do. He was stuck for 3 hours Sunday night trying to plow!

Re: Anyone else in nyc NOT have their street plowed?T

Elmhurst area

He was doing a mainish road. They are directly off of that, a sidestreet but plenty of room for a plow to get down. Always does every year during the snow (albeit they are the last last ones always). Residents apparently got to talk to him and he said no. He probably was afraid he would get stuck? Or he wasn't allowed since it wasn't priorty? That's what I am thinking.

But NO cars were stuck and no trucks has mashed down the snow. The block has been untouched.

DH has 3 guys on his regular truck (one driver and 2 tailmen) and then for plowing and sanding it's 2 people. We're just a village though, not a city!

In NYC it goes Primary streets, secondary then tertiary. I'm guessing that they are on a tertiary street. It sucks, but that's how it is. My parents are on the same type of road in Queens Village and still not plowed.

ahh old school!
they used to have 3 guys.. but the city got rid of one guy.. now when the guys make a truck they get extra truck money for the extra work since they have 1 less man.

city had to spread their men a little thinner....

Is your street considered tertiary?

YES IT IS... it is a road that TRUCKS use to get through our neighborhood.

Luckily, DH & I were able to get to our places of employment through mass transit but I find it SO INTERESTING that areas of Manhattan "specifically Times Square" are ABSOLUTELY CLEAN while the outer boroughs are struggling...

TWO DAYS IS TOO MUCH.

This snow storm was NOT THAT much worse than others...

then people call us *imbeciles* for trying to take matters in our OWN hands???? please...

Yup, from 1am to 4am DH was stuck. What a waste for them! Thankfully DH drives an Expedition and hasn't gotten stuck. Granted we live in the same town he works in so he doesn't have to go far but it's still the area he has to plow Chat Icon

it was probably both he wasn't supposed to go down that block and scared he would get stuck.

just because this specific block didn't have any cars smash the snow down... there are other block where this is the case! my dh is out there and telling me what's going on each day. so that's fact. maybe not the specific block you speak of... but it is a cause of the problem.

call the mayor's office...

all i can say is either.1.he was assigned to do main roads..dh told me they just started doing side streets last night..or 2.u just got a jerk guy..its sad cause thats the guy who gets talked andcomplained bout not the other ones who are actually working

just wondering...and have to point this out.......

...people who were driving in the snow and abandoned their cars --- not all of them got bored and decided to run out for Burger King or something.....some were working hard, long hours and were coming home...

.....DH & I were both locked away over the weekend and had no idea how bad it was... he ended up staying overnight at his job (luckily he could) after I drove home and urged him to stay.

also, yes, it sucks. the hours suck for the workers too..they are long, grueling hours..and it sucks about NYE plans being ruined, we get it. However, again, this is another job you go into knowing this.... it's not the only job where things like this occur. Some military members are gone for over a year and miss every holiday and celebration...they try not to complain. They knew this going into it. It's no big shock. It is what it is.

They do think about it. Just set in their ways. I think it may have convinced them as they see how easy it has been when you have little to no cars on your street and everyone has their own driveway.

I am sure that driver was just afraid of getting stuck and following orders but boy are the residents fuming.

I agree that 2 days is too much. BUT you're on a tertiary road. My parents are on a tertiary road as well and my mom is on dialysis. There is nothing you can do. Keep calling 311. I agree it's ridiculous, but my parents didn't drive off their street! And there are 6 cars stuck on their block and a plow can't get down. These people were trying to get THE MORNING NEWSPAPER!!!!!!

how did people take matters into their own hands?
did they attach a plow to their truck and start plowing?
are they walking around with shovels to free the stuck cars?
are they reporting the abandoned cars to 311?

and yea.. it was a really bad storm. sorry but it was worse than the storms we had last year and the few years prior to that. when you work outside all night throughout each blizzard.. then you can see the difference.

and ETA: you got to work anyway.

You have no RIGHT to start anything. WHO ARE YOU? You don't know anything. I could careless about NYE plans. I care about my parents who can't get off their block because of A$SHOLES that decided they needed to drive to church, get a newspaper, breakfast, ETC. When you hear on the news there is limited visibility all day, STAY HOME. No job is worth your life or your loved ones, not even a days pay. So yes, you are STUPID for attempting to drive in those conditions. Maybe it's people like you that don't take thing seriously enough and just think LIers are too precautious with storms like this. Then again you just had to park in front of your house and not in your driveway because it wasn't "cleared" like your parents. Chat Icon

OH PLEASE... NO... I did NOT get tp work... YES.. they DID take matters into their own hands as much as they could... I watched over 15+ people shovel the STREET... so 2+ livery cabs can get down the street.

YES-- THEY DID walk around with shovels.. a friend of mine in Prospect Heights told me of the story that her NEIGHBORS helped push her to the main road.

This was not ONE DAY after the storm... BUT TWO

TWO DAYS.

no offense but the D-S-N-Y no matter WHO IS IN CHARGE dropped the ball.

MAJORLY.

NYC have had worse storms than this... my guess was the timing of it... and NYC revenue...

sad sad sad.

-dumb people blame the workers

-smart people realize this is a greater issue with the admin, the budget, the big political failures, and bloomberg & his cronies

I'm glad they (workers) are still going forward and trying to fix things promptly. I'm glad we have them...

but there is something more going on in the background, I feel.

And good for them.. that's what a community should be doing... helping one another. I'm glad to hear that.

And the last snowfall was MONDAY MORNING.. it's not even 48 hours after the last snowfall.

I thought you wrote you made it into work with mass transit.... OH YEA THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU WROTE.....

It's the worst storm NYC has seen in a LONG TIME!! Sorry if you disagree....

please point out to me ANY NEWS REPORT that said people went out b/c of these things...

TWO DAYS after a snow storm, with NO RELIEF is ridiculous...

luckily, I live in an area where I am ok... but watching 20+ firefighters run down my street, made me a *little* nervous....
