Most of Howard Beach was not plowed. Just the main roads (the main boulevard and the avenue leading up to it).

There are abandoned cars all over the place.

OMG I know! M parents live in HB and they are sooo annoyed!

this is from a DSNY's mouth.....

I'm quoting from FB.. his wife will see I posted this soon too!!! Chat Icon kisses to you wife!

"it's annoying me watching councilman Peter Vallone Jr., Christine Quinn, and all the other idiots bashing us! I had 60 blocks to plow last night and could not get down half of them because of cars blocking the way. It's ridiculous how people see things.Grab a shovel and help out assshole! 12 hour shift! im out"

ETA: these people who abandoned their cars SHOULD BE GETTING TICKETS!! they should also of ONLY abandoned them to GET A SHOVEL and free their damn cars so plows can get down those blocks. I'll bet some of the owners of these abandoned cars are complaining about streets not being plowed too. I just don't get some people's level of stupidity sometimes.

forget tickets - the cars should be TOWED!

I thought Bloomberg said yesterday that the cars would be towed. Wonder why they aren't doing it. Maybe the trucks can't get to them because the streets aren't plowed. NOT saying that to cause drama. Just meant it as "round and round we go" kinda statment. KWIM?

Speaking of towing...anyone see this video? Chat Icon

ETS: I keep hearing "will NYE be cancelled because of the blizzard"..so i wouldn't be surprised if Bloomberg is sending the plows that way to make sure it's ready. Don't kinow if it's true or not, but it would make sense. To be anywayChat Icon

they need those cars removed in order to be able to plow there... first comes the removal of those stupid cars then comes plowing!

would make sense... but the guys are working in their REGULAR assigned locations. My DH is assigned the bronx and he nor anyone in his garage has been sent to manhattan.

we have friends in the queens area... who also have not been sent to manhattan... they are working in their regular locations.

I get that. What I'm meant is buses and everything else are getting stuck.
The news showed 4 buses stuck all on the same street. Bloomberg wants people to use the public transportation but the roads aren't cleared and they're getting stuck.
I'm NOT saying it's the plows fault.
I'm just saying...something didn't seemed planned out.

lol that would be me..im the wife..

i feel like im typing and saying the same things over and over but kerri pretty much summed it up..

for whoever said they r being "slower"cause this was a off week..not sure which thread it was on

i can only say to you ..yes dh is def taking ito slower..14 hr shifts..comes home to sleep and goes back..last night had to shovel 10 cars out..yes shovel out..he gets out of the truck middle of night and digs out a car..and one was a ambulance..but its usally much busier than that

also would like to add and this is something dh told me today and i never even realized it..

the cars who dig themselves out and then re park..they park away from curb so easier to get out..which i understand, but yet again another reason the plows cant come down..

dont matter what i say or type we will forever be branded as not doing our jobs and everyone will just keep complaining..so when u r kissing your hubbies happy new years mine will still be on 14 hr shifts just doing nothingChat Icon

My parents in Queens Village still haven't been plowed. My mom is on dialysis too. Thankfully she does it at home and doesn't have to get to the center like she did last year.

To clarify: my parents block still isn't plowed because of idiots that felt the need to go out in a blizzard and are now stuck and the plow can't get down. I feel like the plow should just push all the cars down hill!

That's the reason blocks can't get plowed.... esp the abandoned cars... when the owner is in the car they can dig you out and you can be on your way. they can't do anything with abandoned cars.

its not the DSNY workers at all.

Don't worry, I'm defending them with you! My DH is sanitation (not DSNY) and had to plow in our village and his plow was stuck (and there weren't cars blocking it!) it was just a bad storm. But the people that felt the need to go out by car when they shouldn't have should be fined!!!

thank you.

i don't even care if i sound harsh at this point. it's just obnoxious and really annoying to keep reading bs that is inaccurate about the DSNY workers who are working sooooo sooooo hard! i SEE it first hand. But people like to complain. And they will find anything to complain about. When it's your husband working those 12, 14 even longer shifts... all in one.. coming home at like 8 am barely sleeping 8 hours, waking up and going RIGHT back out to work... 7 days a week.. finding out there won't be a new years celebration, because he will be in a plow, etc... and then hearing all these people complain that they aren't even doing anything... they need a reality check. And if people feel that way they should get a shovel and help out. they should go around and dig out the 20 cars each plow is digging out a night... taking away from plow time. they should call 311 and report the abandoned cars all over the place.

Im sure your DH is driving with someone else so have them take pictures to show everyone here! I'd really like to know how many cars are abandoned! My MIL was driving home from the courts in Jamaica and said there was an abandoned car on the entrance from the Van Wyck to the Belt Pkwy!!!!!! How is that car still there and not smashed to bits?!?!?! This jerk doesn't deserve to get their car back!

I don't think ANYONE is attacking DSNY workers but the way this was approached has DEFINITELY been different than in the past... I have been through MANY storms in this city and this by far was the WORST....

I'm blaming Bloomberg and the *higher ups*

Waiting 2 days to have your street plowed is ridiculous.. and calling people "imbeciles" for trying to get to work is wrong.... If the streets are not plowed, people take it into their own hands. I watched a bunch of livery cab drives PLOW my street with SHOVELS so they can get out to the main ones. WAAAAAY after this street should have been plowed in the first place.

after 2 days I would think people would start taking matters into their own hands.... sorry. I've been here all day for 2 days. NEVER did I once see a plow try to get down the street... we have been waiting like CRAZY....

there are a lot of things DIFFERENT about this storm from past storms. One major difference is that MORE CARS WERE ON THE ROAD THE NIGHT OF THE STORM... that's when the majority of the cars became abandoned. more became abandoned on MONDAY.. while the city was on a total shut down.

Those things were a MAJOR hinder in the process.

Then the cars that did make it around bc they had 4 wheel drive.. well those early drivers cars packed the snow down sooo tightly that when a plow goes down that block to plow.. the snow is solid and packed and the plow can't scrape it up... instead it goes right over it.

No I definitely haven't seen attacks on DSNY here, but on my FB yes, so just a general reminder.

I'm sorry but people are IMBECILES for trying to get to work on an unplowed road and having their cars get stuck. For God's sake MTA wasn't running! Yes, people take it into their own hands but they are obviously not using their HEADS. It was a very bad storm for NYC so they need to just relax. Unless the people that abandoned their cars were EMS, FDNY, DSNY, Hospital worker, MD, (all medical personnel) then I have no sympathy and their cars should be fined for being abandoned.

no.. when they plow they plow alone in the car.
it wouldn't be safe to take pics and plow at the same time.. or to stop and take pics.
otherwise i would ask him.

sorry but my street had NO PROOF of ANYONE driving over it until the plows arrived today...

I have proof with pictures... only imprints in the snow were those of footprints.

next excuse.

again-- I'm not blaming your DH or DSNY workers... I am blaming the administration...
