7mths old and seat facing forward
This weekend I went shopping with my sister, her friend and her 7mth old daughter. The infant was in a convertible car seat and it was facing forward. I also noticed the straps were sooo loose. I hate to be that neurotic mom who tells others what to do with their DC but I said something to the Mom and she said "OH she already weighs 20lbs so we turned it around" and my sister gave me a look to mind my business.
Isnt it supposed to be a min of 1 year/20 lbs? I cant stop thinking about it esp if god forbid they were in an accident.

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
My ped said one year AND 20 lbs. My DD was large for her age and I asked him because she was too big for the infant car seat before six months and I wanted to know before I had the seat installed. Their necks aren't strong enough to be front facing.

Yes, it's 1 year AND 20 lbs. They actually recommend you leave them rear-facing as long as possible.

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
That's very dangerous, and illegal. I don't think I could have kept my mouth shut. I would have played dumb like, "Oh really, I thought they had to be a year? I guess I'll have to look into that".
Our ped reminded us of this when Ryan was 6 months (b/c he was 19lbs 14 oz at that visit). It makes me mad if hers didn't do the same for her.

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
My nephew was a BIG baby. My brother turned him around early and the ped said to turn him back. It's 20lbs and a year!!. I am a neurotic mom too, my ds still faces backwards and he is 22lbs and 14 months. He still fits facing backwards and doesn't complain so I figure why mess with it. He is safer that way anyway.

I kept my DS seat around as long as I could.

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
You are right, it is one year AND 20 pounds, so even if DC weighs 20 lbs., you should wait to turn it.
I think it's good to say something initially just in case she isn't aware, but after that I would drop it or take it up with your sister.

OMG... Landon was over 20 lbs at 5 months and the thought nevr crossed my mind to turn the seat to face forward! She probably really doesn't know its 1 year AND 20 lbs. I don't think any mother would purposely put their DC in danger!

It's not illegal...at least NOT in New York anyway...
When the American Academy of Pediatrics changed their recommendation New York State never changed the law..although....the Department of Health does recommend that they remain rear facing for at least a year it's not a law...

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
The MINIMUM recommendation is 20lbs and 1 year, but the American Academy of Pediatrics and Consumer Reports both strongly suggest you keep them rear facing as long as physically possible.
This statement is from the American Academy of Pediatrics website:
Always use a car safety seat for infants and young children. A rear-facing car seat should be used until your child has reached one year of age AND weighs at least 20 pounds. Once your child is at least one year of age and at least 20 pounds, he can ride in a forward-facing car seat, but it is better to keep him rear-facing to the highest weight and/or height allowed by his car safety seat.

while I agree that it is dangerous, I am not sure about the legality
I know in NC, it is not illegal, just advised against

I agree, I mean my DS was over 20lbs at 4 months....Never thought to turn him around...I did it at 13 months and I was hesitant but DS was uncomfortable rear facing as he was almost 34 inches at that age as well as 30lbs!
I am sure she thinks its 1 yr OR 20lbs....I wouldnt have been able to keep my mouth shut over that one either.

This is what I was going to say too. I was telling my friend how it’s the LAW that baby has to be 20 pounds AND a year before rearfacing, and while we were on the phone we both searched online and it is NOT a law, but a recommendation. I was shocked—I really thought it was a LAW.
That said, I kept DD rear-facing until 19 months and was thrilled that she was rear-facing for so long. It’s best for their necks in case of an accident, and I preach to everyone I know to keep them rear-facing as long as possible past a year.

Re: 7mths old and seat facing forward
well one of the idiotic peds told me it was 20 lbs period. Yes, I specifically said, I thought it was 1 year and 20 lbs, but she insisted to do it at 20 lbs.
I walked out of there shaking my head that a PEDIATRICIAN could be such an idiot. and no, I didn't turn my DS until he was 1.
So who knows, maybe this woman just got bad advice.

What's even worse, is that the weight is no where near as important as the age. You want DC's neck muscles to mature and strengthen. If you have a 100th percentile DC at 6 months, it doesn't mean that their necks are as strong as a 1yo.....

So true! DS is just about 20 pounds at 5 months and can't even sit up on his own so I know his neck muscles aren't that strong.

It is NOT illegal in New York - other states, yes, but not New York.
It is recommended that all infants remain in a rear facing seat until they reach 20 pound and 1 year of age - but it is not illegal to turn them around before their first birthday in New York.

Exactly. My DS is almost 17 months and we still have him rear facing in a Britax Boulevard car seat.
