Rude neighbor or justified?
My Dh had mulch delivered early June and it was way too much (not sure how to quantify it but it was a huge pile). Slowly, every Sunday (his only day off), he has gotten to spreading it around the front and backyard. He insists on doing it himself.
Long story short, a neighbor posted "FREE MULCH" on the pile today (it is about 1/4 of what was originally there), but it has been there for over one month, close to two. Are we being rude or are they??
The mulch is fully intended on being used, so it definitely isn't free or up for grabs. But are we being rude by having it sit there? Thoughts? I honestly didn't think people would be so bothered by it.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
If it's on your own property & not theirs, then it's extremely rude & weird & none of their business to do that!!

Rude neighbor or justified?
That would make me so angry!
It's mulch, not a pile of garbage.
Did you guys confront them yet? how do u know it was the neighbor?

The pile is on the curb in front of our house.

Rude neighbor or justified?
So is it in the street or physically on your property? If it is in the road, it is still rude to put that sign, but I could see it being annoying to the neighbors. If it is in your yard, your property, then I'd be fuming.

Rude neighbor or justified?
I assume it's in the road, since that is where they dump the mulch. If it's in the road for a month, as a neighbor, I would be annoyed to be honest. BUT, I would never put a sign like that on it!
We have a neighbor who is a huge mulch offender. It actually was a hazard, as the huge pile was right when you turned the corner.

On the curb, blocking the sidewalk? Or in the street? Yeah maybe a little rude of the neighbor but way more rude of you guys for leaving it there so long.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
It's in the street, but definitely not enough of a pile to be blocking the road, so that is not the issue. It is less than if a car were to have been parked there. I think it is an eyesore, and that is what probably led the neighbor -- I don't know who it is, unfortunately -- to place the sign.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
I think it was more ballsy, and not necessarily rude for someone to put up that sign. As a homeowner, I think it's irresponsible on BOTH of your parts to leave a pile of mulch sitting on the curb like that.
To me, that's public property---completely different from your yard.
While DH does all of the outdoor work at our house, he would never leave it on the curb overnight, and he's probably the busiest person I know, and also only really has Sunday to do work around our house.
I've also had girlfriends fill up cloth recycling bags full of items dropped on their curb for landscaping purposes, using a plastic pitcher, if they knew their DH was too busy to do it.
It may have taken them all day, but this is ne of the responsibilities of being a homeowner.
Otherwise, hire a landscaper.
JMO, of course.

But that's not necessarily the point - knowing it is now in the road, and has been for 1-2 months, it would definitely push buttons. Although I wouldn't leave a passive aggressive note, I'd speak to you directly.
You're both wrong.

Yeah. Way rude of you guys to leave it there for so long. I think the sign is kind of funny.

Looking at a car on the curb is way different than looking at a pile of dirt for a month. Very much an eyesore.

Rude neighbor or justified?
Rude of you to leave mulch in the street for more than a day or two. Seeing the pile was in the street I kinda think the sign was funny.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
Not your property so I would not expect it to be ok to be sitting there that long. KWIM? Clearly someone got annoyed. If it was in your driveway, then they would have no right. But since its in the street, it is too long IMO for you to have left it there. Not that the neighbor owns the street either, but neither do you so I can see people getting annoyed with the pile there.

The street isn't anymore his than it is yours. I think he's an asshole for doing it. Maybe he could've offered to help move it instead.

Also, just as an aside, unless you told everyone, no one is a mind-reader that you guys have intentions of using the rest of the mulch, KWIM?

Rude neighbor or justified?
Your neighbor's actions were a bit passive aggressive BUT I think it is inconsiderate that you have left this pile of mulch in the street for an extended period of time. In my town this would be an issue since the street is actually public property.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
What bothers DH is what if someone helped himself/herself to it? We just moved in and our entire back and front yard needs landscaping. He is sunburnt and sore every Sunday from hard work putting flower beds in place. I know the neighbors see this.
Granted, it is taking a long time, to think it is "funny" to give someone else's things away for free is something I cannot rationalize.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
I just don't see the big deal with taking the time to move it a few feet to get it off the curb.
It's not like it would take a week to do this.
Is there a reason you can't help him either?

This does negate or make it acceptable for you to leave mulch for that long in the street.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?
BTW, I just showed this thread to DH, and his response was "isn't it too late in the season to be planting and laying mulch now".
I guess maybe for the fall but who knows what the neighbors would do then.
