Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

So.... where do you live? We actually ran out of mulch.

I never have seen piles of mulch in the street. I've never heard of this being done. I also, fwiw, live in a village where you'd probably get fined for leaving a pile of mulch in the street so I'd probably never deal with a neighborly dispute over mulch piles.

Is it stinky mulch?

I am intrigued.

Rude of you to leave mulch in the street for more than a day or two. Seeing the pile was in the street I kinda think the sign was funny.

True. At the same time though, this is one of those threads where I was like "Really? And she's wondering why the neighbor left a sign?".

I guess it doesn't count though until we come on LIF to authenticate it.

Honestly, I'm surprised it took someone so long. I live in a village I'm sure you'd get fined in. Next year, the polite thing to do would be to get it delivered onto your own property if you're going to take so long. It's been there over a month.

I know nothing about mulch Chat Icon can you move it on your own property? I can see this annoying neighbors, though I find the sign unnecessary I would talk to my neighbor if I was annoyed.

At this point I am picturing the OP living in a mansion in Upper Brookville or something, because how big is the property exactly that it would take more than 1-2 Sundays to get rid of that mulch? Chat Icon

It was rude of you to leave it there that long. Your neighbors are probably wondering if you'll be THOSE people who leave their Christmas lights up until April.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

i really don't think this is even a debate. You don't dump anything in the street. You are blocking water from properly draining, preventing a sweeper from cleaning, possibly blocking the garbage men from doing their job, possibly harvesting a nice giant steaming pile of rot with now pests roaming through, etc. To be honest I think what you are doing is illegal.

I get it stuff happens and you don't get around to doing things. So hire a few landscapers to come and finish the job - i think it would cost a whopping $50-$100 and then everyone would be happy.

I think the sign was funny.

Rude neighbor or justified?

Would you put your DCs toys on the curb for a month and expect people to not take them? IMO it makes no sense to have the mulch dumped on the curb, in the street...anywhere that is not your property. If ti were being delivered and used that day, ok, but not to have it sit there for that long. I'm also confused as to how you know a neighbor put the sign there. Did you actually see them put it there? If not, it could have been anyone. And how do you know your neighbors see how much your DH is working on the property. Are they sitting outside watching him?

One of the homes in my neighborhood has a 6' pile of mulch in one of its driveways (they have two driveways on either side of the home.) The mulch pile has been there for over a year and yeah it bothers all of us (the neighbors). I'm sure there have been those that called the town and complained (we've got neighbors who drive around and call and complain about everything...we've had two visits from the town after complaints, but they were apologetic), but most of us know there's nothing we can do about it.

Granted, I know this isn't the same thing as the OP because they are clearly making an effort in their home's appearance, which isn't the case with the home in our neighborhood. But both my DH and I would find it a bit discourteous. My DH travels a lot and works long hours, but we would find a way to relocate the mulch so it wasn't curbside. It would be a priority for us before the planting beds were actually completed.

ETA: if it was one of our surrounding neighbors or someone we knew, my DH would likely ask them if they needed a hand and offer his help. There's no way in heck we would leave a sign on any neighbor's property. We tend to mind our own business and if we saw an effort being made in the home, we'd be more understanding.

What bothers DH is what if someone helped himself/herself to it? We just moved in and our entire back and front yard needs landscaping. He is sunburnt and sore every Sunday from hard work putting flower beds in place. I know the neighbors see this.

Granted, it is taking a long time, to think it is "funny" to give someone else's things away for free is something I cannot rationalize.

To be honest, this is what you should've done from the start. It shouldn't be in the street. If you left a chair or something on the curb wouldn't you expect someone to come and take it away? I would. Curbside = up for grabs. Maybe they actually thought they were doing you a FAVOR by helping you get rid of it faster. Like someone else said, people can't read your mind.

I find the sign very rude! What ever happened to just talking to your neighbors first! Before they put a sign up, they could have came to you first. Obviously this is probably your first time dealing with this situation, and I feel your neighbors could have asked you to remove it first, or talked to you about what's going on etc. I'm all about giving people the benefit of the doubt. Clearly you were not aware it was bothering anyone, and you weren't doing it on purpose, so I say "rude neighbors"! I would be mad! But I would also remove the mulch knowing now that it bothers people.

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

I think it's rude on both parts - a month is WAY too long to have a huge pile of mulch sitting on the curb ......

However, as a NEIGHBOR, I'd never do that to another person. I'd probably offer to help your DH on Sunday to get it done, or talk to you abotu getting it done b/c it's been there forever - but I'd never take it upon myself to put out a sign ..........that is obnoxiouis.

I think your neighbor is justified. I'd be pretty damn pissed if someone left mulch outside of their house for a month! I think the sign is hilarious...granted it's ballsy and I wouldn't have done it. I'm more the type to say when are you moving this f@cking mulch from the street?!

Re: Rude neighbor or justified?

the sign is rude - but so is leaving mulch in the street for over a month. Move the mulch to your driveway then at least no one can say anything! BTW, it could have been anyone who left the sign - someone who walks by all the time, a garbageman etc.

Oh yeah, we had it delivered once and put on our driveway -- at the very top, in the corner of the driveway, by our garage and garage door. It took about a week for DH to get it done (sadly because he had a few days of major rain)... and then that was that. I don't think our town even allows it in the street. I would think we'd get fined and/or peeve some neighbors big-time.

Your neighbor's actions were a bit passive aggressive BUT I think it is inconsiderate that you have left this pile of mulch in the street for an extended period of time. In my town this would be an issue since the street is actually public property.

Agreed.

Rude neighbor or justified?

Because it wasn't his mulch- he was a jerk.

I would've had my husband move the pile to my driveway if it was going to be there that long. I don't think it's RUDE of you guys, though. Things like that don't bother me. My yard is atrocious this year due to one neighbor cutting down the tree that gave my grass shade and having sewers connected.. My neighbors must hate me, lol
