Would I be a really nasty neighbor?
So, earlier in the year (about May), my block sent out signatures for a block party. At that time, they said it was going to be on July 13. Great - I would participate. The last week in June we got something in our email that stated that the block party date was up to us: either Sept. 14 or Sept. 21. and to send an email by June 30 to let them know which date. Well, the 14th is yom kippur and I am jewish, so obviously will not be participating. I was also planning on having people over to my house to break the fast (obviously not to have a party though) at the end of the day. I sent a nice email notifying them that, incase they didn't know, it was yom kippur and obviously I couldn't do that date. My friend, who volunteered to help plan, was just notified that it was the 14th of Sept and told to get signatures. I am thinking of refusing to sign, because they do need to obtain signatures of everyone on the block to have it (whether they are for or against). I don't mean to be rude, but if I tried to plan a block party on Easter Sunday, I am sure everyone would be up in arms. They could have chosen the 6th or the 21st in September, rather than a jewish holiday (or have gotten their shit together for the actual summer time) In all honestly, while I enjoy hosting a party, my block is very big and most of the stuff isn't even near my house (and you can't even see it from my house due to 2 bends in the road) so if I wanted my child to participate in the things that I pay 100 dollars for, I would have to leave people at my house to supervise him! But, I would have done that (and did do it last year).

Not nasty at all. That is a very high holiday and if they don't understand that, F them. I wouldn't sign it.

Re: Would I be a really nasty neighbor?
I don't understand... they are giving you a choice of two days Sept. 14 or Sept. 21 and you're mad because one of those days is a Jewish holiday? Can't you just pick the other day? I'm not understanding.
ETA: Wait, I guess they picked the day anyway. I don't know... It's pretty impossible to plan an event for a large group like that and not interfere in any holidays, birthdays, events, etc. It's just the way it is. I might ask why Sept. 21st was ruled out, but I don't think I wouldn't sign. My understanding is that you are just signing up to get permits that you are not asked to participate and contribute if you don't want to, correct?

They gave the entire block a choice between 2 days. The one that was picked more was Sept 14. My contention is that it should haven't even been an option - so now that is the option that was chosen!

But if I don't sign, they can't get the permits. Hence, why I don't want to sign. That's why I am thinking it would be nasty. And I think a major holiday is different from a birthday, etc. If it was on the 6th, I wouldn't be able to participate either, because it is my sons birthday party, BUT I would have signed and just not contributed!

Eh, if it bothers you that much, don't sign, but that's pretty nasty IMO. All the other kids would be SOL because you celebrate a holiday that day? Doesn't seem like a very religious thing to do.

Re: Would I be a really nasty neighbor?
I think you're being rude.
If you're block is as big as you say it is I would think it would be hard to accomodate everyone. Maybe the 14th was a better day for the majority of people on your block?
You aren't forced to participate. They only need the signature to obtain the permits to close the street. Why would you not sign it because you can't participate on that day?

It would inconvenience, because they would have to park around the block and nowhere near my house. There are about 50 houses on the block and to find a parking spot during the block party is very hard!

So either way parking would be an inconvenience.

Parking isn't my problem so much. Planning a block party on a major holiday is. But maybe I am wrong and just making a rash decision!

Would I be a really nasty neighbor?
While I do see your point if it were me I would sign.
First, I would assume they went with majority when picking the day, second, I would hate to be the person who stopped the block party from going on, I can't imagine that would endear my neighbors to me and life is long, I don't need all my neighbors hating me. Honestly it just seems mean to not sign to me, so while I get that it is your holiday I would sign.

Re: Would I be a really nasty neighbor?
Yom Kippur is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. There is no way that I would sign for a block party that day. First of all, your kids wouldn't be able to participate, and how are they going to feel about that. Second, there won't be any parking for your guests for the break fast, and who wants to walk from far away after you haven't eaten or drank anything for 25 hours! Also, I don't know if you attend synagogue, and if so, if you drive or not, but it would be a huge inconvenience for me to not be able to get on and off my street that day.
I'm usually a pretty accommodating person, but I think it's really rude to plan the block party that day. Are you the only Jewish family on your block?
ETA: We are fairly observant of Yom Kippur, and do not listen to music, watch TV, etc. It would impact the sanctity of the day for me to hear loud music outside, etc., which is another reason that I would not sign. I feel for you. I would be PISSED if it were me.

If most of my neighbors were jewish and held it on Easter Sunday I wouldn't care. I would be the minority. I wouldn't hold that against them and I would sign to allow the block party. I would just celebrate at someone else's house that year.

This is how I feel, just written much more eloquently than I did. However, I do see other peoples points of view! While I drive to temple, this is one of the holidays that I take pretty seriously! And honestly, I don't know how I would even begin to explain to my 4 year old son (who LOVES block parties) why we can't participate and everyone else can. I can see some major tantrumming going on that day! There are a few more jewish people on the block but I am not sure how observant they are.

My parents never participate in their block party - it's not their thing. - But they would never ruin it for the rest of the block by not signing.
I see what you're saying re: the holiday, and I think it was in poor taste on their part - but I still wouldn't refuse to sign, I just wouldn't participate.

I think it's incredibly rude for your neighbors to plan the block party on a religous holiday like that. Yes, you can sign and not participate, but if you wanted to attend the block party, now you can't. I would be upset, but in the long run I would still sign to allow them to get the permit.

This. Isn't a block party supposed to be as inclusive/welcoming as possible? Conflicting with one family's prior engagement is one thing, but to rule out a whole religion from attending? That's kind of gross.
Way to make minorities feel welcome. It would be like choosing Easter Sunday--total disrespect.

I don't think they should have chosen that day - its just inconsiderate. But i would probably sign anyway, just not participate in the party. I would mention something, like in the future can you please try to avoid having it on a holiday where some can't partipicate!!!
